Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, District 9455 Page 1 Speaker Barbara Wall Meeting 18 th January First meeting for 2012 was attended by a number of visitors who specifically came along to hear MLC ‘old girl’ Barbara Wall talk about Interplast from a non medical view point. When visiting the RCFB 2 ½ years ago, Barbara heard PP Steve Weychan from the RC Kenwick talk about ‘Climb for a Smile’. This was the first she had heard of this Rotary project, was totally caught up by his enthusiasm, returned to her Club in the Blue Mountains in D. 9690 and set about raising in excess of $40,000 to fund an Interplast Team. Barbara has now been on two Interplast Teams, the last was a specialised team specifically to treat burns victims which went to Fiji. A slide presentation was shown of just four patients and their ‘miracle’ transformations at the hands of the skilled volunteer plastic surgeons and nurses. She is now District Chair of Interplast and is looking forward to presenting the Interplast story to all the Clubs in her District. Barbara was introduced and thanked by two of our members who are well experienced with the Interplast project – Rob Pearce and Ken Collins. A sincere thanks Barb for your passion and commitment to Interplast and may those who benefit from your drive and enthusiasm enjoy a fuller and more fruitful life. Visitors last meeting were former Peace Scholar Susa Carew, former member Enid Wall, Wong and Joyce Lee, Claudia Renner, Sabine Erika, Myra Hutton, Sally Lamey, Loee Chenery, Toni Mahoney, Jan Mapley and Wendy Wardell. It was a delight to have all of you with us. Next Week’s Meeting Our speaker next week will be 2011 Rostrum’s WA Speaker of the Year, Wendy Wardell. It will be a change of pace for members, and unfortunately, a number will be away as some are still travelling and the City of Nedlands Naturalisation Ceremony is on at the same time as the Rotary meeting, which will also take members away from the Club.

Welcome to Leonie Still and Bob Nicholson

Leonie Still was officially inducted last Wednesday, A. Professor from UWA, Leonie has the time to now become involved with Rotary. Hon. member Bob and Lynne Nicholson. A huge thank you to both couples. Anuradha, CNN’s Woman of the year in 2010, is coming to Perth in early March for International Woman’s Day. Whilst she is here she will speak at the RCFB on 7th March to hopefully, a large number, so would all members please commence inviting as many as you can to attend on that night. Gillian and her committee are working on a large fundraiser , which Gillian would like all members to support.

National Youth Science Forum

The NYSF has been held in Perth over the past two weeks, attended by 144 of Australia’s top science students commencing Year 12 this year. Our members the Marshalls, Carot Collins and Collins all hosted students last Sunday and attended the dinner on Friday, 13th in a very hot and humid Currie Hall. Students hosted by Carina and Luke were Matisee and George, Simone and Marcos hosted Cameron and Ryan whilst Ken and Di had Caitlin, Taylor and Shanthi. It was Carina’s first exposure with the NYSF, which she enjoyed and has expressed interest to Greg Thurston, the District Chairman, that she would like to become more involved with the project next year. The speaker at the dinner was Adjunct Prof. Dr. Michael McCarthy, Curator, Dept of Maritime Archaeology, WA Museum & School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Notre Dame. Michael, a former teacher had a passion for ship wrecks. He was able to turn that passion into his job and by gathering a team of experts around him, they have discovered countless shipwrecks around the globe.

Whilst all present heard a fascinating story, along with interesting slides, his most valuable message to the students was to ‘follow your passion’.

New Generations Committee

Under the Directorship of Hamish Mackie, January is an extremely busy time for the New Generations Committee. The NYSF has been happening, RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Camp) will commence at Bickley Campsite on 28th January for a week. Stuart James has been

sponsored by the Club to participate. There is a dinner on 2nd February which some members will attend. The Science Experience to which the club has sponsored five students from Christ Church Grammar will also be taking place. Newman College has advised that it wishes to have a further 200 Yr 11 students participate in RYDA in 2012. With the commencement of the new school year, Interact will be recommencing under the Presidency of Kathleen

Elliott. Hamish would welcome members interested in serving on the very rewarding New Generations committee to join him on the committee. He needs assistance badly and would like a few volunteers, otherwise members will have to be coopted to the committee.

