The Deadwood-Lead Economic Development Corporation (DLEDC) recently completed a professional housing
survey of the Lead and Deadwood area. This housing survey interviewed many managers, directors and
superintendents of various organizations to gather their thoughts and concerns on housing in the area. Now,
the DLEDC is interested in individual thoughts, opinions and concerns about housing. A short survey has been
created that will give every individual that opportunity. The survey will take approximately 5-6 minutes to
complete. This data will be used to determine recommendations, ideas and needs to interested developers.
The Lead-Deadwood area has several challenges with regards to housing and your thoughts will certainly
determine the direction(s) of housing in Lead and Deadwood. This survey will remain open through January
13, 2017. Please share accordingly with anyone who wishes to participate or to whom you think may benefit
from their participation. You may also pick up a hard copy at Deadwood City Hall. The DLEDC thanks everyone
for participating in such an important endeavor.

Rare Coin Found in Chinatown Excavation
“Racketeer nickels” have been known to collectors
since 1883. In 1883, the United States Mint struck a new five-cent coin that featured the head of Liberty similar to the portraits on the gold coins of the
time. On the reverse of the coin contained the Roman numeral “V” for 5 and omitted the word “cents” beneath the “V”. Dishonest people of the day plated the five cent coin with a fraction of a cent’s worth of gold, and passed them as five dollar gold pieces. Within several months after releasing the new five cent piece, the US Mint added the word “cents” under the “V” to discourage the continuation of this fraudulent act. In September of 2016, numismatic archaeology team of Dr. Margie Akin and Kevin Akin came to Deadwood and examined the coins excavated from Deadwood’s Chinatown archaeological assemblage. During their analysis, the Akin’s recognized the significance of the gold plated five cent piece. Though some of the plating was missing, the five cent piece was unmistakably a genuine “racketeer nickel” found during a controlled, archaeological excavation. A thorough analysis of the unprecedented find will be included in a forthcoming report. Meanwhile, Deadwood city officials are delighted that hard evidence has been found of still another criminal activity from Deadwood’s colorful past.
