What are the key concerns in managing remote locations? What are the key concerns in managing remote locations?

Lack of control and security Heterogeneous networks Threat of losing control and potential network issues Door open to dangerous security attacks

Growing sophistication of branch office network Growing number of services and applications Networks more diverse and complex to manage Puts a major strain on the IT staff.

Limited Budgets/Resources Not enough IT staffers to have one at each location Increasing complexity of the branch office has created a need to employ more

high-skilled IT resources to support the remote sites, resulting in increased operational costs

Virtual Media – What is it?Virtual Media – What is it?

Mount drives and media from the user’s desktop to servers in the data center during a KVM connection

Many applications Install software and patches Transfer files, i.e. backup data Run diagnostics Boot at the OS level

Types of virtual media Internal and USB mounted CDs and DVDs USB mass storage drives PC hard drives ISO image files from PC and remote drive

Gives the administrator expanded KVM control

Eliminates trips to the data center - saves time and money

Virtual Media – How does it work?Virtual Media – How does it work?

During a KVM connection, user requests a virtual media connection to a CD drive

The Dominion KSX II creates a “virtual connection” between the CD drive to a “virtual drive” on the target server

The “virtual drive” is mounted on the target server through the server’s USB port

The CD drive appears on the target server as a USB connected drive

The user can use the “virtual drive” from the server’s OS
