playing this Saturday. I promise, you will not want to miss our speaker. Our October speaker will be Mr. Al Arnold. He will be speaking about is African American ancestors that served in the Civil War under Gen. Lee and Gen.

Nathan Bedford Forrest! You won't get this opportunity often so, invite a friend, come early, and as sure as we will have our Turkey Shoot booth set up at Beauvoir for Fall Muster on the 3rd weekend in October again this year, I'll probably see

you at our next meeting at Penn's in Brandon on October 3 at 7:00pm.

Mustering the Confederate Soldier

The mustering of soldiers today has changed very little over time. In 1861 to 1865 the men

who were enlisted in the different units from towns and country side were men who often knew

each other very well in that many if not most came from local churches and communities. On

many occasions the pastor of the local church would go off to war with the men of his

community. Some recruits even consisted of almost the entire family. I know for a fact that my

mother’s family had over 12 related Biffles , fathers, sons, uncles, cousins, and distance enlist

with the Tennessee Calvary from the rank of Colonel to Private.. Most Confederate soldiers

were under the age of 30 at their time of enlistment.

Today the Confederate Army consists of not just farmers but also of many different types of

trades: carpenters, clerks, blacksmiths, students, etc. While diverse in our occupations we still

reflect the unity of those who have gone before us.

Times have not changed much from the period of the War of aggression in the 1860s. Each

of you who are a part of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, your wife, and children reflect the

same beliefs in a cause which has never faded. In 1860 men enlisted as an adult, today all of

our families from single Adults to husbands, wives, children are a real part of the Sons of

Confederate Veterans. The world may war against our faith and cause but!

Adjutant’s Report By: Sid Boteler

Fellow Compatriots: Many of you are aware there is an ever-growing movement across our nation to eradicate every vestige of Southern History and Godly Principles we, sons of the south hold dear. Certain organizations and people(s) demonize our Confederate ancestors with viciousness and contempt. In addition many of our great Christian Southerners such as Robert E. Lee are spoken of with malice and hatred. I don’t know about you but to me their lies and distortions cause anger. What can we as Sons of Confederate Veterans do to uphold the honor of those men, many of whom fought to their death to preserve the freedom their forefathers recorded in the U. S. Constitution. May I quote the late Sir Winston Churchill when he admonished the students at Harrow School during Britain’s darkest days of WW11 when he said “never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never – in nothing great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense ……..”

Gentlemen I must remind you, all outstanding SCV Membership Dues are payable this month. As of this writing our camp is far short of having all dues paid. These dues must be received at National Headquarters no later than Friday, October 30 this year. To comply with this deadline I will continue to accept membership dues through, Monday, October 26. I must have our camp’s dues in the mail the next day. As a reminder dues are $50.00; delinquent dues will cost $55.00.
