Jack Elway is an accomplished man-former head football coach at Stanford University and the father of legendary Hall of Fame quarterback, John Elway. He was once asked how he dealt with being an expert in the same field his son had chosen as a profession. Jack's response was: "In your son's life, he'll have many mentors, many coaches, many men to teach and motivate and correct him. But he will only have one father. All you have to do is love him."

After his second Super Bowl loss, the younger Elway was, of course, devastated. It wasn't merely a team loss. John himself hadn't played well and the background noise was, "He can't win the big one" (which he later did twice). That evening his father visited him. He didn't break down his performance or offer any advice. He just sat with him. It was one of those moments in which Jack knew his son didn't need a coach-he needed a dad.

Fathers, there are many roles you will play in the lives of your sons or daughters. But always keep in mind that your greatest role is to let them know they are always loved by you, their earthly father, as we are loved by our Heavenly Father.

Next Week’s TNT

Next week (June 25th) we will meet at the building for ice creams sundaes and water games. We’ll do water balloons, slip and slide, and hopefully water kickball. If you want to fish in the pond after we’re done, you’re welcome to do that, as well.

Prayers for Impact Please be praying for the thirty-two of us who are at Impact this week. Our senior group is currently en route while our junior group heads back tomorrow.

Also be praying for this week as our senior high spends the week at Lipscomb. Please pray for enriched relationships and personal conviction.

Auditorium Class

I’ll resume class in the auditorium next Sunday, speaking on the “Acts 2 church in a 21st century world.” I hope parents of our students will join us in that class as we look at the challenges facing us in the future.

B(ulletin)log I don’t have any perspective on what it’s like to grow up without a father. I’m one of the lucky ones. At almost forty years of age, if you asked me to name my hero, my dad would still be atop the list. In an ideal world, that’s the way it would be with every boy. But we don’t live in an ideal world, and the results of that are evident all around us. It’s a hard thing to admit sometimes that my dad is simply smarter than me. He’s wiser than me to be sure, but also smarter. Often times he can dismantle my best argument in a sentence or two, causing me to reevaluate my position. It’s funny the memories your brain chooses to remember decades after they’ve occurred. I can remember catching crawdads with my dad when I was very young, and cooking them up in our kitchen. I remember playing on a dirt baseball field in Springtown, Texas, also at a very young age. I remember riding four-wheelers alongside him long before anyone that age should have been doing so. I remember vacations and talks about girls and rushing to the hospital a time or two. I remember crushing emotional moments when he was there to comfort me and a couple of arguments that made my blood boil. But in all that he has ever done, he has looked out for my well-being, and tried to direct my path correctly. Dads aren’t perfect, but mine comes close. I sometimes feel a sense of failure in having moved so far away from him for all these years. I wish we had more time together. I wish my kids knew their Papa Fee the way I know him. Happy Father’s Day to all those dads who are heroes to their sons, whether still living or in heaven.

There are a few things that are on our VBS wish list:

• 2 liter bottles—empty • Heavy duty cardboard

• Water or Soda bottles larger than 20 oz.—empty • Colorful duct tape

• Red & Orange tissue paper • Someone to bake star cookies

Plan now to join us July 28-31 for VBS 2019: ALIENS! This year, we will challenge our students to think about what 1 Peter 2:11 means when it calls us

“aliens and strangers in the world.”

VBS at Gulf Coast is truly a family event. There are classes for all ages. We will have meals each evening prior to VBS at 5:45-6:15 pm. More details to come!

VBS will be from 6:30-8:00 pm. Registration is MANDATORY, and you can find the link to register below. You can also register to volunteer! We need many

helping hands to make VBS a success!

We look forward to seeing you at VBS 2019: ALIENS!

"Like Father, Like Son”

2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. Genesis 12:2 NLT 6 I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them! 7 “I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. Genesis 17:6-7 NLT 19 But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant Genesis 17:19 NLT 1. GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO CONTINUE 2 The L appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you. 3 Live here as a foreigner in

this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father.4 I will cause your descendants to become as numerous as the stars of the sky, and I will give them all these lands. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed. Genesis 26:2-4 NLT

5 I will do this because Abraham listened to me and obeyed all my requirements, commands, decrees, and

instructions.” Genesis 26:5 NLT 2. LET THEM  BE AWARE OF YOUR CHARACTER FLAWS

6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar. 7 When the men who lived there asked Isaac about his wife, Rebekah, he said, “She is my sister.” He was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “They will kill me to get her, because she is so beautiful.” 8 But some time later, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out his window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah. 9 Immediately, Abimelech called for Isaac and exclaimed, “She is obviously your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” “Because I was afraid someone would kill me to get her from me,” Isaac replied. Genesis 26:6-9 NLT

3. MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU DO THINGS RIGHT 25 Then Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the Lord. He set up his camp at that place, and his servants dug another well. Genesis 26:25 NLT 7 Then the L appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the L, who had appeared to him. 8 After that, Abram traveled south and set up camp in the hill country, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built another altar and dedicated it to the L, and he worshiped the L. Genesis 12:7-8 NLT 3 From the Negev, they continued traveling by stages toward Bethel, and they pitched their tents between Bethel and Ai, where they had camped before. 4 This was the same place where Abram had built the altar, and there he worshiped the L again. Genesis 13:3-4 NLT 18 So Abram moved his camp to Hebron and settled near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. There he built another altar to the Lord. Genesis 13:18 NLT

CONNECTION QUESTIONS FOR June 16, 2019

“Like Father, Like Son”

1. What is the most important or significant lesson you learned from your father?

2. "You are just like your father" my mother used to say. Is that a compliment or a criticism usually? In what ways are you just like your father?

3. Abraham passed on to his son Isaac something to continue-a faith, traditions, character-what have you tried to pass on to your children?

4. Both Abraham and Isaac lied about their wives and compromised their character in the same way-do you believe sins and habits are handed down to children as we read in this story? Why is it so hard to be transparent with your children about your flaws?

5. Isaac built worship altars to God as he had seen his father do many times. Our children are going to see our faults because it is impossible to hide them. That's why we must be intentional about making sure they see our strengths as well. How can we make an intentional effort to do this?
