Letter from the Mayor & Commissioner

September 2009

Dear Friends of Randall’s Island Park:

For 27 years, the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF) has been an outstanding

advocate and guardian for Randall’s Island Park, working tirelessly in public-private partnership

with the City of New York to protect, maintain, and develop this wonderful part of our City. In

the years since the foundation’s inception, RISF and the New York City Department of Parks

and Recreation have together reclaimed acres of parkland; opened waterfront access for public

use; constructed beautiful new track & field facilities; developed dozens of playing fields around

the island—and this June, we unveiled a magnificent, 160,000 square-foot tennis center!

Thanks to a lot of hard work and vision, Randall’s Island has clearly become what the

partnership set out to create: a comprehensive, world-class destination for sports and recreation.

It is officially the place where New Yorkers go to play.

Inside this report, you’ll find images of international athletic competitions; star-studded

outdoor concerts; gorgeously restored natural areas; and New Yorkers of all ages enjoying green,

open fields right in the heart of our City. When you see the photographs, we hope you’ll agree

just how successful this partnership has been. We also hope that it will inspire you to continue

taking advantage of all the island has to offer, believing as we do that the island’s greatest days

are still to come.

The transformation of Randall’s Island Park promises the great outdoors to generations of

New Yorkers to come—but more than that, it serves as a tribute to all that we can accomplish by

working together. Thank you for your support of Randall’s Island.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Bloomberg Adrian Benepe

As of August 2010

The Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF) works to preserve and realize the Island’s vast poten-tial, and to bring New Yorkers to the Park to play. After two decades of our stewardship, the Islandnow offers state-of-the-art sports fields and recreational facilities with expansive shoreline views –the “great outdoors,” right in the middle of New York City.

Our May 2010 opening of 60 state-of-the-art playing fields marked an especially significant moment, and completion of nearly every capital goal outlined in the original 1999 Management,Restoration and Development Plan for the Park. The fields round out a comprehensive sports andrecreational complex that includes the new 20-court Tennis Center; Icahn Stadium, an IAAF-accredited track & field facility; acres of renovated wetlands; and miles of waterfront pathways.

The photos in this Review best tell the story, as the Island beckons New Yorkers of all ages andabilities to come and play. The fields opening celebration brought new fans to the Park – a trulyextraordinary roster of world class athletes, exemplifying RISF’s mission and embodying our hopesfor this great resource. From the world of tennis, we were honored by Hall of Famer John McEnroe; baseball gave us New York Yankee Mariano Rivera; and soccer offered NY Red BullsKevin Goldthwaite, Carlos Mendes and John Wolyniec. They were joined at the podium by Court-ney Hall, RISF Trustee and Master of Ceremonies and himself a former San Diego Charger andSuper Bowl veteran. Such star power echoes recent accomplishments at Icahn Stadium, whereathletes like Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay and Allison Campbell-Brown have brought fans to their feet atthe same track where thousands of New York City students regularly compete.

The grass has been laid, the courts are open, and the wind is at our backs. As Rivera said of thenew complex, “we need these fields for kids. They can now come and play, while staying awayfrom the streets.” He sparked the dreams of all attending: “Maybe this’ll be where a future Met orYankee comes from one day.” Similarly, McEnroe hopes to provide at Randall’s Island “a balanceof world-class tennis and fitness training, along with a New York experience, so maybe our kidswill be a little more creative, a little more intense, and will be able to think on their feet a littlebetter, like any New Yorker.”

“We’ve come a long way.”

RISF’s Board of Trustees is fortunate to work with a wide range of Park friends and fans to ensurethat our children, and our children’s children, can go outside and play. With this Review, we seek tomark a transitional moment in our history, share recent efforts and accomplishments, and expressour deep gratitude to all who have supported us along the way.

Outdoor Sports & ProgramsWhere NY Goes To Play

The great outdoors is an athlete’s friend – open air is a receptacle for unlimited energy, and in the exchange the athlete is recharged for another play, another day.At Randall’s Island, athletes of all ages benefit from this relationship with the natural

world in which we live – running along the Park’s waterfront pathways, stealing secondbase on one of its many green fields, sprinting on the Icahn Stadium track or racing to netat the Sportime tennis center. RISF has long realized that our primary responsibility is tomake the most of this treasured resource.

6

Track & FieldNew York City’s showcase for out-door track & field stands just asproudly now as it did on openingday in 2005. Icahn Stadium offers remarkable facilities for a wide rangeof meets, from local events such asthe Youth Jamboree to high schoolcompetitions like the New York Re-lays – as well as international eventswith Olympic stars, like DiamondLeague’s adidas Grand Prix. The JesseOwens Track & Field program, whichprovides free track & field instructionto local children, ensures that NewYork City will continue to foster thechampions of the future.

