November’s Stay Play & Chat Grafton Childcare’s next Stay, Play and Chat will be held on Saturday 24th November, we thought we would give you a reminder this month so that you can pop the date up onto your calendars. Following really useful feedback received in our Annual Questionnaire we plan on splitting the morning into two sessions. This will hopefully make it less of a squash and a squeeze for our parents and children. We will not be allocating specific appointments, having tried this previously and finding it didn’t work, due to the high proportion of no shows or late arrivals. So this term we shall be trialling having two separate sessions. Between 9.30 am - 10.30 am will be specifically for all of our under 2 year olds and then between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm will be specifically for our 2, 3 and 4 years olds. Hopefully this will make it a little be quieter and less of a squash for the parents of our under twos. As we know that during our July Stay, Play and Chat some of the parents and children were a little bit overwhelmed by the numbers milling about and the noise levels. Obviously we don’t know what the weather will be like in November and if we will be able to make the use of our rear playground and front gardens. But we hope that we can have a few activities set up outside so that we can all spread out a little. We may have our Community Playthings Water Outlast Water Play System set up for the children and parents to enjoy and explore, so you may wish to bring along a change of clothes for your children! Tea, Squash & Cake will be available but sadly no parking as we may have our playground and kid's shed set up for the children to use. The main focus of the morning will be a chance for our existing parents to come along to view their child's Learning Journal and talk to their Key Worker or Buddies, if you would prefer a quieter spot, we will of course try to accommodate this. All parents will also be able to view and explore Grafton's various areas and resources which we have available and learn a little more about, The Curiosity Approach and how we are using it here at Grafton.

Children in Need this year falls on Friday 16th November and we will have a whole week filled with various fundraising mischievous shenanigans for the children to join in and enjoy. Here at Grafton Childcare we know that it is very easy to get Charity Burnout, which is why each year we ONLY raise funds for Children in Need, a fantastic charity we have supported for an epic 27 years! W e h a v e n o t y e t f i n a l i s e d everything we shall be doing during Children in Need Week between Monday 12th and Friday 16th November, but here is just a little taster of some of the Spotty Fun we have planned:- On Wednesday 14th & Friday 16th it will be a Spotty Day, all staff & children are asked to wear at least one spotty garment to support Pudsey, it could be simply a pair of spotty socks. But please don’t all rush out & purchase lots of Pudsey Merchandise simply look in your own wardrobes and see what you have to hand. We shall be asking for a £2 donation for wearing spotty gear. On Thursday 15th November, during o u r D e c o y P a r k W o o d l a n dExperience Trip, we shall be holding a sponsored Duck Race along the stream by Wolborough Fen. You can sponsor a duck for £2, 50% of the money raised will be donated to the winning duck and 50% to Pudsey. All week the children we be baking an assortment of Pudsey Bear inspired cookies and cakes, which we shall be selling to parents for £2 per box.

Here at Grafton Childcare we like to get involved with activities and trips out and about in our local community and the overwhelming consensus from our Annual Questionnaire confirmed that our parents love that we take our children out and about regularly. Following feedback we have this month provided a list of just a few of the dates when we plan on getting out and about around Newton Abbot, with our children. These outings are predominantly planned with our Preschool Children in mind, so our three and four years olds. However weather permitting we hope to take our older babies and our two year olds along as well. The decision to include our under three’s will be made by Natasha and Zoe on a trip by trip basis.

The Curiosity ApproachAuthentic Resources………. Trash to Treasure As part of our commitment to achieve The Curiosity Approach accreditation we have been thinking and reflecting about the Authentic Resources we have introduced here at Grafton Childcare. Denise and Phil have spent endless hours searching car boot sales, charity shops and auctions for the great delights we have found. One of the simplest ways to create curiosity, awe and wonder in early childhood is through finding old treasures that are new to the children things that they may not have seen before or not had the opportunity to investigate and explore.

The Benefits of Authentic Resources…

The way in which we think about resources really reflects how we think about children; what are the children capable of? How will they explore and approach the resources? Will the resources have the potential to draw them in, sending that subliminal invitation to learn or will it do the opposite and turn them away? Authentic Resources often attract children because of their aesthetic qualities.

Grafton Childcare is full of eclectic resources, items which create elements of exquisite opportunities for awe and wonder and promote a sense of curiosity for our children to investigate and explore.

Maria Montessori stated that young children process (absorb) everything through their senses. A well-prepared, child-centric environment is a sensorial one with reflects beauty, simplicity, and order. It provides well-chosen materials and activities with are required for learning. Rudolph Steiner said, in raising children, we need to continuously keep in mind how we can best create the most favourable environment for their imitative behaviour.

Learning to Respect our Resources

Here at Grafton Childcare gone are the majority of traditional plastic t o y s r e p l a c e d b y c e r a m i c s , breakables, and artefacts which encourage risk-taking and a deep understanding of respect for resources and belongings.

