September 2018
Greetings from Grande du Virginie to all Locales. Hope you are all enjoying your summer.
My name is David Stephens, and I thank you for electing me as your
Grande Chef de Train for the 2018 – 2019 year.
Know that we are in the 2018 – 2019 year, and it is time to start getting your renewals in to your Locales so that they can get them sent to National. If you need to start recruiting this is the best time start. Let’s aim high to make Grande du Virginie number one in membership this year.
Hope to see you all at our Fall Cheminot.

June 2018
Happy September Grand du Virginia. We have made it through another La Societe Nurses Training Year! For the most part it was a successful year. We had 6 Locales request and sell pins. We had 4 Locales provide End of Year Reports. We reported 4 Graduated RN’s, 1 Under Graduate Scholarship with a total of $20,425.00 expended or donated. I am continuing to serve as your Grand Directeur for Nurses Training. While attending Nationale Promenade September 10-14, 2018 in Louisville Kentucky I will consign some of the 2019 Nurses Training Pins and will have them for issue at our Fall Cheminot/Annual Wreck in Colonial Heights October 13. The funds we sell on pins or donate to the Boland Trust Fund allows today’s students to become the Nurses and Doctors of tomorrow. Thank you for all you do for Grand du Virginia and La Societe! The Stranger:
A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family.
The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught
me to obey. But the stranger....was our storyteller.
He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the
future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry.
The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever
prayed for the stranger to leave.)
Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home –not from us, our friends or any visitors.
Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes
look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished.
He talked freely, much too freely about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and even embarrassing. I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he
opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.
More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner,
waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.
His name?.... We just call him 'TV.' He has a wife now....we call her 'Computer.'
Their first child is "Cell Phone". Their second child "I Pod "
And JUST BORN A FEW YEARS AGO WAS a Grandchild: IPAD OH MY----HOW TRUE THIS IS!!!

[email protected] September 2018 Salut to all Voyageur Militaire of Grande du Virginia! It’s your Grand Correspondant. I’m sure you’ve been wondering where the heck I’ve been. Well, between my ISP blocking my me emails and now Microsoft not letting me send email, I can’t stand it. No excuses, just what is happening. That said, I think I’m on the way to getting all this corrected. It’s not been an easy transition to say the least. The 99th annual Promenade Nationale is right around the corner, 11 – 15 September in Louisville, Kentucky. (Or should I say Kane-tuc-ee.) I hope to see many of your there. This will be my forth visit to Promenade Nationale and my first visit to the Bluegrass State. Hopefully by now, you’ve sent your annual reports, if not please get them out ASAP. Now a word in support of the Grande L’ Editeur. If you are a Grand Officer or Director, please get your articles of the Loco Motion News submitted in time for John to include them in newsletter. (Yes, I’m guilty of not getting them to him until the last minute.) If he does not get articles submitted, soon the Loco Motion News will go the way of the Dodo bird. So, please get those articles in. Also, if you are not receiving the article via email and can do so, please let us know. We have locations already for the Fall and Winter Cheminot, but I would like to have written verification that Voiture Locale 1184 is committed to the one day Spring Cheminot. Each morning that you wake up, remember, every day is a GREAT DAY to be a 40&8er. God Bless La Societe and God Bless the United States. Grande Directeur Carville Star September 2018
Greetings Grand du Virginie…!
I hope you are all having a great summer. My name is Jerry Anderson Jr. and I am continuing to serve as your Grand Directeur for Carville Star. It is an honor for me to represent and serve, Grand du Virginia’s membership with this very worthy, yet little known program. Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) is an infection caused by bacteria called
Mycobacterium leprous. These bacteria grow very slowly and it may take up to 20 years to develop signs of the infection. Our monetary support of the Carville Star, allows folks to spread the news of Hansen’s disease throughout the world’s affected regions. Further, by supporting hospitals, newspaper and Carville home, our monetary support has an immediate and direct impact within this great program. Last year, Grand du VA performed well in supporting this program. Our donations and efforts in the amount of 375.00 dollars made an impact and were gratefully received at Carville Star home. Thank you Dames of Grand du VA, for your generous donation to the Carville Star home. Voyageurs of Grand du VA, I say Thank you for “participating” in the program. Voiture Locaux 976, 977, 1569, 380, and V86 for your generous contributions in the pin department. Our Grand du VA contribution was 721.00 dollars, not too shabby for just a few participants. For the year 2018/2019, I would like to challenge every active Voiture to support this wonderful program. See if your Locale can support, not only pin sales, but maybe support a clinic or county or just a simple subscription to the newsletter. The county/clinic is a 50 dollar contribution and the newsletter subscription is 2.00 dollars. Grand du VA, let’s set a goal of 1000.00 dollars this year, what do ya say?. It won’t take much more effort…. and UNLIKE the RED CROSS, every dime of your contribution goes to Hansen’s disease research, Carville Home/museum and news publications. Thank You for the opportunity of representing each of you as your Grand Directeur and I look forward to seeing you all at Fall Cheminot 2018. Thank you Voyageur Nelson Dillehunt for providing a picture of the 2019 Carville Star pin.
GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Warmest Regards

