department Association activities, The Newsletter for

Jun‟2014 to May‟2015 is being introduced. This

Newsletter contains various activities carried out by the

students and Faculty of the EEE department.

26.07.2014 - “Inauguration of electrical and

electronics engineering department association

function”

The inaugural function of Electrical and

Electronics Engineering department association RIT

ELECTRA was held on 26.07.2014 at ECE Seminal Hall

for the academic year 2014-2015. The program started

with a prayer. Dr. S. Kannan, Prof. and Head welcomed

the gathering. Dr. R. V. Mahendra Gowda, Principal,

delivered the Presidential address. He explained about

the importance of a Technical Association and gave

guidelines to students. He also motivated the students to

make good use of Association activities. He advised the

students to design an affordable Electric car. Er. B.

Velvendan, General Manager, Electrical, Textile

Division, Ramco Group was the chief guest and gave a

special lecture about Renewable energy sources that are

developing in the market. It was very useful to the

students. Mr. D. Karthik Prabhu, Asst. Prof., presented

the Association Plan for the academic year 2014-15. The

Association Logo was designed by Ms.M.Belsibai and

M.Ambika, students of II year EEE. The efforts of those

students were recognised and they were duly honoured.

Lastly the vote of thanks was given by Mr.Aashik Ali, II

year EEE, Student Secretary of the association.

19.07.2014 - Visit to Power House of RIT

RIT-ELECTRA arranged a visit to the

powerhouse inside the campus on 19.07.2014 between

3.30 and 5.00 PM for the II year students of EEE.

Er. M. Rengasubramanian, Senior Electrical Engineer,

RIT Power house explained the various equipment such

as Power transformer, Potential transformer (PT),

Current Transformer (CT), Lightning arrestor, 11 kV HV

Underground Cable, Distribution system, UPS along

with battery backup etc. The students showed keen

interest in learning and clarified their doubts. He also

explained the input and output ratings of various

electrical equipment installed in the RIT powerhouse.

09.08.14 - Guest Lecture on “Electrical Safety and

Energy Management in Lighting Systems”

A Guest Lecture on “Electrical safety and

Energy Management in Lighting Systems was held on

09.08.14 for 68 students of II year EEE from 1.30 PM to

05.00 PM. Dr. V. Saravanan, Asso. Prof., EEE,

Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, delivered

the lecture. The importance of Electrical safety was

explained with case studies in the first session. In the

next session, he discussed about the recent trends in

lighting systems and energy management in lighting

system. The students were motivated to interact with the

guest. A Quiz was conducted based on the lecture,

Ms.S.Abirami and Ms.S.A.Devi Durga, II year EEE won

the first prize in it.

16.08.2014 One day‟ Industrial Visit to Ramco Cements

Pvt Ltd., R.R. Nagar, Virudhunagar

RIT-ELECTRA arranged a one day industrial

visit to Ramco Cements Pvt Ltd, from 10.30 AM to

5.00 PM for the II year students of EEE. The students

got an idea about the production of cement and visited

the sub-station present inside the factory. The electrical

engineers explained the voltage and current levels of

incoming and outgoing power lines and basic

functioning of the various equipments such as

transformers, circuit breakers, metering instruments,

and distribution system. The visit gave an overall view

of the functioning of various electrical machines

installed inside the premises and the students clarified

their doubts with the engineers present.

24.08.2014 & 07.09.2014 Two day‟ Workshop on “PCB

DESIGN”

A Workshop on “PCB Design” was conducted

by PG (M.Tech PED) students of Kalasalingam

University, Krishnankoil to 69 students of II year EEE on

24.08.2014 and 07.09.2014. The morning session dealt

with the theory about PCB and softwares used for PCB

designing. In the afternoon session, hands on training

was given on designing of PCB‟s. Students did PCB

design using simulation. On 07.09.2014, students

implemented small electronic circuits using PCB

hardware.

09.12.2014 to 13.12.2014 Five days‟ Value Added

Course on “Arduino”

A value added course on “Arduino” was

conducted from 09.12.2014 to 13.12.2014. Dr.S.Kannan,

Prof., EEE addressed the students on the „importance of

innovation‟ during the inaugural function.

Mr.G.Jaisarathy and Mr.S.Karthikeyan, Embedded

project developers from M/S. ONEYES

TECHNOLOGIES, Chennai gave hands on training

using Arduino. 64 students of II year EEE attended and

benefited from this course. The five day training

programme gave an idea about the functioning of

electronics components and dealt with the embedded C

programming using Arduino as a controller with the

applications of LED blinking, control of robots using

Bluetooth module, 7 segment LCD display, thermistor,

Buzzer and other simple application. The training was

very helpful to the students. They learnt all the industrial

applications for monitoring and controlling the

equipment using Arduino as a controller.

