SPECIAL

Medical experts from the Schneieder Children’s Medical Center have published a list of recommendations for a safe and healthy summer vacation. There are usually significantly more injuries among children during the summer months than the rest of the year, with dehydration, drowning, and falls all more common. The Schneieder doctors suggest ways to keep kids safe, without keeping them indoors or inactive, which, they noted, creates a risk of unhealthy excess weight.

Dehydration: Common symptoms of dehydration include a dry mouth, infrequent urination, restlessness and crying without tears. Dehydration can also cause headaches, confusion, dizziness and even a loss of consciousness. If dehydration is suspected, the victim should immediately drink water and go to a nearby medical center or emergency room for treatment.

If the victim is not fully conscious, an ambulance should be called.

Sun exposure: During any outing a hat should be worn to prevent heatstroke,

and skin should be protected by clothing or sunscreen. It is advised to avoid exposure to sunlight between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

Bikes and scooters: Children should wear helmets, elbow guards and knee

guards when riding bicycles, scooters or rollerblades. A helmet is the most effective way of preventing head injury. Riding should take place only in designated areas, and never on noisy streets.

Drowning: Children age 5 and under require constant supervision near

water. Children who cannot swim well should wear flotation devices. Pools in private homes frequented by children should have a fence to prevent drowning. Parents are advised to teach their children how to swim beginning at age 5.

Jellyfish: While jellyfish stings cause pain, they are generally not dangerous. In order

Page 5: Ramya raj

5TIKOO SUMMER SPL

to reduce pain, it is advised not to rub the affected area, but rather to rinse the body in sea water, and then use a soothing cream. If the victim feels weak, or if blisters appear over a large area of skin, they should seek medical attention.

Stings: If a child suffers a bee sting, the stinger should be removed from the skin.

It is important not to try to pull the stinger out directly, but rather to gently push it out. If the child develops signs of an allergic reaction, such as shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, or swelling to the face or lips, they should receive immediate medical attention.

Falls: Parents are advised to move sofas, beds and other

furniture away from windows, and to forbid children to play on roofs or balconies without adult supervision. In addition, it is advised that bars be put on upper-story windows in homes frequented by children in order to prevent falls.Summer camp: Many children spend at least half the summer in day camps. Parents are advised to check the food options available, and to ensure that their children will not simply be given a roll and chocolate spread

each day, but rather, that a variety of toppings such as cheese and tehina will be made available. If children remain in camp until the afternoon, parents should check the lunch menu to ensure that they are getting a healthy lunch. Check for allergenic issues.

Drinks: Water fountains and similar devices should be accessible to

children. It is advised to give children their own water bottle as well, which will help them keep track of how much they are drinking. Parents should speak to children about the importance of remaining hydrated, and should advise children in day camps

to drink at least half a liter of water during their time in camp.

Activity: Children should be encouraged to remain active and not to spend the

vacation sitting in front of a television or computer.wwww

once upon a time, there lived a Brahmin with his wife in a village. Both of them were sad, as they had no children. Every day, they prayed to

God in the hope, that one day they would be blessed with a child. Ultimately, the god blessed them with a child. The Brahmin’s wife gave birth to a baby, but the child came to be a snake. Everyone was shocked and advised them to get rid of the snake as soon as possible.

The Brahmin’s wife remained firm and refused to listen to any one. She loved the snake as her son and didn’t care that her infant was a snake. She brought up the snake with love and care. She fed him with the best food she could arrange for. She made a comfort-able bed in a box and made him sleep on it. The snake grew up and his mother loved him all the more. On one occasion, there was a wedding in the neighbor-hood; the Brahmin’s wife began to think of getting her son married. But the question aroused, which girl would marry a snake?

