‘let us shine’

Raising Achievement at Cockshut Hill for Year Eleven

On the 14th January we celebrated with our Year 11 students as they collected their Pre-Public Examination (Mock) results in a specially organised event. The atmosphere was very positive and we are incredibly proud of how mature our students were in assessing their results and discussing next steps with their peers and staff.

Although there were naturally some disappointments, these examinations enable both students and staff to plan for the coming 12 term-time weeks until the Summer exam season begins. In addition, we also have a range of revision and catch up sessions planned for after school and in the February and Easter holidays. Timetables for these will be posted in coming weeks.

We have every confidence that our Year 11 students will work hard to achieve the results they deserve.

So Far:Revision classes have started and we have seen excellent attendance at some, including Law and History, so a massive well done. Others however, have seen poor attendance where there was one student – Please encourage attendance.

Big Teach- We have run a series of Maths and Science Big Teach sessions where students have been taught and revised key exam criteria. We have seen the impact of these back in normal lessons. These will change slightly as we evaluate and improve them to meet the students needs.

Next Pre Public exam dates:

2nd March - 6th March. This is a great opportunity for your child to shine just before the ‘real’ exams start. Hopefully boosting confidence in their ability to succeed.

Walking Talking Mocks: 23rd March – This week provides the students with an opportunity to go through past papers with their teachers in an exam environment it is used as a settling and confidence boosting tool and helps maximise grades.

Passport to Prom will be launched- 23rd February

On 3rd July 2015 your Prom will take place. This is an IMMENSE event which celebrates your years at Cockshut Hill and marks the step on to the next part of your journey as a young adult! We will be there to celebrate with you.

However, will you actually be there? To get to the Prom you must:

• Have a positive attitude to learning• Be ‘on target’ in your subjects• Have the desire to work towards this goal• Completed all your coursework• Excellent attendance• Excellent behaviour• Complete the ‘Passport to the Prom’ booklet

1. Encourage attendance of half term classes.

2. Ask your child how it is going in regards to revision – Have they started?

3. Check your child’s revision timetable is it up in place and is it being used.

What you can do as a parent this fortnight...

What should we do as students this fortnight ...

1. From the Mock Results have a plan for each subject.

2. Attend a minimum of 3 sessions

a week.

3. Begin to adapt and IMPROVE you revision methods based on feedback from your Mock exams.

Remember!1. Read the question carefully; is it asking you to ‘Explain’, ‘Describe’, ‘Prioritise’, ‘Assess’?2. If there is a source then use it, make sure you make a point and then use a relevant part of the

source to support that point.3. EDEXCEL will give you some bullet points for some questions; use them! They will act as a

trigger for your memory; they put them there for a reason...to help you.4. Remember in general we are talking one mark for every minute. Make the time count! 4 marks

is 4 minutes. If you struggle with this then tackle the 16 mark questions first...you can answer the questions in any order you like!

5. This is your chance to SHOW OFF, the examiner is not trying to trip you up, and they want to give you every opportunity to get as many marks as you can. Make the last two years count!

QUICK TIPS FOR REVISING• Make yourself start however much you don't want to, that’s the hardest bit over with.• Built in short breaks• Do frequent short exercises, stretches, neck and shoulder rolls, walking around etc.• Drink water and get fresh air. Keep the temperature cool.• Eat brain food, avoid sugar and have lots of healthy snacks around to eat little and often.• Take a day off and do something completely different.• Don't leave the difficult bits to the end.• Do something relaxing between revising and bedtime.• Stop and take a break if you start feeling frustrated, angry or overwhelmed. Make a note of the problem to

take to your next lesson and move on to something else.• Focus on what you have done, not all the things that you haven't - every little helps.• Promise yourself little rewards after each session - a favourite TV programme, reading a trashy novel or

going out with friends.• At the end of each session file away your notes and clutter so that your work-area is clear for the next

session.