NPCC = NATIONAL PASSE CHEFS CLUB
Each year there are at least 13 Locale Chefs and one Grande Chef in Grande du Virginia. How many are members of the NPCC ? Would you believe only 60 Chef Passe from Virginia belong. The object of the organization of the club are as follows; To honor, thru membership, those voyagers who have served their Voiture Locale and/or Grand Voiture as Chef de Gare; To directly support the Forty & Eighter Magazine with a $25,000.00 per year donation derived from membership dues, memorial donations, gifts and other special fund raising projects that the club may undertake; To increase comradery between club members who have common bonds, and who are "Etiam Servans" (Still Serving). Interested ? talk to the Grande Correspondant/Le Editor

Grande DIRECTEUR BOXCAR
September 2018
Hello everyone,
It's a new year and it’s time to start thinking about the boxcar pins and cards. Once National is over we should have them available for purchase by the Voitures. If you already know how many pins and cards you will need, contact me at [email protected] .
Let's make this a record year by having the most boxcar pins and cards sold. The donation is for a much needed cause that supports our organization. So start preparing yourself to get in the selling mode.
Merci, Geri Stephens

Hello Dames:
Good news, we still have a Grande. We will be seeing some changes this year since Voiture Locale 977 disbanded. The Dames of 977 will have to transfer to Cabane Locale 86 or 1569. We will discuss this at the October Grande. Please let me know which Cabane you prefer. I hope all Dames will attend the October Grande. We have a lot of business to discuss. Membership is the only thing that keeps our great organization in existence. Get your renewals in now. Also, always be looking for new members. We could really use some new blood to help us out. Speaking of new blood, Angie Anderson has agreed to be Grande Correspondant this year. I know she will be a big help to us.
Hope to see everyone in October.

September 2018
I am looking forward to working with the Chefs in the East this year. Chef Yowell and I have recently received our assignments and we will be spending the time to contact each locale. I thank all of those who attended the Grande Promenade and I hope to see everyone at the Fall Cheminot and Grande Wreck at VL1530, or at Promenade Nationale in Louisville Kentucky. Should anyone need a new copy of the 40&8 Ritual Handbook, please let me know. I will be picking up copies for my locale and I will be glad to pick up some and make them available at the Fall Cheminot.
I would also like to discuss Public Relations:
As we start the new year, I would like for all the locales to be proactive and add social media such as Twitter and Facebook. In order for our fine organization to prosper in the near future, we need to get our message out and social media is the way our voices to be heard.
Here are the Social media pages for the Grande:

GRANDE DIRECTEUR CHILD WEL-FARE
September 2018
Salute Voyageurs Militaire First off let me thank you very much for nominat-ing me again for my third year as your Directeur of
Child Welfare. Merci The only thing I have to start off is letting you know the image of our New
pin is shown in the upper right corner of this article. I will have a hundred available at our next prom, the Wrecking prom at Voiture 1530. No date has been put out for this yet. It might also come out in this publication?
I missed our last Grande Prom due to my car breaking down on the road. I will thank all that supported Child Welfare last year and wish we can do better this year.
For all of Voiture Directeurs of Child Welfare, remember the Polo shirts you can have made with your names and Voiture numbers mentioned on them. You can wear them proudly like I do constantly. And Carry child Welfare Pins with you in your travels.
The only thing I saw we did not do as good as the year prior was the reports at the end of our year. I only received reports from three out of thirteen Voiture Locales.
I will see some of you at the Nationale Prom in Louisville Kentucky next month and the rest of you at our next Grande Cheminot.
If you like to see the images of all our next year pins you can see them on my Website, Rolling Trains under programs or Albums. The only two that still are not available are Box Car and the Star. Oh yea the Americanism pin can be a Necklaces or a pin.

Charlottesville V-1184 Visits WWI Cemeteries
Past Chef de Gare Pat Kelly of V`1184, visited American World War 1 cemeteries in France 11-20 June 2018. The trip was hosted by the French Society, Sons of the Amirian Revolution. The trip included stops at Aisne-Marne Cemetery, Meuse-Argonne Cemetery, Oisne-Aisne Cemetery, the town of Chateau-Thierry, where the Third Infantry Division stopped the German drive on Paris in 1918 and earned the sobrequet "Rock of the Marne"; Chateau-Theirry Monument, the 91st Infantry Division Monument at Mount Falcon, Chemin des Dames historical site, Bois de la Marine (Bella Wood), the Champaine Region, Reims, Caen, the Normandy Cemetery and Aerromanche.
The Oisne-Aisne Cemetery Superintendent, Huburt O. Caloud presented a talk concerning the American Battle Monuments Commission efforts to preserve the memory and service of America's World War 1 doughboys still buried in France. The ABMC is performing an outstanding service to the American People in their maintenance of the American cemeteries in France. All are beautifully maintained to perpetuate the memory of the sacrifice of the Doughboy in France. The People of France are very aware of the sacrifices of the United States in World War I and World War II. in every city we visited, French men and women would comment on some aspect of the war that had touched their families, and the sacrifice Americans had made for France.
