I searched for my favorite image, a dragon, and found over 64,000 images and pic-tures of dragons. Now the hard part is

Blade DisposalThe Problem: How to safely dispose ofbroken needle, razor blades, etc., etc.

Solution: Take an old pill bottle, with achild proof lid. Write Sharps (or BladeDisposal) on the outside so you won'tget it mixed up with your other bottles. This will give you a safe place to disposeof dangerous material.

SPOTLIGHT on PRO-CARV Working and Tooling LeatherFormulation

DIRECTIONS:Dilute concentrate with water: 1 part PRO-CARV to 10 parts water is recommended for carvingand tooling. When immersing the leather for shaping or forming, add 8 oz. PRO-CARV to 3gallons of water.

NO CASING IS NECESSARY

Leather can be immersed or sponged with this solution. PRO-CARV eliminates the need tocase leather. PRO-CARV allows you to begin working with the leather after immersing for 3-5 minutes because of the very rapid penetration into even the thickest hide. Allow the surfaceto dry somewhat before beginning forming or carving.

Letter to a NewMember fromDustyHi Cindy,

I'm Dusty and I'll be mailing the RawHideGazette to you next month. If you wouldlike this months RawHide Gazette, I couldsend it to you. When I send them out it isin black and white.

There is a map on how to get to themeeting place and I hope that you will beable to show up for the meetings. We

have two more meetings before we go onsummer break. The dates are alwaysposted on the front page of the issue, plus the demonstration given before themeeting. If there is a demostration theystart at noon and then we go into themeeting at 2:00 PM.

The June meeting really isn't a meeting. Itis a garage sale and the annual picnic. The co-op brings the hamburgers andhot dogs and the members bring the rest.

The potluck is whatever youwant to bring. I bring macaronisalad every year. We, May andmyself (a committee of two), getto judge which dessert is thebest. We like to have everyonewho brings a dessert bring therecipe, so Bob can publish it. Ifyou make something unusualbring that recipe too. One yearwe got the recipe for watermelonsalsa. It was great.

By the way I am the photogra-pher so when you see a blonderunning around you better smile

because I take pictures of everyone.

If you have a project that you would liketo show off bring it because I take pic-tures of them and Bob puts them in theRawHide Gazette.

Two-Color DeerSkin Checker Bag

I stumbled across some antique brassmeasuring weights last weekend andthought they might make a nice checkerset.

One set of two ounce and one set of oneounces weights for the leather checker-board.

Using two different colors of deer skin, Isewed up a simple leather bag with brasscolored eyelets for the draw string. Thisbag keeps both my leather checkers andmy new found brass checkers.

Product Alert:I happened to pick up the plastic glue pot we've gotten from the WoodworkersStore in South Seattle, off Michigan, and it spilled on my workbench, out from theseams at the bottom! Fortunately, it only ruined a shirt and spilled over onto thework table, before I was able to get paper towels under it. Appears that the solvent,TOLUENE, in the Barge Contact Cement, ate right through plastic seams. Haven'thad a chance to take it back to the store to ask them about it. But, figured any of youwho have one better check it out.

Textured LeatherWalletsKen Imus continues to amaze us. Heshowed a couple textured leather walletsthis month that are absolutely beautiful. The finish he put on the leather aftertexturing gave such depth that it lookedlike finished wood grain to me.

Ken ran across this technique in an ar-ticle titled Textured Leather from Throw-away Scraps by Gail Russell, page 13,The Leather Craftsman, November 1985.

Take a piece ofvegetable tannedleather that hasflaws making it un-suitable for carv-ing.

Trace the outlineon a piece of glasswith a wax (grease?)pencil or scratch iton wax paper. Turnthe glass over sothe damp leatherdoes not contactthe tracing.

Moisten both sideswith a sponge andallow it to return al-most to its natural color. Leather that istoo moist will not hold the creases. Wadthe damp leather into a ball pressing hardto insure good firm creases. Unfold thepiece and place it onto your working area.

Use the tracing to stretch the leather backto its original shape. Weight down thecorners and let it dry.

The article says to use a block dyeingtechnique. Wrap a clean lint free clotharound a sponge and apply the dye to it.Blot all excess dye onto a paper towel.Using brisk, circular motions, rub thedye onto the leather piece. When theapplication has dried thoroughly, itshould be finished with FiebingsLeather Balm with atom wax. This willsoften the piece and imparts a high-gloss

finish. Finally buff the piece with a cleancloth or electric polisher.

Ken wet his leather, scrunched andtwisted it into a ball, bound it up withrubber bands and let it dry beforestretched it out flat. Then he used an-tique dye. He applied a couple coats ofNeat Lac for the finish. Neat Lac is greatfor getting depth to the leather.

The results are fabulous. Lighter 1-2 oz.leather will work easier than 4-5oz., ac-cording to Ken, who showed us both.Remember this is the same Ken Imus thatgot us going on the batik dyeing tech-

nique a couple months ago. Thanks forsharing Ken!