Although, she had a belief that she would definitely get a girl for her son. One day, when the Brahmin re-turned home, he found his wife in tears. He asked her, “What happened? Why are you crying? “She didn’t answer and kept on crying. The Brahmin asked again, “Tell me what hurts you so much?” Finally, she said, “I know you don’t love my son. You are not taking any interest in our son. He is grown up. You don’t even think to get him a bride”. The Brahmin was shocked to hear such words. He replied, “Bride, for our son? Do you think any girl would marry to a snake?”

The Brahmin’s wife didn’t respond, but she kept on crying. On seeing her crying like that, the Brahmin decided to go out in search of a bride for his son. He traveled to many places, but found no girl who was

ready to marry a snake. At last, he arrived in a big city where one of his friends lived. As the Brahmin had not met him for a long time, he decided to meet him.

Both of the friends were happy to see each other after a long time and spent a good time altogether. During the conversation, the friend happened to ask the Brahmin that why he was traveling round the country. The Brahmin said,” I am looking for a bride for my son”. The friend told him not to go any further and promised his daughter’s hand in marriage. The Brahmin was shocked and said, “I think, it would be better if you see my son before deciding this”.

His friend refused saying that he knew him and his family, so it was not necessary to see the boy. He sent his daughter with the Brahmin in order to get married with his son. The Brahmin’s wife was happy to know this and quickly started making preparations for the marriage. When the villagers heard about this, they went to the girl and advised her not to marry the snake. The girl refused to hear to them and insisted that she had to keep her father’s word.

Accordingly, the marriage between the snake and the girl took place. The girl started living with her husband, the snake. She was a devoted wife and looked after the snake like a good wife. The snake slept in his box at night. One night, when the girl was going to sleep, she saw a handsome young man in the room. She was frightened and was about to run for help. The young man stopped her and said, “Don’t fear. Didn’t you recognize me? I am your husband”.

The girl didn’t believe him. The young man proved himself by entering into the snake’s skin and then came out of it once again as the young man. The girl was really happy to find her hus-band in a human form and fell at his feet. From that night onwards, every night the young would come out of the snake’s skin. He used to stay with his wife till daybreak and then would slip back into the snake’s skin.

One night, the Brahmin heard voices from his daughter-in-law’s room. He kept a watch and saw the snake turning into a young man. He rushed into the room, seized the snake’s skin and threw it into the fire. The young man said, “Dear Father, thank you very much. Due to a curse, I had to remain a snake until somebody without asking me, destroy the snake’s body. Today, you have done it. Now, I am now free from the curse.” Thus, the young man never became snake again and lived happily with his wife.

Albert Einstein was born on the 14th of March 1879 and died on the 18th of April 1955.

• Born in Germany to a Jewish family, Einstein made many contributions to the field of theoretical physics.• Even when very young, Einstein showed great ability in both math’s and science. He was naturally curious and had a brilliant analytical mind.• Einstein worked in a patent office evaluating patents for electromagnetic devices not long after he graduated.• He produced perhaps one of the most famous equations ever: E = mc² (energy equals mass multi-plied by the speed of light squared).• He is also well known for his theory of relativ-ity. Special relativity being introduced in his 1905 paper “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies” before Einstein developed the theory of general relativity between the years of 1907 and 1915.• Einstein won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on theoretical physics.• He worked on many other influential theories and projects including: the deflection of light by gravity, the quantum theory of atomic motion in solids, Brownian motion, an explanation for capil-lary action and much more.• Famous Albert Einstein quotes include: “Wheth-er you can observe a thing or not depends on the theory which you use. It is the theory which de-cides what can be observed.”

ALBERT EINSTEINFATHER OF PHYSICS

Albert Einstein is one of the most celebrated scientists in his-tory. His work helped bring a new era of discovery and knowl-edge to the area of physics. However he is not just known for his famous equations on the conservation of matter and energy or his theory of relativity

Are u thinking what to do in this summer? here is the solution come lets do something dofferent.... lets try to learn origami is it sound something hard..... not at all ... it is a craft that we do using paper...here are some orgami that will be easy.. come on lets try this

Origami

1. Start with a strip of paper. Tie a “knot” in the end of your paper.

2. Pull gently to tighten, then flatten.

3. Fold the end of the strip down and tuck it into the knot. You can cut a bit of it off if it’s too long.

4. Now wrap the other end of the strip around and around this pentagon you have formed, creasing gently as you go.

5. Keep wrapping until you get to the end of the strip.Tuck the last bit of the strip into the pouch. You should be left with a cute little pentagon.

