Welcome

What do you think of this bigger and colourful Jubilee special edition? We hope you like it and if so will continue to produce it this way. It’s almost time for the celebrations and I expect lots of you have plans. See across on pages 2 and 4 for details of local events. One other important anniversary celebrated this April was the first full year of operation for the Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust. It’s been an excellent start. The Olympics are on the way and here in Ramsey we have the Carnival, the 1940’s weekend and Party on the Field as well as numerous other summer fixtures, some of which have an Olympic flavour. This issue contains a staggering 6 pages of dates for your diary! We also bring you news on the large TV screen that is now in the front window of the library to provide information (see below) plus crime prevention advice (page 6)and we also have the latest news on the £1 million pounds – have you been approached for your input yet? Consultation activities are taking place across the parish to reach as many as possible. Organisers welcome calls and emails to set up new ones and to reach specific groups of people, so please get in touch if you would like to know more (see pages 9 – 11 for full details)

By Popular Demand!

Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust continues to work to work with the community to meet the targets set as part of the Ramsey Neighbourhood Agreement. Communication between organisations and the public was an important issue that the people of Ramsey felt needed addressing. Ramsey Library has recently taken delivery of a large TV screen, located prominently in the front window of the building, which will display local events and information. All

community groups can advertise events on it by submitting an A4 sized poster (PDF format if emailed). For further details contact Cathryn.rutangye @cambridgeshire.gov.uk Another form of communication available to the public is a paper diary held by the library. The diary can be used to look up when and where events are to be held. It is also a facility to help organisations during their planning stages as it will alert them to any clashing events. If used to their full potential these communication tools will enable the people of Ramsey to have greater access to the wide variety of local activities and events which go on throughout year.

To Celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee we will light the beacon, on Stocking Fen Road. The beacon was originally installed as a project by the Ramsey Initiative (formerly Ramsey Town Centre Partnership), as part of a nationwide scheme to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar. Over 1,000 beacons were lit on 21st October 2005; the Queen lit the first one at Portsmouth at the side of HMS Victory. We have lit the beacon nearly every year since. The beacon was lit in 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Ramsey Initiative. The Initiative’s aims are focused around improving the heart of the Town Centre to make it a better place to shop and work and to encourage tourism in the town. We achieve this through many different projects including The

Trading Tree – a micro market in our premises encouraging small, start-up and local traders to test the market, Job Search – an award winning service linking local job seekers with work opportunities and training; and supporting businesses with staff recruitment, Annual Continental Market/s and the provision of regular information bulletins and support to the business community along with the production of a range of literature including The Ramsey Guide and Heritage Trial. The latest beacon lighting will be an evening of fun and will take place in and around the Community Centre, in Stocking Fen Road, and will start off with a ‘Free Children’s Disco’ from 6.00 pm and finish with a Firework display and ‘Lighting of the Beacon’ at about 10.00pm. Other attractions will be a hog roast and

fun fair in the car park, plus a children’s entertainer in the Community Centre. Monday 4th June An Evening of Fun & Lighting of the Beacon in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee For Further information of the Beacon Lighting or the work of The Ramsey Initiative please phone 01487 813612.

We wanted to remind you that this year’s Ramsey 1940s show will be the second at our new site but the tenth since its inception at the Rural Museum in 2003. The site which was originally the area headquarters for a searchlight and anti aircraft battery during the Second World War consists of The Camp area as well as 20 plus acres of grassland. The weekend is organised and arranged by a small volunteer committee whose aim is for the 1940s weekend to continue to raise money for local charities and good causes as well as bringing history to life. The show will have the Camp area providing the backdrop for all things Forties. Re-enactor Living History and Period vehicle displays will be situated around the wooden buildings. The Cinema will be open for film shows and those all important news reels. For something new this year we have a Big Top Circus Tent which will be situated in the field area. This will be where talks about the era, dance exhibitions and demonstrations as well as the popular fashions shows and afternoon dances will take place during the daytime. Our two entertainment evenings will also be held in

