PIINHS wrestles nutrition emergency

Paliparan II National High School led by TLE Club held its Nutrition Month celebration with the

theme “Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan,” July 31.

This year’s theme zeroes in on malnutrition caused by  severely threatened food security during

disastrous situations known as nutrition emergency. The school’s Nutrition Month Celebration aimed to

highlight good health and disaster preparedness and to promote awareness among individuals about

the dilemma of the worsening nutritional status in the course of calamities our country encounters.

Various activities such as Nutri-quiz Bee, Essay Writing Contest, Poster Making contest, Amazing

Cooking Teens, Kitchen Musical, and Mr. and Ms. Fit were partook by students from Grade 7 to 4th

 year

level.

Sheandrey Almario from 9-______ and Dhanry Honor from 4-______ rocked their way to the top

as they were crowned as Mr. and Ms. Fit 2014.

Rosetta: the first in space, a history to watch out for

In ancient times, comets were thought of by people to predict the future. Today, ESA (European

Space Agency) thinks that they can acquaint us with the past.

Comets are believed to have crashed into Earth churning out organic materials responsible for

the inception of life. Lindsay Keller, co-investigator for the Stardust mission, said that one of their first

studies of the mission’s samples "showed abundant hydrocarbons in many of the particles." This

supports the theory that comets might have brought these hydrocarbons, the “building blocks” of life to

Earth. Some scientists think that comets may have come into being about the same time as the huge

planets of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago with similar components of ice and dust emitted from

the sun’s birth. Others, though, think that these heavenly bodies contain interstellar stuff even older

than our solar system. Whatever speculations people might think about these objects, one thing’s worth

betting: Comets hold pristine records about the origin of our world.

With these, ESA approved the International Rosetta Mission in November 1993 as a Cornerstone

Mission in ESA's Horizons 2000 science program to make contact with comet 67P/Churyumov-

Gerasimenko. It was launched March 2 of 2004 at 7:17. Rosetta was named after the prominent Rosetta

stone, a black basalt, that made way for the interpretation of Egyptian hieroglyphics 200 years ago. It is

on a 10-year mission and will be the first spacecraft to soft-land a robot on a comet. Rosetta will also be

the first spacecraft to escort a comet as it enters our inner solar system, examining at close range how

the comet revolutionizes as the Sun’s heat transforms it into the luminous body that has terrified and

inspired people for hundreds of years.

"This unique science period will reveal the dynamic evolution of the nucleus as never seenbefore, allowing us to build up a thorough description of all aspects of the comet, its local environment

and revealing how it changes even on a daily basis," says Matt Taylor, ESA's Rosetta project scientist.

Michael Combi, Tamas Gombosi, K.C. Hansen, Tom McCord, Jean Philippe Comb, Hunter Waite,

and Marilia Samara are the ones considerably disguised as forensic detectives for celestial bodies slash

scientists responsible for the inspection of chemicals, ions and isotopes inside of C-G (Comet

Churyumov-Gerasimenko), as well as their number and distribution.

Conversely, NASA contributed three of the orbiter’s instruments (ALICE, MIRO, and IES) and part

of the electronics package. NASA's Deep Space Network provides support for ESA's Ground Station

Network for spacecraft tracking and navigation. NASA’s scientists are also equally excited on the

anticipation Rosetta brings to them.

Currently, the spacecraft has successfully joins C-G as it journeys around the sun. The

momentous event happened last August 6, 2014 and while orbiting overhead, Rosetta’s onboard

sensors will map the comet's surface and magnetic field, measure outflow rates, and much more.

Together, the orbiter and lander (Philae lander) will build up the first 3D picture of the layers and

pockets under the exterior of a comet.

Rosetta’s Philae is estimated to land on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12,

2014 at site J. And because a comet has not that much gravity, the lander will affix itself with harpoons.

"The feet may drill into something crunchy like permafrost, or maybe into something rock solid," saysClaudia Alexander, project scientist for the U.S. Rosetta Project at JPL.

Rosetta will go after the comet throughout 2015. After accompanying comet C-G past the sun’s

perihelion (closest point to the Sun), Rosetta will cease its mission. It’s truly a history to watch out for.