Sadly today’s culture is a throwaway society, items have no value, no m e a n i n g ! E a s i l y r e p l a c e d o r discarded with no second thought. Let’s teach our children to have respect for items, belongings, and resources. Let them be given responsibil ities to look after equipment and to share in the disappointment if items are broken.

We need to be getting our children prepared for life, instead of exams and college, encouraging them to handle such things at home or nursery. How will they know how to do this, if we don’t support and s caffo ld ch i l d ren t o hand l e resources in a safe environment, a place of trust and confidence in their abilities. Our children are so capable and extremely competent, is it us as adults that could potentially be holding them back and making our environments total risk-free zones.

Authentic resources promote opportunities for intrigue and sustained shared thinking. Levels of concentration and attention are increased, with children taking g reater c a re t o hand l e a nd manipulate breakables.

Stimulation of the Senses Far removed from the traditional plastic counterparts, authentic resources offer stimulation of the senses, through sight, smell and touch. Here we look to fill Grafton Childcare with items that have been rescued or recycled. We watch the children unlock the potential each one of these authentic treasures has for learning and discovery.

The ‘Real’ Thing What messages are we giving to our children, when everything we allow them to play with is PRETEND and potentially unbreakable! A child loves to mimic and replicate the actions of those significant people around them. And yet we give them miniature, child-sized replicas of the real thing. Are we undervaluing their play as pretend? Play is the work of children and should be valued for its incredible significance. Are we sending out messages to them that the play isn’t real; therefore it’s not worth giving them the “good stuff”?

Breakages Plastic toys and resources sadly offer no consequences; they can be dropped thrown or discarded without any repercussion. Children are unfortunately not learning to handle items with care or attention; plastic items can be dropped, thrown or discarded without any through or regard for the piece of equipment. Ceramics or other breakables help children understand that their actions have consequences and that we need to respect and value belongings. We need to teach children skills for life, how to negotiate problems and manage risks. Our children are incredibly capable, and they need to be offered challenges that stimulate their senses and provide them with the opportunity for cognitive development.

Introducing Breakables Here at Grafton Childcare we have already taken the first step and exchanged all of the plastic resources from our Under 3’s Role-play Area under the stairs with stainless steel because it is a great first step towards the introduction of authentic resources for our youngest babies and toddlers.

Up in the ‘Kids Shed’ we are introducing ceramic tea sets in small supervised groups of one adult to four children, where the children can be supported as they investigate and handle these items for the first time. Our staff model how to use the resources, explaining the need to be gentle when replacing them on the table to prevent items clashing together for example. Earthenware pottery makes a significant next step, as items are robust and stable. Whilst our more delicate pieces of fine bone china are reserved for our older and more capable children.

Our Ethical PhilosophyHere at Grafton Childcare we’ve made it our mission to make good choices when it comes to our shopping, we source products from all over the world, that hold the ethical credentials which we know are important to the Grafton Childcare Team, our customers, parents and most importantly the children we care for. As a parent you may be new to the idea of ethically-conscious buying or you're very passionate about a whole range of ethical issues that affect what you buy,

those values are personal to you. We want you to be assured that the childcare setting you have chosen for your children shares those same ideals. Why We Do What We Do

Here at Grafton Childcare we are striving to do our bit to protect our planet, and are constantly making efforts to find eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items we use and purchase such as our staff uniforms, foods, toys, equipment, resources and cleaners that do as little harm to the environment as possible. As part of our original commitment back in January 2018 to cut out the use of single use plastic products here following

the BBC’s Blue Planet programme. To help farmers and small businesses primarily in developing countries we try to purchase a minimum of 50% of fairly traded goods, guaranteeing fair prices at every stage of the supply chain so that our Staff, Parents and Children can feel good knowing not a single person has been exploited in the production process, and in fact fair prices are helping to alleviate poverty. We also look closer to home, to UK based brands that have been made right here in Britain utilising local resources and cutting carbon emissions, plastics and unnecessary packaging through unnecessary imports. And most importantly we do what we do to inspire our children to live life to the full, promoting a healthy lifestyle, encouraging our children to enjoy the beautiful world around us and letting you rest easy knowing we believe you’ve made the most positive choices for your children and our planet, by choosing Grafton Childcare to provide your childcare needs. So in each edition of our Grafton Newsletter we will share with you the ethical choices we make and how it will impact and effect the day to day running of Grafton

hildcare

Bits and Bobs Can we just say a HUGE thank you to our wonderful parents for all of the lovely comments they have made whilst dropping off their children, about the two new signs in our conservatory window. We have been using them to give parents gentle reminders of items they need to bring into nursery to help support their children and make their time with us more enjoyable. It is also great to see so many of you checking out our digital photo frame to see if you can spot your children’s photos from their previous weeks mischievous shenanigans.

Phonics Pots Please try to remember to send in your child’s Phonics Pot every single day filled with around three or four items beginning with our letter of the week. This is so that your child is able to take part in our daily phonics sessions with their friends, otherwise they may feel a little bit left out if they are not able to have a turn if they have not got their Phonics Pot with them.