The Big Top. Friday evening we are hosting a Blitz Night dance and social with music and atmosphere of the 40s era where we hope to give people a chance to sample some community spirit. This is our home front night for civilians working in factories and on the land and those in the services who would have been home on leave. Remember to bring your torch and gas masks! On Saturday evening we welcome back the Sticky Wicket Swing Band to provide the music for our Big Band Evening. Its always a brilliant evening with people who dress to impress whether in 1940s glamour, civilian utility clothing, home front or allied uniforms. 1940s period dress is encouraged but not essential. We want everyone to have enjoy themselves and have a jolly good time. You do have to be over 12 years to attend our dances. We would advise anyone wishing to come to our dances to buy their tickets well in advance. The main event field contains a shopping experience with many stalls for not only the vintage enthusiast but general browser too. There will be a fairground, flight simulator as well as other classic vehicle displays. The event field will be where the period football

match between the Goldthorpe Dribblers and the Ammo Girls takes place. Football rattles at the ready! You can sit and listen to the bands there too. We are holding a 1940s dog show for the first time this year on Sunday afternoon. All vending and catering stalls are situated around the field area so spam sandwiches can be the order of the day. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has been requested but as yet not confirmed. On Sunday the Drum Head Service at 12 noon commemorates all those who lost their lives in world conflicts. We will also have a moving sunset ceremony to close the event on Sunday afternoon. A free vintage omnibus will ferry people to and from Ramsey to The Camp in Wood Lane over the weekend so that both the town and the Camp are easily accessible. We are always looking for volunteers and stewards to help during the weekend. If you can spare a few hours we would gratefully accept any help you can give. Please contact us as soon as possible. Old library to reopen as community meeting space

The old Ramsey Library is to open to the public once again. The building on School Lane has been unoccupied since the new library opened. Ramsey Town Council and Cambs County Council have worked together to reopen the building as a local com-munity venue, available to hire from Monday 14th May. It now can hold a 60 per-son capacity. So if you're looking for a large community meeting place for children’s events, local groups or clubs please contact Ramsey Town Council on 01487 814957.

Crime Prevention Information

Sergeant Dave Savill of the St Ives and

Ramsey Neighbourhood Problem Solving Team, has issued these helpful guidelines to help

people protect their homes against burglaries.

Always close and lock the external doors and windows –to prevent ‘walk’ in burglaries. Do not to leave keys, including spares, near the front door or where they could be reached from the outside. Also, do not leave keys in the garage or in a memorable place, such as under a flowerpot or the doormat. Use timers to switch on lights and radios, even televisions, when you are away from home. If you’re away for any length of time, have a friend, relative or neighbour come in to your property to close and open curtains, collect the post or to make the property appear occupied. When you know you are going away, do not announce the fact in a public place, such as the pub or a newsagent. Do not advertise the fact that you are soon to be going away on social networking sites, and encourage children not to do this either. If you see suspicious people or vehicles

that do not appear to be from the area, please call us. If you do see people or vehicles that are unfamiliar to you, try to note something down about them: PEOPLE - age, height, skin colour, weight, hair colour/style, clothing description, facial hair etc. VEHICLES - make, model, colour, registration number, shape, size etc.

Contacting the Police As part of ‘Operation Twist’ (the crackdown on rural burglaries in this area)

people can now report suspicious activity online or via email at:

www.cambs.police.uk. [email protected]

ce.uk

It is also important for people to remember that they can report all non-emergency

incidents by phoning 101. The change has been introduced so people have one, easy-to-remember way to contact local police, wherever they are. If you wish to report a crime anonymously you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

People should continue to call 999 when an immediate response is needed, for example if a crime is happening, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, or someone is in danger.

Ready, Get Set, Go! - for Ramsey Carnival 2012

Ramsey is getting set for this summer with its Olympic themed carnival. This year Ramsey Carnival is taking place on Saturday 14th July 2012. The parade will set off from the Rainbow Surgery car park at 1:30pm following a route along the Great Whyte, down the High Street then onto Hollow Lane and finally reaching the Abbey College, via Abbey Road, for the Official Opening at 2pm.

The Carnival, which takes place every other year, is a fundraiser for charities in the town and has a wide selection of stalls and activities for everyone. This year there will be entertainment by the local children and organisations, quad bikes, stalls and games and refreshments including a hog roast, teas, ice-cream and hot-dogs. The organising committee would welcome any support and help and there is still the opportunity for community groups to enter a float in the procession. For further details, to volunteer or to register a float in the parade please contact

Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust - One Year On Tuesday 3rd April 2012 was a day of great celebration for the Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust as it reached its 1st birthday. The celebrations began at 4pm with an Open Day which, despite the terrible weather, was well attended. The event attracted a wide cross section of the community who had the opportunity to look at displays showing what the trust had achieved in its 1st year along with its plans for the future. Central to the event was an enormous 3D map of the area surrounding King George’s Field on which people were encouraged to place flags showing their concerns and hopes for the area. This ongoing project aims to enhance the area to meet the needs of the people who live there as well as those who use the field for recreational purposes.

