What is PBIS? PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. PBIS focuses on creating and sustaining
school-wide, classroom, and individual systems of support that improve the educational environment
for all children. Our aim is to explicitly teach behavioral expectations and then recognize the positive
behaviors shown by students.
By implementing PBIS, we hope to reduce school and classroom behavior disruptions and educate all
students about acceptable school behaviors. Our PBIS implementation plan includes clearly defined
outcomes, research-validated practices, supportive administrative systems, and information for
problem solving behaviors.
All staff members at Ramsey Middle School will establish regular, predictable, positive learning and
teaching environments. The staff members will serve as positive role models to students as they teach
expected school behaviors. Our school also has a system in place for recognizing and rewarding
expected behaviors. By improving the school environment, we hope to increase learning time and
promote academic and social success for every student.
Parental Involvement
In order for PBIS to be successful at Ramsey, we need your help. Below is a list of suggestions of how
you can help support PBIS:
● Remind your child of the Ramsey Expectations on a daily basis: Be Reflective,
Open-Minded, Caring and Knowledgeable
● Use the same language that is being used at school with your child. Develop a behavior
matrix at home using the Ramsey Expectations. List all the routines in your home and then
write the behaviors you want to see in that setting.
● Ask your student if they received any ROCKS tickets each week and how they earned them.
Reinforce the positive behaviors that they are showing at school.
● If you are contacted because your child has not followed the Ramsey Expectations, please
review the behavior expectations at home.
Schoolwide Behavior Expectations Why do we have School-wide Expectations?
We have four simple, positively stated expectations that apply to all areas of the school building across
the day. They are Reflective, Open-Minded, Caring and Knowledgeable. Our scholars ROCK! These
four school-wide expectations are also attributes valued by MYP schools and are part of the IB Learner
Profile.
IB Learner Profile
Matrix of Expectations
All students are explicitly taught what it looks like to be reflective, open-minded, caring and
knowledgeable in every area at our school. These behavior expectations are clearly displayed on the
walls around our school.
What do these Expectations Look, Sound and Feel
like? All students learn what is expected of them in each area of the building. Follow the links below to see
the lessons for each of the areas:

Acknowledgement System An integral part of PBIS is to recognize positive behavior show by our students. Students will be
individually recognized when they are caught being Reflective, Open-Minded, Caring or
Knowledgeable. Staff members will acknowledge and compliment students who are exhibiting ROCKS
behavior by giving them specific, positive feedback, along with a ROCKS ticket. Students can enter their
tickets into a weekly drawing for prizes. Weekly drawings are announced on Wednesday mornings. All
students are eligible to receive ROCKS tickets.
ROCKS Tickets
Student of the Month Each month, one student from each grade is chosen to be “Student of the Month.” Students are
nominated by teachers based on academics and behavior. Students who are selected have
demonstrated outstanding performances or have shown growth and improvement in these areas.
Students who are selected will:
● be highlighted on the RAMS show
● have their picture displayed in the cabinet near the front office
● be announced to the school during morning announcements
● receive a Student of the Month pen
Discipline Procedures Ramsey Middle School will use a consistent procedure for handling discipline. Teachers will address all
minor infractions in the classroom. Teachers will refer all major infractions to the Behavior Intervention
Specialists by completing an Office Discipline Referral Form. Intervention Specialists will work with a
student who has a referral to resolve issues and get the student back to class as soon as possible. If a
student receives a referral, parents will be notified by the teacher and/or the Intervention Specialist.
Suspensions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Students committing major offenses will be
permitted to share their version of the incident with an administrator. Other students and/or staff
members involved will also be permitted to report their involvement in or witness of the incident.
After gathering all of the facts the administrator will make the decision to suspend or not to suspend.
In the event of student suspension, the parent will be contacted by administration (by phone if the
contact numbers are current and by suspension note).