6. Now to make this little pentagon into a star, very gently and slowly use your fingernail to press on the centre of each of its edges. The star should puff out.

origami lucky stars 1 and 2

Page 15: Ramya raj

15TIKOO SUMMER SPL

And you should have a lovely little lucky star!It may take some practise to get the star to puff out perfectly, but stick with it... you’ll get it!If you are having a lot of trouble, try different papers, or try wrapping the strip of paper around without creasing it too much. This helps a bit!

1. Start with a square piece of paper, white side up. Fold the paper in half, then open.Cut the paper in half along this crease.

2. With one of the triangles, fold in half, and open.

3. Fold the top corner downwards to meet the bottom edge of the triangle

4. Fold the two bottom corners upwards to meet together in the middle.

5. Fold the bottom corner up to the centre of the model. Then turn the model over.

A TALE OF BEAUTY

Once upon a time there lived an unhappy young girl. Her mother was dead and her fa-ther had married a widow with two daugh-ters. Her stepmother didn’t like her one little bit. All her kind thoughts and lov-ing touches were for her own daughters. Nothing was too good for them - dresses, shoes, delicious food, soft beds, and ev-ery home comfort. But, for the poor un-happy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters’ hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No rest and no comfort. She had to work hard all day. Only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That’s why everybody called her Cinderella.Cinder-ella used to spend long hours all alone talking

to the cat. The cat said, . Miaow. , which really meant, . Cheer up! You have some-thing neither of your stepsisters has and that is beauty.. It was quite true. Cinder-ella, even dressed in old rags, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy and ugly and always would be. One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the house. Ball was to be held at the palace and the stepsisters were get-ting ready to go. Cinderella didn’t even dare ask if she could go too. She knew

very well what the answer would be: . You? You’re staying at home to wash

the dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and very

sleepy.. Cinderella sighed, . Oh dear, I’m

so unhappy!. and the cat murmured . Miaow.. Suddenly something amaz-ing happened. As Cinderella was sit-ting all alone, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared. . Don’t be alarmed, Cinderella,. said the fairy. . I know you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!. . How can I, dressed in rags?. Cinderella re-plied. . The servants will turn me away!. The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand Cinder-ella found herself wearing the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. . Now for your coach,. said the fairy; “A real lady would never go to a ball on foot! Quick! Get me a pumpkin!. . Oh of course,. said Cin-derella, rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat. . You, bring me seven mice, and, remember they must be

alive!. Cinderella soon returned with to marry one of my two daughters! Can’t you see how ugly Cinderella is?. But, to everyone. s amazement, the shoe fit-ted perfectly.. Suddenly the fairy ap-peared and waved her magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella appeared in a splen-

did dress, shining with youth and beauty. Her stepmother and step-sisters gaped at her in amazement,

and the ministers said, “Come with us Cinderella! The

Prince is waiting for you.” So Cinderella mar-ried the Prince and lived hap-pily ever. As for

Born - 15 July 1903Died - 2 October 1975Achievements - K. Kamaraj played a crucial role in the appointment of India’s two Prime Ministers - Lal Bahadur Shastri in the year 1964 and Indira Gandhi in the year 1966. All throughout his reign as chief minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj strived to provide free meals and education to people. This was for the first time in the world that a measure like this was being executed in 1957.

Kumaraswami Kamaraj, who is better remembered as K. Kamaraj, was a powerful Indian politician. He was regarded as the ‘kingmaker’ in Indian politics and was widely respected for his traits of honesty, integrity and simplicity. During the struggle for India’s independence from the British rule, Kamaraj was a close friend of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was later appointed as the first prime minister of the country. Read this biography further to learn more about K. Kamaraj.