Another success of the event was a game of ‘Biglopoly’ run by Mr. Ben Lee from the National Association of Neighbourhood Management, who came from London especially for the occasion. Biglopoly, based on the familiar game of Monopoly, allows players to imagine they are the people determining how the £1 million from the Big Local Fund is to be spent and invested throughout the 10 years of the programme. This raised much discussion and made people aware how complex the

decisions about the allocation of the £1 million are going to be. It is also hoped that, by playing the game, more people have been encouraged to get involved in the decision making process.

As with all birthday celebrations the event included the cut-ting of a cake by the Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust new chairperson Carol Aston. Carol has lived in Ramsey for over 14 years and is dedicated to the town. She has strong ties to the community and hopes that this will allow her to lead the Trust over the next year. The Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust also welcomed Val Fendley and Mary Ison. Val is the new Community Development Worker and Mary will be coordinating the volunteers who print, collate and distribute the Ramsey Neighbourhood News. The evening was rounded up with the AGM at which Ian Curtis was thanked for his Chairmanship of the Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust. Ian has stepped down as chair, due to other commitments, but will continue as a trustee. Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust continues to work to improve the lives of the people of Ramsey and by working with the community it is hoped that we can make Ramsey Better Together.

Drawing Up a Vision of Ramsey

In early 2012 children from Ramsey Spinning Infants School

designed posters to show their ‘Vision of Ramsey’. The posters

were sent across to the team working on the Ramsey Million

project, who were absolutely delighted to receive them.

Some of the Messenger team judged the posters and had a

really hard time picking out the winning entries because all the

designs included many of the elements that represent our

community. The posters show people of all ages, animals, local

landmarks and features such as the clock-tower along with

churches, our historic streetlights and the duck pond. An unusual

feature brought smiles to the judge’s faces as, in one child’s

vision, there is the addition of another pond to the area - for

sharks! A prize-giving took place on Saturday 26th May and all the

entries were highly commended. Many thanks from the Ramsey

Million project to all the staff and children at Spinning Infants for

taking the time to get involved in this community project.

Elements of the winning entries will be used in Ramsey Million

promotional material this summer and could be seen in the

local area for many years to come. (See ram logo below)

Look out for this flyer as it tells you how to get involved

in the Ramsey Million project. It’s as simple as

writing your idea on the card or, if you want to get more

involved, come along to the meeting at Ramsey Community Centre, 21st June, 6.30pm.

Ramsey Million –

New Face on Board Val Fendley is the new Community Development Worker for Ramsey. To contact Val please call 07955817137 or email [email protected] Partially funded by Big Local, one of her key tasks is developing the community consultation for the ‘Ramsey Million’ project. Over the next few months Val will be spreading the word about the £1 million allocated to Ramsey by the Big Local Lottery fund. With a team of volunteer Messengers she will be gathering people’s views about their vision for Ramsey. Val said, “The community is key to this process. No money will be released until the Lottery is happy that we’ve consulted with local people and ensured that their views are developed into a community plan, which we’ll develop later this year.”

Taking the Message to Ipswich

On the 29th March 2012 the Ramsey Big Local Lottery Messengers went on a fact finding trip to Ipswich to see how they are getting the message out into their community and planning for their own £1 million grant.

Ipswich is further along the Big Local process so it was a very informative trip with lots of discussion and fact sharing. Despite being a very different area than Ramsey many of their ideas were transferable to Ramsey’s situation. It was particularly useful to hear how they are setting up their ‘Partnership’ and see how their training programme is preparing them for the complex decisions that are ahead. Everyone felt that it was very inspiring to see what Ipswich has achieved so far and it energised the Messengers to move forward to the next stage of the Big Local process.

