Range View Elementary An IB World School
Newsletter Volume 5, Issue 6 February 2015
From the Principal, Shelly Prenger
Dear Range View Families:
Happy Valentine’s Day a bit early! When I was young, I loved making valentine cards and then I became a mom, had three boys and getting them to sign their cards to take to school was a chore. It is funny how things change! I do still like making heart cookies, decorating the house with hearts and flowers, and getting anything with a heart on it. With that said, I would like to remind you of some things in a “heartful” way:
H ~ Help raise money for our school by saving BoxTops, ink cartridges, milk caps,
and soup labels.
E ~ Everyone in our Range View community is so important, for safety’s sake, please
remember to use the crosswalks.
A ~ Always know that we so appreciate our volunteers; when you come to help out
in the classroom we ask that you make arrangements for your young children.
R ~ Roll ahead as far as you can when dropping off and picking up in the east
parking lot; patience is the key.
T ~ Talking on your cell phone near the school causes a distraction and quite
possibly a danger to our students; please wait until you are away from the
school.
I often like to remember that random acts of kindness and true care and concern for others often make me feel better than the person I am directing it towards.
Have a great month ahead!
Shelly Prenger, Principal

An important element in our instructional delivery model within the PYP is our use of an inquiry approach to teaching. This requires teachers to create thoughtful, open-‐ended questions that are relevant, engaging, challenging and significant. Our goal is to get kids to think and elaborate on their answers. As a parent, I experienced that my questions about school were often answered with “yes,” “no,” or “nothing.” Recently I found a site that gives examples of questions to help parents with their after-‐school conversations and avoid the usual one-‐word responses. These examples were:
Tell me about the best part of your day. What was the hardest thing you had to do today? Did any of your classmates do anything funny? Tell me about what you read in class. Who did you play with today? What did you play? Do you think (subject) is too easy or too hard? What’s the biggest difference between this year and last year? What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think they
are fair? Who did you sit with at lunch? Can you show me something you learned or did today?
I hope these examples give you a starting point to rethink how you want to word your questions so you can learn more about what is happening during your child’s school day. Shauna Curtis IB Coordinator 10 Questions to Ask Your Child About His Day at School | Parents | Scholastic.com

• Continue to reload it and use it for grocery purchases at your favorite store.
• The school receives a percentage of the funds reloaded.

Square One Fundraiser
In the month of January all K-5 Range View students created a piece of artwork for the Square One Fundraiser. Square One is a fundraiser organization that reproduces student artwork onto a variety of items such as coffee mugs, T-shirts, magnets, water bottles etc.
Range View artwork will be finished and shipped to Square One on February 4th. Shortly after, order forms and art examples will be sent home with your students. If you choose to participate in the fundraiser, know that your contributions will go towards stocking the Range View art room with new art supplies. The deadline date for orders will be March 18th. Expect your orders to arrive the second week of April. Thanks for your support!

Medicine Safety Parent Fact SheetWhen it comes to teaching children how to stay healthy, it’s smart to start early. One subject where open and honest communication with your children is important, is the safe and proper use of medicine and substance abuse prevention.
As a parent of an elementary school-aged child, it might seem hard to imagine talking to your 5-10 year old about this serious topic. However, you can take action today. There are simple ways to begin conversations, provide children with information about the safe use of medicine, and guide them to make good decisions, today and in the future.
FactMore than 80% of ER visits for medication overdoses happen because children under 12 have taken medications on their own.
What You Can DoKeep ALL prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter medicine and vitamins locked up and out of reach.
FactEach year, more than 70,000 children under 18 end up in the ER due to unintentional medication overdoses.
What You Can DoO Teach children how to take medicine properly,
how to follow directions, and how to read the label.
O Do not tell children that medicine or vitamins are candy, to get them to take it.
O Make sure children know only to take medicine or vitamins from a parent or another trusted grownup.