TennisThe Sportime at Randall’s Island tennis center offers20 indoor/outdoor courts, with a choice of Har-Truclay or Deco-Turf hard court surfaces, and includesa stadium court with seating for 2000 as well asfood and beverage service, pro shops, and exerciseand locker rooms. Sportime’s World TeamTennisPro League team, the NY Sportimes, is housed at Randall’s Island, bringing marquee players and legends to the park during the summer months. The John McEnroe Tennis Academy offers world-class training to young athletes.

GolfA refurbished Randall’sIsland Golf Center offersan indoor/outdoor two-tier driving range with80 stalls, a 36-hole minigolf course, a shortgame area with sandbunker and grass tees, laser measured targets, and a upgraded caféwith free wi-fi.

Nature ProgramsEnvironmental exploration at Randall’s Island takes place especially at 9 acres ofrestored tidal salt marsh and freshwaterwetlands sites. Through the Wetland Stew-ardship program, local, regional, nationaland even international visitors – childrenand adults – are met by RISF staff membersand provided with information on thefunctioning of the wetlands.

9

DanceDance programs are run inIcahn Stadium’s fitness studio, which offers mirrored walls, ballet bars and a resilient floor, and instruction is provided freeof charge.

Jesse Owens Track & Field

The Jesse Owens Track & Field program,in partnership with the New York Road Runners Foundation, is run afterschool during the fall and spring seasons.Participants from neighboring CBOs aretaught skills in high jump, long jump, hurdles, sprinting, long distance runningand turbo javelin throwing.

Youth Programs Summer Camp

The RISF Summer Camp features instruction in softball, soccer, track & field, golf, tennis, horsebackriding, volleyball, basketball and dance fitness, as well as courses in conga drums and nature explorations. The camp, which is provided free of charge by RISF to children from local community-based organizations, is organized on a modular basis, which allows groups to attend as best suitstheir overall schedule.

Tennis & Golf

Free Tennis and Golf programsare run in partnership with theSportime Tennis Center and theRandall’s Island Golf Center andinstruction is provided free ofcharge by their professional staff.

GardensThe Park offers a variety of planted and themedgardens and landscaped areas, all created usingnative species and sustainable practices. Thesegardens offer ongoing opportunities for volun-teers – corporate and school groups, childrenand families – to participate in Island steward-ship. RISF’s Urban Farm offers guided visits forschool groups in partnership with GrowNYC.

WildlifeThe Park hosts a greater variety of wildlife than might be expected in the middle of one of the world’s mostpopulous cities, and with restoration of its natural areas we expect to become home to many more species. The restored salt marsh is attracting migratory and resident wading birds, shorebirds, and waterfowl, in particular providing foraging grounds for the great and snowy egrets and black-crowned and yellow-crowned night herons that nest on South Brother Island, nearby. It also provides habitat for blue crabs, fiddler crabs and ribbed mussels as well as nursery grounds and feeding habitat for finfish and shellfish. The restored freshwater wetlands are providing critical habitat for butterflies and several species of dragonflies and damselflies that require slow-moving water, and habitat for birds such as red-winged black-birds, marsh wrens, common yellow throats, swamp sparrows and green herons. Reported sightingsthroughout the Park include pheasants, wild geese, raccoons, red-tailed hawks and rabbits.

Environmental ExplorationsRISF has worked in the past decade to bring thousands of childrento the Island for environmental studies. In 2010, following restora-tion of 9 acres of salt marsh and freshwater wetlands, the Foundationimplemented the new Randall’s Island Wetlands Stewardship program, to provide on-site maintenance, foster volunteer efforts, and increase outreach to and programs for local public schoolgroups. RISF is developing partnerships with local, regional and national environmental advocacy groups to continue to improve thePark’s natural areas and increase local stewardship. 1110

PathwaysBicycle and pedestrian pathwayshave been designed to run alongthe Island’s entire waterfront, providing dedicated non-vehicu-lar access throughout the Park. Many routes have already beenconstructed, and the remainingpathways are in process and shallsoon be complete. These mean-dering routes – free from cars, trucks and buses – will radicallyenhance the Island’s experiencefor strollers, runners, cyclists andanyone traveling to and from thePark’s new fields and facilities.