If you have lots of time or just a spare few minutes there are many ways you can get involved in the ‘Ramsey Million’ project. Some are very easy and some require a little more commitment - but all are vital to its success. Here are some of the ways people are getting involved…

Out and About with the Messengers If you live in the parish of Ramsey and you see Val Fendley and the team of Messengers out and about please do not hesitate to let them know about your vision for Ramsey. Your views will determine how the £1 million will be allocated, over the next 10 years, to make Ramsey a better place for everyone to live and work in. Or how about becoming a Messenger? (See below for Val’s contact details)

A Facebook page has also been developed as an interactive tool for the consultation. The project needs to reach out to as many people as possible and social networking is just one of the methods being used. To find

it simply search on Facebook for ‘Ramsey Million – Getting People Involved’ to access the page. For further information you can contact Val Fendley via email at [email protected] or on 07955 817137.

Change of name for Careers Advice Service

From 1 April the County Council Adult Careers Service (Next Step) became part of the new National Careers Service and we are now known as the Adult Careers Service.

We are still delivering careers advice through the County’s larger libraries and if you are aged 19 and above and would like to talk with a qualified careers guidance adviser at Ramsey Library you can book a session by contacting the numbers below. An example of how we work: Paul attended an event in Ramsey Library in February and whilst Paul was looking for jobs on the Internet at the Library it

Job Exchange Notice-board in St Peter’s Church:

St Peter’s Church is in the centre of the village and we would like it to serve everyone in Upwood and the Raveleys in their every-day lives. “This is one of the many things St Peter’s church could offer and therefore we are happy to introduce our new job exchange notice-board” reports the churchwarden. This new initiative of a job exchange information board was launched in May during the Craft Fair held in the Church on 19th May. It is hoped that this new idea will help the local community and, in particular, the young people in these difficult economic times. St Peter’s Church is open daily during the day-time and a very peaceful and private place to view

the adverts. A notice board to display services that people are willing to provide has been up on Saturday 19th May. It can be found inside the Church - near the entrance. The board will be used to advertise casual or Saturday jobs for students or adults. In order to advertise your services or if you have a job to fill, all you need to do is place a card (about the size of a business card) on the board. Typical services

that could be offered are: Tutor, i.e. music, language etc, babysitting, dog walking, gardening, cleaning or any other skill or expertise. “You don’t need to live in Upwood to advertise and if you know anyone who may benefit from the notice-board please pass on this information” she added. This is by no means a way of finding a full time job but rather a way of helping people to get by or to start in self employment. Please come in to St Peter’s Church and view the job exchange board if you are in need of help or assistance. A quick look at the board may remind you of some jobs that you need doing and you would be supporting the local community by using the services advertised.

Hi Readers,

I just wanted to update you on my marathon news. I managed to finish in a very slow and somewhat painful 6hrs 45 mins, but the day was absolutely amazing, the atmosphere and the crowds were brilliant. Crossing the line and getting my medal was fantastic and all the aches and pains were worth it.

I am very pleased to say that my total fundraising reached £3006.51, but may be a bit more to come so will let you know. The support from the people of Ramsey has been wonderful, £266 raised with bag packing and £126 with the cake stall so a Big

Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Crossroads Carers Service The Carers Service Prescription is available to any carer via their GP Surgery. Nearly all GP Surgeries are now on board. The GP Prescription offers a carer a break which is being used as a prevention before crisis amongst other things. Some other situations that a GP break has helped with are, a carer having a minor operation, being able to attend appointments, social

functions and just getting a break to have some to time to themselves to do what they want to do – Some carers just want to get a full night’s sleep and some just want to have a day out with friends or family. It is easy to access a GP Prescription from your GP – The GP needs to sign the prescription and fax it through to our office and we deal with the rest – We will contact the carer to arrange to go

out to do a home visit and discuss what is required. Once this has been done, the break can go ahead. All carers who access this service are then sign-posted onto other services within the local community and are provided with further information about what is available to them - We also make follow up calls after 7-10 days and 12 weeks to see if they require any further information from us.

Solving a door problem at the Rainbow Surgery!

In the last Ramsey Neighbourhood Newsletter we reported that one of our patients group members, Adrian Kempster, is taking part in the Pathfinder March on the 23rd June. This is a 46 mile walk arranged by the RAF at Wyton and must be completed in less than 20 hours!

We are hoping that patients of the Rainbow surgery will sponsor Adrian in his efforts and any money raised will go towards much needed automatic doors at the surgery. The NHS does not own the surgery building and as such they have no responsibilities for the improvements that we are hoping to make.

Anybody wishing to donate please visit the surgery (opening hours 8.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. every weekday. Closed for lunch 12.30 till 1.30 (2.30 p.m. on Tuesdays)) where you will find a collection box on the reception desk.