Club Service Committee

Gillian Yudelman has just taken over as Chairman of the Club Service Committee. In the very near future she will be sending out a questionnaire to all members requesting feedback on all aspects of the Club, including your input on fundraising and social activities. There is an urgent need to proceed with a fundraiser as quickly as possible. With assistance from Mignon Shardlow, Gordon Hay is looking into a film night in the coming month or so.

Community/Vocational Director

Gordon Hay, a very new but enthusiastic Rotarian, has taken over early as the Director of Community and Vocational Service. He will be contacting all members of the Club who are not on the International or New Generations Committees very

soon as he is keen to move the activities of this committee along Please attend Committee meetings as this is where the real work of Rotary takes place.

January

In the Rotary calendar January is Rotary Awareness month. It’s up to each member to talk about and promote the work of Rotary. It is still a well kept secret, which needs spreading if suitable people are to be encouraged to join Rotary in its work to create a better world.

Rotary Theme for 2012-13

‘Peace Through Service’ is the theme that RIP 2012-13 Sakuji Tanaka has chosen for his year as International President. Sakuji has decided to make ‘Peace’ his emphasis next year and will be holding three Presidential Peace Conferences during that time.

International Convention Bangkok

The International Convention is being held 6-9th May in Bangkok, Thailand. Speakers already firmed up are a former Rotary Peace Fellow Amanda Martin who is working as a public health curriculum coordinator and teacher in a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Along with Amanda, Nobel Peace Prize winner Mahammad Yunus who started the Grameen (Village) Bank to assist desperately poor women in developing countries to set up small businesses and Hugh Evans, Young Australian of the Year in 2004 and cofounder and CEO of the Global Poverty Project will both be on the program on Monday 7th May.

District 9455 Conference Geraldton

The District 9455 Conference will be held in Geraldton 20-22nd April. Tristan Kolay M 0412 732329 E. [email protected] is coordinating a display of laminated posters of projects from the clubs throughout the District. All clubs are being encouraged to participate.

Scoop Special from District PR Chair PDG Ian Murray

Rotary International is celebrating the birthday of Rotary on February 23rd. What is your club doing to celebrate the 107th birthday of our great organisation? Celebrate ROTARY together. Some suggestions include:

Holding a birthday party in the week of the 23rd. Make it a gala event.

Have a ‘cut the cake’ ceremony

Invite a great ROTARY speaker to talk on a great Rotary program. Inform your members of the fantastic opportunities and programs that there are in Roary.

In the Rotary calendar Rotary’s birthday is World Understanding and Peace Day. Invite a speaker to address the Club on ‘Peace’.

Make a press/media release outlining some of your great projects. Tell your Club story.

Start a new project in the name of Rotary’s Birthday. Make an announcement.

clowning in 20 countries, clowning on streets, hospitals and in schools. Susan has an amazing project for Peace she would like Rotary to bring to fruition. RIPE Sakuji Tanaka’s theme of Peace Though Service fits perfectly into Susan’s project. Visit her website www.worldpeacefull.com

Update on Members

A number of members are currently travelling or leave next week for overseas. Good to have Rob Pearce back on his feet (so to speak) and with us. Rob spent two weeks, including Christmas in St John’s Subi with back problems. Ken Collins took a taxi straight to the NYSF dinner last Friday from St John’s Subi where he had undergone a couple of procedures.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

A very Happy Anniversary to Jim and Meryl Gould for 21st January. No birthdays for a couple of weeks. The 19th December was the third birthday of the RC Freshwater Bay and it was also Gillian Yudelman’s birthday on 22nd. There were 63 present at the function on Thursday ( members, spouses, Interactors, potential members, friends and guests). Although predominantly a social event, much loved former actor Faith Richardson (nee Clayton) gave a lighted hearted presentation, using her acting skills to bring in various accents, in an entertaining presentation of stories and ditties. All in attendance enjoyed Faith’s sense of humour and ditties, along with great fellowship in a relaxed atmosphere, bringing a change of pace from our usual ‘business’ style meeting. A sincere thanks to Faith and her daughter June for attending our Christmas function and your time and talent with your address Faith. It was appreciated by all.