Harry Smith

HarrysHappeningsThe April meeting at MacPhersonsLeather was great! I did not get a counton the attendance, because every onewas wandering around the retail leatherarea buying stuff.

Woody opened the meeting with a re-minder about the Churchill Award nomi-nation forms. They are due by April 30.By the time you read this it will be too late

to nominate anyone this year.

Then he brought up Robb Barrs un-timely death, and turned the floor over toLen Madison. Len returned the depositsfor Robbs workshop that we had sched-uled for April 19th through the 21st. Hesaid he was on his way to Riverside togive the money to Robb when he learnedthe trip would not be necessary. He saidRobbs host told him that Robb lookedgray and ashen all day at the class andhad fallen asleep a number of times whilehe was teaching. I believe that goingquickly in your sleep is a good omen. Ican hear Bill Churchill telling Robb thathis work is great, but here are a couplethings he could do to improve it!

Woody announced Paula MarquisBookbinding Workshop is on June 8.Paula went over the tools necessary forthe class. We need to bring either a greasepencil or silver pen for marking theleather. We will also need some linenthread. A suggestion was made that thesetype markers and threads are available atsewing notions stores.

There were a couple spaces left for Paulasworkshop, but were immediately filled. Ifyou want to take the class, let Woodyknow. He twisted Paulas arm and shecommitted to another class perhaps inthe fall.

Len has lined up some other instructorsfor a three-day or possibly two-weekendworkshop. He suggested a dream teamtype deal, but it was awfully expensive. He has three possibilities, Joe Barth, BobBeard, and Peter Main, that are inter-ested in coming and doing the two week-ends deal. I think spending a week onOrcas Island caught their attention!

This workshop will be in the $200 range.A chance to learn from any of these guysis worth it. I know I will be there, if Lencan work it out. Watch for more informa-tion!

Then Len told us that Jim Linnell ofTandy Leather is looking for some one torun a Tandy Store in the greater Seattlearea! What a thing to do while we were

in MacPhersons! When he realized whathe was saying, he quickly went to a whis-per.

Woody again told us that June would behis last meeting. Dale Buckenberger willtake over Woodys duties. Dale alsoshowed us the Churchill Award Medal-lion. It is a great design! Bills daughtersand possibly his wife will be on handwhen we award the first one at the Junemeeting, BBQ, and flea market.

Tiny informed us that the Issaquah Se-nior Center is available for us to holdour meeting. With Woody gone, we willneed another location. So keep an eyeout. Thanks to Tiny, we have at least onealternate spot.

Terry Durbin took the floor. Terry is inhis twelfth year as MacPhersons man-ager. He still has not fully recovered fromthe accident he was involved in last fall, but is putting in half days.

MacPhersons is a family owned busi-ness. They have stores in Portland, Or-egon with a small satellite store in Eu-gene, Billings, Montana, and Seattle, each run by a brother. Greg runs theSeattle store. They are active with com-munity projects and are especially grate-ful for our patronage.

Terry gave us a very informative over-view on recent events affecting leatherprices. The mad cow disease and hoofand mouth caused an increase in prices. He stopped buying so he could hold theline. He still has not raised prices.MacPhersons policy is to provide only

top quality leather for all its customers. He endorses single hide sales. They cantcut hides because it makes them manu-facturers rather than wholesalers, so fullhides and sides are all they sell if the

leather is not in a kit. Of course theyhave a full line of belt blanks and are nowproviding kangaroo lace in hanks. I con-verted the 10-meter lengths into feet andcompared prices. They are very favor-able to spools of lace. The samples hepassed around were excellent quality.

Since being with MacPhersons, he hasenlarged the retail space to 4,000 squarefeet and increased the hardware inven-tory $20,000. He now stocks a full line ofAl Stohlman publications, and showedus two new Sheridan Style books that hesold out to our members. The stampingtools available looked about double whatthey used to carry, and, hold on to yourwallets, he has a full line of Barry Kingtools. These babies are worth the money!

Paula recommended a clicking knife witha French curve blade. Terry will havetwo dozen available by her class date.Lets scoop them up. It is the only utility

knife I use, for whatever that is worth!

If you want to order by computer, contact Terry at:

[email protected]

...and let him know you are a PSLACMember. He will make sure you get thebest service. Remember to bring yourmembership card with you when youvisit. Thats the only way to get the dis-count. Apparently, some unscrupulouspeople are taking advantage of our dis-count. Also, check out the tools youbuy. The Nordstrom wear it once to theProm and return it scam stung Terry. Itappears that people were buying tools, using them once and returning them, butTerry has put a stop to that.

I always take my coin magnifying glasswhen I buy tools to check out the work-ing face. It is surprising how much differ-ence there is between tools.

