We in Rotary aspire to great deeds. We admirethose who gave great gifts to humanity: Abra-ham Lincoln, who gave the gift of human dignityto the downtrodden; Mother Teresa, who gavethe gift of compassion to the forgotten; MahatmaGandhi, who gave the gift of peaceful change tothe oppressed. Their very lives became gifts tothe world.

We can be inspired by their example. We canbe inspired to ask, how can I, in the life that Ilive  – without neglecting the responsibilities that

e so dear to me – how can I, too, become a gift to the world? As Insidered my theme, I thought of the lessons I have learned throughy Hindu faith. I thought especially of the story of Sudama.

dama was a poor child and a bosom friend of Krishna, who was borna royal lineage as an avatar – an incarnation of the divine. As the twoys grow up, they drift apart, and while Krishna becomes a military

ader and king of great repute, Sudama remains a humble villager.e years go by and Sudama's poverty deepens. Finally, he lacks even

od to feed his children. His wife reminds him of his childhood friend-p with Krishna: Perhaps it is time to go to the mighty ruler for help.luctantly, Sudama agrees, but resolves that he will not go empty-nded. He gathers together a few handfuls of rice – all the food his

mily has left – and wraps them in a piece of cloth as a gift for hisend.

hen Sudama enters the palace, he is overwhelmed by the grandeurd by Krishna's gracious welcome. His meager gift, so carefully pre-red, seems a humiliating reminder of his poverty. Krishna embracesdama, who hides the hand holding the rice behind his back. Krishnaks what he is holding.

r from being disdainful, Krishna accepts the rice with gratitude andnsumes it with joy as the two sit and talk together. Hours pass, during

ich the pleasures of their rekindled friendship push all thoughts of hissperate plight from Sudama's mind. When evening falls, Sudama setst for home – and only then realizes that he has neglected his task. Hereturning with nothing, and Krishna has eaten his family's last grainsrice.

dama steels himself to return to his hungry children. But standingfore his gate, as dawn begins to break, he sees that the hut he leftsterday has become a stately home, and waiting to greet him is his

wn family: well-dressed, and well-fed by the baskets of food that ap-ared in their kitchen as Krishna ate each grain of Sudama's rice.

shna understood what Sudama had brought him: everything he hadgive. In return, Krishna gave him everything he needed. It is never theaterial value of a gift that matters – it is the love that comes with it.st as Sudama's gift to Krishna became a gift to Sudama, what we give

ough Rotary becomes a gift to us. And we all have a choice: whetherkeep our gifts to ourselves or give them to others, and Be a Gift to theorld .

e have only one chance at our lives. And we will have only oneance at this new Rotary year. This is our time. Let us grasp it. LetBe a Gift to the World .

    Foundation Chairman’s July 2015 Messag

The Future Vision Plan was devoped to remedy some weaknessin our Rotary Foundation's pro-grams, one of which was the Fo

dation's slowness in handling apcations for Matching Grants. As result, the Future Vision Plansought to simplify the Foundatioprograms, to give Rotarians mor

voice and ownership in these programs, and to reduce the time required for the processing of humatarian grants. In 2010-11, the Future Vision Plan started with 10pilot districts. The full launch of the plan for all Rodistricts was achieved in 2013-14. Rotary uses a

three-year cycle for the implementation and testinof its new programs, and as a result, the first comprehensive evaluation of the full launch will occur the third year – which is now this year!

A full and fair evaluation of the Future Vision Plannow referred to as the new grants model, is the mimportant task of the year for me and the other Trtees. I encourage you to take advantage of the vaous surveys and polls that will be conducted in thenext few months to test the effectiveness of the n

Foundation programs. Comments from Rotarianswere solicited earlier for consideration by a commtee of past presidents, chaired by Bill Boyd, and tcomments received were a good prelude to the mformal part of the evaluation process now underw

I am committed to a thorough evaluation of the negrants model, and the Programs Committee, whicmanaging the evaluation process, is truly interestin the level of our customer satisfaction with the ngrants model. And, of course, that is why you are

critical to our assessment, because it is the Rotarans of the world who are our Foundation's customers!

    ROTARY CLUB OF HOLY SPIRIT

    Rotary International District 3780

After its first ten years, what set the Rotary Club ofHoly Spirit apart from other Rotary clubs?

Holy Spirit has joined the small circle of elite clubs in the Philip-pines entrusted with Global Grants to support large serviceprojects. - Words of Francis Rivera, DG RY 2013-14.

Holy Spirit is one of 200 Rotary clubs in the world, and the onlyone in District 3780, participating in the 6-year RI researchproject on Associate Membership, one of four on-going re-search streams that could have profound impact on Rotary af-ter 2017. RI Director Guiller Tumangan notes, “Your participa-tion as a pilot club for Associate Membership is a significantmilestone not only for your club and District 3780 but also for

the country and Zones 7 and 8.”

Increasingly, our portfolio of activities includes capacity build-ing, knowledge sharing and technology-transfer to multiply Ro-tary’s ability to serve more beneficiaries. Examples of these ini-tiatives are shown in this publication.

The now iconic THE DOVE, newsletter of Holy Spirit, has re-invented the way the old, paradigm-shackled club bulletin isdesigned, written and distributed. THE DOVE, a modern dayRotary newsletter, is easy to create, is reader-friendly, is web-linked, and saves trees as it eliminates the need for trash bins.