Kamaraj was called kingmaker because he played a crucial role in the appointment of India’s two Prime Ministers - Lal Bahadur Shastri in the year 1964 and again Indira Gandhi in the year 1966. Thus, people fondly called him the Gandhi of South India or even the Black Gandhi. In his hometown Tamil Nadu, the denizens still credit him for spreading education facility to the thousands under the poverty line.

All throughout the reign of K. Kamaraj in Tamil Nadu, he strived to provide free meals and education to people. And this was for the first time in the world that a measure like this was being executed by K. Kamaraj in 1957. Due

to his selfless service for the good of the poor and the downtrodden in the society, the Government of India awarded him with the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in the year 1976.

Though K. Kamaraj’s nurtured an interest in politics since childhood, it was at the age of 16 that he joined the Indian National Congress as a full time worker. His task was to invite speakers, make arrangements for meetings and collect funds for the Congress party. In the year 1930, Kamaraj also participated in a rally to Vedaranyam spearheaded by C. Rajagopalachari as a part of the salt Satyagraha. There were many occasions when Kumaraswami Kamaraj was put behind the bars during the struggle for India’s independence.

High fashion for little kids tends to raise a lot of questions. How expensive is too

expensive? Is children’s sense of style innate or learned? And, mostly recently -- are runway shows for kids a step too far?The first Global Kids’ Fashion Week -- but not the first fashion week for kids -- took place over two days last week in mumbai and was sponsored by kids world a luxury children’s clothing and gift site.

Reactions to the event have been

predictably mixed. Eighty-four percent of people who voted in a TODAY Moms poll called the Fashion Week “inappropriate.” One of the Famous designer of india on the other hand, said it was “cute as hell.”The Independent’s Charlotte Philby noted that the global market for

children’s clothes is about a $100 billion dollar industry, so the existence of luxury children’s clothing labels isn’t entirely surprising. But in the Financial Times, argued that while the staging of the india event was

understandable in terms of branding

and municipal economics, it went against the very nature of what

kids’ clothes should be. “Kids’ fashion ... should be flexible in the extreme,” she wrote; whereas catwalks give adults “different options of themselves from which to choose,” “[c]hildren ... need the space to decide who they are” for themselves. [F]rankly, they seemed more interested in the free popcorn than the clothes. One front-rower’s little boy tried to join in on the catwalk, and wouldn’t be dragged off. And when I heard at

least one celebrity’s toddler having a meltdown, I actually felt warm relief. In a debate on last year,a blogger argued that we should care about kids’ style: Children’s fashion is about more than aesthetics, and, for parents, it can make a bold statement about what we support, who we support, and what we want for our children. ... When their clothing is simply homogenous, diluted to the point of ubiquity and consumed by as many people as possible, how can they feel like it’s truly something that belongs to them?Wilson argued in particular for smaller, independent labels started by moms, dads, aunts and uncles -- “people with real faces, and real stories that aren’t all that different from your own.” And another fashion show happened in hyderabad lets see about that.... After its debut in 2012, the second edition for India Kids Fashion Week will take place in January next year and the highlight of the event will be participation from

children.

The two-day event, co-organised by Event Capital and Craftworld Events, will start Jan 18 at The Lalit, here, said a statement.

“This is more than just fashion. We have tied up with leading schools like Ryan International to work towards a more holistic development for

the kids participating,” said Pankaj Khanna, senior vice-president of

Event Capital.

The show will witness some of the coolest trends in

kidswear created by leading Indian designers and global

brands.

Manoj Mahla of Craftworld Events said: “The kids

fashion industry is one that is rapidly growing and parents today don’t

hesitate to pick up the latest styles from

the biggest brands for their children. This Fashion Week

targets such parents and kids to help them

understand more about the sort of brands that exist for