Chatting with Key Workers Would you like to arrange to pop in and chat with Lara, Natasha or Zoe to discuss your child’s progress, or any worries you may have in confidence as it can sometimes be tricky to do so properly whilst dropping off and collecting your child. You could come in for a chat about our planned ‘Next Steps’ for your child, which you were sent with September’s Newsletter and hopefully have now had a chance to read fully. Lara is available on Wednesdays and Fridays between 5 - 6 pm. Natasha is available on Tuesdays and Thursdaysbetween 5 - 6 pm. Zoe is available on Mondays and Wednesdays between 5 - 6 pm. If you would like to arrange to come in just pop a note into your child’s Communication Booklet or Daily Diary and we will arrange a suitable evening in the next couple of weeks for you to do so.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

Since our September newsletter we have been thinking about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle here at Grafton Childcare as part of our Ethical Philosophy. We have been thinking about how we can cut out more of the single use plastic products we have used for years as well as lots of other energy saving and eco friendly changes. As you can imagine we use a huge amount of toilet paper here at Grafton, in September we swopped to a much more environmentally friendly brand. Produced by The catchily named company ‘Who Gives a Crap’. We thought we would trial their 100% Recycled Toilet Paper - 3-ply - Double Length Rolls, and wehave been very impressed with thequality. So much so that we havealso swopped over to their boxesof Forest Friendly Tissues. Againas I’m sure you can imagine we getthrough a huge amount of tissues. For our weekly baking sessions withthe children and in the kitchen wehave swopped over to the, ‘If YouCare’ brand’s Parchment Paper Rollfor use on our baking trays as wellas their Compostable UnbleachedCup Cake Cases and their Bags forour Kitchen Waste Caddy. We havebeen using their Paper Snack &Sandwich Bags to send home thechildren’s cookies for many months,so it made sense to swop over toother items in their range. Therange uses 100% unbleached or100% recycled materials in themanufacturing of their products. Thus making their products high inquality and low on environmentalimpact.

Lunch Time Collections & Drop Offs Can we please gently remind our parents that if your child is collected or dropped off at the end or beginning of one of our few morning and afternoon sessions which finish or start at 1.00 pm. Please try not to arrive before 1.00 pm, unless you have specifically arranged to do so because… After the children have finished lunch, which is usually around 12.45 am for our 2 year olds they sit down and enjoy one of our Rhyme Time Sessions with Tasha. Which is when we all enjoy sharing our range of great books from the amazing series of Barefoot Books with the accompanying singalong CD’s and of course sing lots of regular popular old and modern Nursery Rhymes. Our favourite books at the moment are, The Journey Home

from Grandpa’s; A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea; A Farmers Life for Me; Knick Knack Paddy Whack; Up, Up, Up; Portside Pirates; Dinosaur Rap; Space Song Rocket

Ride and not forgetting Magic Train Ride. Our 3 and 4 year olds whose lunch finishes

at around 12.30 pm pop into the lounge with Lara and enjoy their daily Jolly Phonics and Stage One Phonics sessions

and enjoy singing away to our Jolly Phonics CD. They will also go through their Phonics Pots if they didn’t have the

opportunity to do so before we had lunch. Whilst this is all happening the under two’s will be having their personal care needs met

by Zoe & Keeley and those who usually nap after lunch will be popped down for their specific and individual nap times. Phil will be finishing off clearing down the kitchen and making sure that he has left enough ready for those who will be staying for dinner just after 5 pm. Our remaining staff will be either setting up activities in the Playground, Playroom or Classroom for the afternoon sessions, completing Daily Diaries and Communications Booklets from the morning sessions and popping them back into specific bags, as well as dealing with children’s personal care. Or finishing off their own lunch breaks, so that they can be fed and watered ready for our afternoon of mischievous shenanigans which commence promptly at 1 pm. So Please don’t feel offended ‘if’ we may not rush to answer the door between 12.50 - 12.55 as you can see all of the staff are working hard to make sure that all of our children get the maximum amount out of all of their sessions here.

Extra Sessions in ! Term

Would you like to book any extra sessions between the 22nd October and 26th O c t o b e r a n d t a k e advantage of our, ‘Half-Term Special’ of only £30 for one days Qua l i ty Childcare, for a max of 10 hours. These must be extra days on top of your normal c o n t r a c t e d d a y s a n d booked and paid for in advance. We have a limited number of days available during October Half-term, so book now to guarantee any Extra Autumn Half-term Sessions for your child. Coats & Supporting School Readiness

A huge shout out t o a l l o f o u r amazing parents who are sending in warmer waterproof Winter Coats and Welly Boots so that we are fully equipped for our weekly trips to Newton Abbot Library and our Woodland experience trips to Bakers and Decoy Parks. May we encourage you to support your 2, 3 & 4 year olds by allowing them to undo and take off their coats themselves when you drop them off, this will also help ease congestion at the door in the mornings, as well as supporting school readiness.