The training programme was successfully

completed with positive feedbacks from students. At the

end certificates were distributed to students. In their

feedback, students said the training will be helpful to do

mini projects. The Principal Dr.R.V.Mahendra Gowda

informed the students to prepare mini-projects to be

displayed in the National Science day function to be held

on 28.02.2015. He also distributed Certificates to the

10.01.2015 - Half a day‟ Industrial Visit to “Sri Vishnu

Shankar Mills”, Rajapalayam

RIT-ELECTRA arranged a half a day industrial

visit to Sri Vishnu Shankar Mills, Rajapalayam between

2.30 PM and 5.00 PM for the I year students of EEE. The

students were accompanied by two faculty members,

namely, Mr.D. Karthik Prabhu, AP/EEE & Mrs.H.

Narthana, AP/EEE. One of the supervisor explained the

fire safety methods in the industry for creating awareness

among the students. The chief electrical engineer took the

students into the mill and explained the different sections

of the mill starting from the power house, transformer, bus

bars, circuit breakers like oil circuit breaker, air circuit

breaker and generators. He also explained the fuel used

for the generators. Finally, one of the supervisors took the

students to the section where the thread is made from the

cotton. The information given to the students was

informative and their doubts were clarified. Finally, the

visit came to an end at 5.00 PM.

06.02.2015 to 07.02.2015 - Two day‟ Industrial Visit to

“GD Electrical equipments”, Coimabatore

RIT-ELECTRA arranged a two day industrial

visit to “GD Electrical equipments”, Coimabatore for

the II year students of EEE. Two faculty members from

EEE dept, Mr.K Karthikeyan, AP/EEE and Mrs.H.

Narthana, AP/EEE accompanied the students during the

visit. Mr.G.D. Gopal Raja of GD Electrical equipments

explained the manufacturing of a.c. and d.c. motors. The

various sections in which the machines were

manufactured were explained practically. The students got

an idea about the windings, stampings, stator, rotor,

commutator and brushes present inside the motor. The

components inside the motor were shown clearly for

demonstration to the students. The students benefited from

the visit by clarifying their doubts regarding machines.

Lastly the industrial visit successfully ended with a visit to

GD Naidu Museum, Coimbatore where the students learnt

about inventions made by the scientist, Mr.G.D. Naidu.

16.02.2015 - Half a day workshop on “PLC Course”

A Half a day workshop on “PLC Course”

was conducted on 16.02.2015 for 68 students of EEE

from 2.15 pm to 5.00 pm. Mr. G.Raghuramraja, Lead

Engineer, from Stonehat Technologies, Coimbatore

delivered a lecture on PLC basics, Architecture, system,

input, programming, basic ON/OFF control using switch

or sensor, concepts of timer and counter, PLC output,

Data flow and scan process to the students with the help

of PLC Trainer kit. The students were informed about the

availability of many example programs, instructions and

experiments in the website for their reference and use.

The concepts of PLC were explained with different case

studies while executing the programs. The students

benefited out of the course as it provided useful ideas for

doing mini-projects.

28.02.2015 – One day “National Science Day

Celebration”

Ramco Institute of Technology organized the

one day National Science Day celebration for all the

students of RIT on 28.02.2015. The program started with

a prayer. Dr.S.Rajakarunakaran, Prof. & Head,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, RIT welcomed

the gathering, Dr. R.V. Mahendra Gowda, Principal,

delivered the presidential address. The inaugural function

started with the release of the book of abstracts by Shri. P.

Chandrasekar Raja, MD, Rajalakshimi Accessories Pvt.

Ltd. As part of the celebration, events like Paper

presentations in the domain of Science and Technology

and Mathematics, aptitude test in C programming,

Mathematical Rangoli, Model Making and Drawing,

Mathematical Aptitude, Collage and Project Exhibition

were conducted.

06.03.2015 to 07.03.2015 - Two day National Conference

on “Innovations in Engineering, Science and

Technology (NCIEST-2015)”

A two day National Conference on “Innovations

in Engineering, Science and Technology (NCIEST-

2015)” was held on 06.03.2015 and 07.03.2015. The

programme was organized by Dr.R.V. Mahendra Gowda,

Principal, RIT, Faculty Co-ordinators,

Dr.S.Rajakarunakaran, HoD/Mech and

Dr.S.Periyanayagi, HoD Incharge/ECE. Dr.S.Kannan,

Prof & Head/EEE, Mr.K.Karthikeyan, AP/EEE,

Mr.D.Karthik Prabhu, AP/EEE and Mr.P.RamPrakash,

AP/EEE presented papers. A paper titled “Energy based

Reliability index – A Tutorial was presented by

Mr.K.Karthikeyan, AP/EEE & Dr.S.Kannan, Prof &

Head/EEE. Mr.P.RamPrakash, AP/EEE presented a paper

titled “Modified PWM Technique for Harmonic

Elimination in Modified Cascaded Inverter”.