Visitors can access Randall’s Island Park in anumber of ways, and a key mission of RISF hasbeen to increase the variety and quality of op-

portunities. We work especially to plan carefully forimproved non-vehicular access to the Park, and to in-crease public transportation routes and modes. Park-ing areas have been relocated in favor of greeningefforts, condensed, and mostly limited to areas not fa-vorable to natural growth (e.g. under the RFK Bridgespans). By reducing vehicular emissions and nonpointsource pollution, we aim to preserve the remarkablenatural resources on the Island as well as protect thehealth of the surrounding waterways. We are buildingmiles of waterfront bicycle and pedestrian pathways, advocating for increased public transportation, foster-ing ferry service and other water-based access, andworking to improve existing routes to and around thePark. (See Randall’s Island Park Access Guide.)

Page 10: Randall’s Island Sports Foundation Review Go Outside And Play!AKF Consulting Group Hector Gesualdo Executive Director ASPIRA of New York, Inc. Jerome L. Goldman Deputy Global Vice

Waterfront RestorationThe Island’s nearly 5 miles of shoreline is being redesigned, and in 2009 RISF began work on rebuilding andrestoring seawall and rip-rap along its entire perimeter. We aim to protect the Park from erosion and solidifyits edge to support the new fields and especially the current and upcoming waterfront bicycle and pedestrianroutes. Shoring up the water’s edge protects the integrity of the Island and allows for increased and improvedaccess to this unique waterfront.

VolunteerProjects

RISF seeks to foster volunteerprojects and increase localstewardship. We are working tobuild a coalition of local com-munity-based organizations, schools, advocacy groups andrelevant government agencies,in order to responsibly care forand preserve Randall’s IslandPark. By increasing our on-sitecapacity and expertise, and bystrengthening alliances, wehope to welcome an increasingnumber of interested and dedi-cated friends and fans to the Is-land to clear, plant, weed andnurture this natural oasis in themiddle of New York City.

Caring for the Great OutdoorsPreservation

The MillionTrees ofPlaNYC

Mayor Michael Bloomberghas set the goal of planting1,000,000 trees throughPLaNYC – and as part ofthis effort RISF is bringing4,000 new trees to Ran-dall’s Island Park. We areworking with corporateand other volunteergroups to plant the trees,in close collaboration withthe Parks Department.

17

WetlandsThe Randall’s Island WetlandsStewardship program enablesRISF to care for more than 9acres of restored salt marsh andfreshwater wetlands which re-duce water pollution and serveas habitat for a range of wildlifespecies. The Parks Department’sNatural Resources Group worksclosely with RISF to preserve andmaintain these resources, and tobring increased volunteer stew-ardship to the sites. We are es-pecially interested in increasingthe number of “wetlands stew-ards” among local children –building an awareness of theirconnection to the natural world,in New York City and beyond.

Careful planninghas guided recon-figuration and re-

opened underutilizedcorners of the Park. His-torically, the Island hasplayed host to a range ofinstitutions necessary tothe responsible function-ing of a major metropol-itan area. By workingclosely with our neigh-bors, however, RISF hasbeen able to better man-age this overlap of uses, and to maximize theparkland available forpublic recreation and en-joyment. Together, wecan realize the enormouspotential of this 480-acreisland in the middle ofNew York City.

Dozens of acres ofparkland have beenreclaimed for public

use since RISF’s inception in1992. Overgrown areashave been cleared and ren-dered accessible, and wa-terfront acreage has beenreclaimed from institutionaluse to allow for publicpathways. Wetlands havebeen cleared of construc-tion debris and garbageand restored as natural pol-lution filtration and wildlifehabitat. Dilapidated build-ings have been removed tomake way for new playingfields, and spans of asphalthave been replaced bywaves of green.

Come Outside and Play:Letter From The Executive Director

After years of planning and development, Randall’s Island now extends to all New Yorkersan unprecedented invitation to come and play outdoors – through exploration of the Park’srestored natural areas, entertainment at waterfront venues of all kinds, and sports in world-

class facilities and on dozens of new green fields. RISF has fostered these amazing improvementsthrough the support of a wide range of committed donors, including those on the following pages,to whom we wish to give our sincere thanks.

Together, we have built a unique New York City resource, and RISF now seeks to develop responsible and creative stewardship toward the Island’s long-term wellbeing. As we frame outour goals for the coming years, our guiding mission is to better connect and unite the Park’s friendsand supporters. We are seeking to diversify the ways in which RISF reaches out, as well as to improve our ability to build on the generosity of those who donate time, funding or other support. We are exploring increased communications and opportunities for volunteerism and service, andwe seek to reward such involvement with responsive membership programs, building communityand a local sense of ownership.

A small but key indicator of this current mission is evident in our 2010 Review: throughout, youwill see links provided to the new (and still improving) RISF website as well as to websites of RISF’spartners in stewardship of the Island. The interactive, informative network we hope to create inthis document is a step toward a shared and increasingly expansive future.

Many thanks, and please stay in touch; this is the fun part.
