Rattlesnake Awareness We recently received some reports of snake
activity in the community, primarily in areas adjacent to greenbelts and wooded areas. In an effort to raise awareness in the community we ask that you please review the following information regarding Rattlesnakes with your family:
Rattlesnakes may or may not make a rattling noise before striking, so be on the alert when out walking or hiking. Follow these tips if you do encounter a rattlesnake:
• Move back slowly and deliberately.• If you can, put at least four to six feet between your
body and the reptile. • Then walk away.
Rattlesnakes do not chase people. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake follow these guidelines:
DON’T• Don't apply ice to the bitten area. • Don't make an incision of any kind on the
wound. • Don't try to suction or suck out the poison. -Don't
use a constriction band or tourniquet. • Don't administer drugs or alcohol. • Don't use electric shock treatment.
DO • Do remain calm and move away from the snake. • Do remove all jewelry, watches, etc., from the
affected area. • Do drink fluids to help prevent shock. • Do immobilize affected area and keep at level below
the heart.• Do decrease total body activity as much as
possible. • Do seek medical attention as soon as possible.
First Annual Chili Cook-off
Mayfield Ranch - enclave SubdiviSion
First Annual Chili Cook-off
held on MaR. 5th, 2011Submitted by Susan Manser
Way in the back of Mayfield Ranch off of Arterial H sits a small subdivision of 68 homes. A group of residents decided it was time to get out and mingle with our neighbors in the form of a chili cook off. The date was chosen so it wasn’t too cold but we needed a bit of a chill since no one wants to eat chili in 90 degree weather? We set the date for March 5th.
The chili cook-off evite was sent and lo and behold we had more than 57 people in attendance. Thirteen chilis entered, along with others who brought several different types of cornbread, beer bread, corn pudding, potatoes etc. and of course let’s not forget the dessert table!!! After four hours of tasting, more tasting, and more tasting, everyone completed their ballot to determine the winners. Congratulations to the winners!!o Grand Champion Earl Schwager! o Second Place went to Kim Wilson! o Third Place winner was Kevin White!
this is such a fun subdivision to live in with so many things going on throughout the year!!

service spotlight: Shrub Pruning
Submitted by Hank Wilson, Sunscape Landscape Pruning Pays off with the Right Knowledge and Timing
Pruning does more than give your shrubs an instantly uniform look. The reasons for this service are many. Pruning allows one to keep a plant’s size in check while directing the growth of a plant to look more dense or more open. It rejuvenates old shrubs and stimulates the growth of new blooms. Pruning also increases airflow and sunlight that the shrub may be denying to surrounding plant beds. And of course, pruning removes dead or diseased areas to improve the overall health and aesthetics of the plant.
While all of these benefits can be achieved with pruning, it’s important that the pruning is done at the proper time using the proper methods. A thorough knowledge of each plant’s blooming period and how each plant responds to cuts will lead to the best pruning results.