Mr.P.RamPrakash, AP/EEE & Mr.D.Karthik Prabhu,

AP/EEE presented a paper titled “Performance

Evaluation of Nine-Level modified cascaded Inverter

with different PWM techniques”. The top 10 students

of I year and II year EEE participated in the conference.

04.04.2015 - Two Hour‟ Local Visit to “Mudangiyar

Sub-Station (110/11kV)”, Rajapalayam.

The EEE Department arranged a local visit to

Mudangiyar Sub-Station (110/11kV) on 04.04.15 from

11.00 AM to 1.00 PM for 62 students of II year EEE. The

Assistant Engineer in the substation explained about the

overall layout and how power is distributed among

various places. The layout gave the idea about the control

unit, lightening arrestor switch, group control breaker and

low voltage breakers. The students were taken to the

battery room consisting of 55 cells of a dc battery for

back-up which is a combination of acid and distilled

water. The purpose of battery back-up was explained

clearly to the students. The control panel for all the

feeders with the metres, type of relays and circuit breakers

was shown. Finally, the students were explained about the

distribution stage i.e. from 110 kV to 11 kV, type of

insulators, isolator switches, step-down transformer,

instrument transformers like CTs and PTs and feeders

taken out for distribution. The students understood the

concepts of substation and also clarified their doubts.

04.04.2015 – A RIT-ELECTRA Valedictory Function

The Valedictory function of RIT ELECTRA was

held on 04.04.2015 at ECE Seminal Hall organized by the

department of EEE. The function started with a prayer. 69

students of II year EEE and 55 students of I year EEE

participated in the function. Dr.S.Kannan, Prof., &

Head/EEE, delivered the welcome address, Dr. R. V.

Mahendra Gowda, Principal, delivered the presidential

address and honoured the chief guest. The introduction to

the chief guest was given by Ms.S. Amirtha Priya, of II

year EEE. The annual report for the academic year 2014-

2015 was delivered by Mr.D.karthik Prabhu, AP/EEE,

faculty incharge for RIT ELECTRA association. The

annual report included various programmes (Guest

lectures, value added courses) conducted, industrial visits

and in-plant training organized for the students.

Er.G.V.Palanivel, Executive Engineer,

TANGEDCO, Kottaipatti, Srivilliputhur was the chief

guest and gave a special lecture on crisis of power

generation in Tamil Nadu and the requirement of land for

the construction of towers. The students were advised on

how to trouble shoot the problems happening in the field

of electricity using wireless technology. The function was

interactive and informative with the few puzzles and

riddles. Certificates and prizes were distributed by the

chief guest to the winners of National Science Day

Project Exhibition held on 28.02.2015. V. Sri Janani

20.05.2015 to 31.05.2015 Twelve days‟ Value Added

Course on “Raspberry Pi”

RIT-ELECTRA conducted a 12 day value added

course, Certification programme on “Raspberry Pi” from

20.05.2015 to 31.05.2015 for 61 students of II year EEE.

Dr.S.Kannan, Prof., & Head/ EEE, delivered the welcome

address during the inaugural function. The trainers

Mr.S.Satheesh, Mr.S.Pradeep & Mr.M.Narendra Babu,

from M/S. BETA TECHNOLOGIES INDIA PVT LTD,

Coimbatore gave hands on training using Raspberry Pi.

The first day went on with the introduction about the

basics of embedded system, history and various types of

architecture in microprocessor and peripheral interface

controllers. They discussed about the version and

applications of Raspberry pi, power supply diagram,

bridge rectifier, transformers, python programming

concepts and installation of library files using software.

The programming concepts like modes of operation,

simple programs using conditional and looping statements

were explained in detail.

The students also got an idea about hardware

component of Raspberry pi, pin diagram of BROADCOM

2835 ARM II, new animations, games using python shell,

switch and relay circuits, different types of sensors such as

fire sensor, gas sensor, PIR, IR sensor, Humidity and

vibrating sensor etc. The last day of the session dealt with

the interfacing of external hardware with the software,

wireless protocols such as zigbee, Bluetooth and wi-fi.

The entire course molded the students to do their mini

projects by using raspberry pi in real time applications.

The training programme was successfully

completed with positive feedbacks from students. At the

end certificates were distributed to students. Mr.Aashik
