Description:
The project calls for the development of a master plan for a community church and school on a 25–acre site in the City of Oxnard. The plan envisions the creation of a community village. The village would contain a 1,400 seat sanctuary, a fellowship hall, an administration building, a middle school and a high school. The plan organized buildings around courtyards and interconnected arcades. This approach celebrates the Church’s view of fellowship, fosters interaction and reinforces the congregation’s strong sense of community.

Description:
A white chapel perched atop a hill, stark against the sky, rewards motorists who wander off Highway 46 in Shandon, California. Beyond its 17-foot high redwood doors the 900 s.f. chapel, rich with historic detail and artifacts from the William Randolph Hearst Collection, greets its visitor.
Among the artifacts is a 13th century Moorish carved wood ceiling. The ceiling hangs above redwood benches that face an altar featuring suspended sculptures of Christus and Two Thieves. Dating from the 14th century, the three crucifixes were carved in the Danube region of Germany. To the right of the altar is a replica of Our Lady of New York that reposes in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. On the other side of the altar is a fireplace surrounded by 11th century Spanish tile from the Hearst Collection. When the doors are closed, the chapel is suffused with a warm red glow as light filters through the red stained-glass rose window that replicates the Bernini sunburst window of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Seating approximately 100 people, the chapel doors can be opened to accommodate 700 people on benches in the tiled courtyard. Patterned after the Christopher Wren church at Piccadilly in London, the sloped courtyard carries sound and affords a clear view into the chapel from any spot in the 6,000 s.f. courtyard.

Architectural Design and Engineering
Description:
On a prominent site at the top of one of Ventura’s busiest streets, Community Presbyterian Church has a view of the entire city. The project was to design a replacement for the existing social building which was too small for the church’s growing congregation. The resulting building has a large fellowship room with a full service “commercial type” kitchen, a small lounge with a fireplace for more intimate gatherings, and an apartment for a member of the church’s staff. Site improvements include a large courtyard to link organize the new campus with the old and provide a space for outdoor fellowship. The architectural expression of the building’s exterior is meant to compliment the classic Mediterranean architecture of the existing sanctuary building while establishing its own presence.

Description:
Ventura Baptist Church was ready to build their long awaited auditorium and move their services out of the gymnasium. A plan for the expansion and renovation of their existing campus was prepared to provide improved pedestrian access, additional public parking, construction of the new auditorium, and the addition of outdoor spaces for programmed functions.
The plan’s implementation includes re-configured site circulation and parking improvements, fellowship plaza, entry lobby and 800–seat auditorium. The project’s architectural expression is derived from the Mission Revival context of the existing campus buildings.

Description:
The project called for the development a facility master plan for the First United Methodist Church, one of the City’s historic mid-town churches. The work included the preparation of an inventory of needed improvements to the facility’s existing buildings and site. Improvements to the project included renovation of the Social Hall interior, re-roofing the entire project, and re-design of the main courtyard. Of special interest, is the inclusion of the labyrinth design in the courtyard which recalls mans’ wandering journey through life.

Description:
The project was to design a non-denominational chapel and religious education facility for the U.S. Navy at the Naval Construction Battalion Center. During the programming phase, it became clear that the space needs of the building exceeded the prescribed budget for the project. In response to this, all assembly spaces in the facility were designed for multiple uses. The principal chapel is divisible to form a minor chapel and social hall, classrooms double as crafts and conference rooms, and the social hall is divisible into additional classrooms. The facility also includes administrative offices, a kitchen, and a formal entry courtyard which doubles as an exterior worship space. Design criteria for this project included acoustical reinforcement, flexible separation of internal functions, day lighting of most rooms, and the creation of a strong sacred presence without the use of specific religious symbolism.

Description:
The project was to prepare a master plan for a convent and retirement facility to be located on an existing parochial school campus for the Sisters of the Holy Cross. The master planning effort included development of an inventory and analysis of the existing facilities, a new plan for site utilization and circulation, and a new master plan incorporating existing and future facilities. Future uses included residential care units and a skilled nursing facility.
Among the findings of the existing facilities analysis was the need to replace the old school building due to structural deficiencies. The study concluded a new building was needed immediately. The resulting building is a mixed-use facility consisting of a chapel, flexible assembly space, a variety of crafts and meeting rooms, central kitchen and dining facility, and administrative offices. To meet the needs of an aging population, special attention was given to clarity of circulation, accessibility to the handicapped, day lighting of interior spaces, and appropriate acoustic design of all spaces.