We had several projects brought in forshow and tell. Two were tributes to RobbBarr. Ken Imus did the Indian MedicineMan over a wolf. It is excellent. JackieHolliday brought in her practice moose, and her final work took a third place rib-bon at the Pitt Pounders show. This is an

IFOLG show, so Jackie is now an Interna-tional ribbon holder. Congratulations andthanks for showing us the practice piece, which looked pretty finished to me.

Ken also had those wallets with the un-usual textured finish and you can readabout them elsewhere in this edition.Jackie also brought a piece that is a testof Tambo Pens. What coloring! Thisproject will end up a purse that I can notwait to see. Paula Marquis had a beauti-fully done coin purse with a Celtic designand flawless braid. She also had somecoasters which were made from that tieddyed leather and were really eye catch-ing. She also had three examples of thebooks we are going to do at her class onJune 8. One was covered with the tiedyed leather she brought to an earliermeeting. Phil ONeill showed a horsewith attached bells for hanging on a door,a horseshoe coaster, a latte holster, and aset of coasters in a holder. These coast-ers were finished with Varathane. Paulareminded us to use the water-based ver-sion. Apparently Phil had a bad experi-ence with the other stuff. Woody showeda key holder with fobs, and his new toolbox. He got the box at Lowes, a localhardware store, then made leather panelsto fill in the sides and top. He invertedthe inside tray and lined it with leather toprotect the tools, which were in a blockof wood made by his son who drilled theholes for him. It came out very nice. Ibrought in a CD case made from aHidecrafter Leather pattern. Dusty tookso many pictures of it; you can readabout it in a separate article.

Woody did a Cub Scout demo in NorthBend, and Phil ONeill showed some Cubshow to do it right a couple weeks ago.

Dave Jensen and I had eleven Cubs fromDen 307 in Federal Way attend our demoon April 19.

I guess I got pretty wordy this month.Jeff Bement will give a workshop onSheridan Style carving at the May meet-ing. He is going to start at 12:00 noon.

June 8th is an all day Jamboree at FlamingGeyser Park. There will probably be about40 to 50 Scouts coming through our sta-tion. It is the same day as our Bookbind-ing class. So, if you can help out, con-tact Woody. It is supposed to run fromabout 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

Leather CD CaseThose marketing geniuses at HidecrafterLeather sent me an unsolicited patternfor this CD case in a package with sometools and supplies I ordered. I wanted tomake something for my oldest son, andhe thought he could use a case for hisCDs much more than another belt orwallet!

I rounded up the dimensions to 6 x 6for the front and 6 x 9 for the back andflap. I cut a square piece of leather 6 x15, but if I was smart I would haveadded 2 more for the connector. I cutthe connector, 2 closer tabs and thecloser loop all from contiguous piecesfor uniformity.

Using contact shelf paper for backing asJeff Bement suggested, I cut, carved, andstamped the front. The Victorian designis a free pattern from a woodworking site.I stamped the closer tab pattern, stripedoff the backing and glued it to the othertab.

Then I punched in the closer loop holes, edged and skived the closer loop, and

glued it in place after forming it aroundthe closer tab. I glued in the liner, provid-ing more support to the closer tab.

I stamped the basket weave pattern onthe back, stripped off the contact paperand glued in the lining. Be sure to foldthe flap to at least 90 degrees or else thelining will bunch up when the case isclosed.

I then trimmed the linings to form a goodedge and glued in the pockets. They

should be about 3/8 short of 6 on oneside to allow for sewing in the connector.I had to dry assemble the pieces to makesure I did not glue down the wrong endsof the pockets.

I stamped the connector design. Then Iput two coats of neatsfoot oil on all theparts to replace the oils lost from casingthe leather and allowed them to cure over-night.

I put a Super Shene resist on the Victo-rian design, and used mahogany antique

stain on all the stamped pieces. Afterbuffing off the excess stain, I coated thestain with a light coat of Super Shene.

I grooved the sewing channels and gluedin the connector to the front piece. I posi-tioned and glued the closer tab in place. After sewing the tab in place, I stitchedthe rest of the front, glued the connectorto the back and stitched the back.

I just finished up to this stag an couplehours before the meeting.

After getting home, Isanded, slicked, andedge coated all theedges. For the finish,I used two coats ofFiebings AussieLeather Conditioner.Combined with theneatsfoot oil, this fin-ish has made the casevery supple so itcloses nicely. I alwaysbuff each coat withlambs wool to workthe finish into theleather. As a finaltouch, I branded mysons initials into thecloser loop.

Next time I will put thefinish on before as-sembling the closertab loop. The dying inthis area is a bit messy.

I used Hidecraftertools since it is theirpattern. The basket

weave, PX001, worked really well. Al-though I need to practice matting, theirpebble matting series PA005, PA004, andPA003, did a good job for me.

I have the pattern if anyone wants a copy.I do not think Hidecrafters will object. There is no copyright or trademark on it.Oh, I got the CD inserts from them also.

It was a very satisfying project, and canbe finished in a weekend.
