Holy Spirit responds quickly to help alleviate hunger among flood

victims sheltered at the Bagong Silanganevacuation center on Aug

A day after continuous heavy rains and floodsspawned by the southwest monsoon sentthousands to higher ground and evacuationcenters on August 7, 2012, RC Holy Spirit mo-

bilized its members to help flood victims.

In the morning of August 8, 2012, bottled wa-ter, biscuits and bananas were ready for distri-bution to flood victims. Seeing that the evacu-ees at the temporary shelters provided by BgyHoly Spirit had already gone back to theirhomes, President Marcia Salvador proceededto Bagong Silangan Elementary School in aneighboringbarangay where some 400 fami-lies had sought refuge from the disaster. To-gether with Bgy Holy Spirit Kagawads Joel La-garto and Emma Espino, they were met by theschools principal, Mr Jun Honrejas, who along

with the kagawads from Bgy Bagong Silanganhelped distribute the food and water to about

    200 evacuees.

    number (about 600 plus families).

The donation of bottled water, large tin cans of

biscuits and bananas for 200 evacuees camefrom Holy Spirit Rtn Marites Nepomuceno and

    Pres Marcia.

Holy Spirit and 6 partner clubs hold youth forum to help achieve

ZERO new incidence of drug-abuse and HIV/AIDS in Quezon City

The Rotary Club of Holy Spirit D3780 is the only club in our District, one of only four in the Philippines, and of only 200 clubs of the worlds 34,100 Rotary clubs, chosen by Rotary International to participate in the 3 -associate members pilot project that ends in RY 2013-14. RC Holy Spirit D3780 with the Rotaract & InteractClubs of Holy Spirit organized and sponsored the 2ndannual youth forum on Anti-Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDSPrevention last October 28, 2012 in cooperation with

    the Quezon City Red Cross.

The forum was attended by some 70 Rotaractors and

Interactors, as well as by 17 Rotarians and guests. Thevery serious topics were ably presented by the young, competent Red Cross facilitators (called peer instruc-tors) Mr Ruben Claravall, Jr and Ms Persian Rica Bang-gad who spiced up the forum with fun exercises thatevoked laughter and thought not only from the young

attendees, but the Rotarians present as well.

The outcome desired from the forum is to help achieveZERO new incidence of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS

affliction among the youth in Quezon City.

Given the alarming rise of HIV infections in the country, the topics on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse are especiallyrelevant. Per the latest data from the DOH(Department of Health), the number of cases for theperiod January-August 2012 has risen to 2,150 (118 ofwhich have progressed into AIDS). In 2011, a total of2,349 cases of HIV/AIDS was recorded. The DOH ismore alarmed due to the increasing number of inject-

ing drug users who contracted the infection.

Our heartfelt thanks to RCs Camp Aguinaldo, LoyolaHeights, New Manila East, Pag-asa, SFDM and Timogwho co-hosted this important event. And to the otherclubs who also share our commitment to help attainZERO new incidence of the dreaded afflictions in Que-zon City by sponsoring their Interactors and Rotaractors

    to the forum..

In the discussions on dangerous drugs, the resource

    persons spoke on -

    Top substances being used: Shabu; Marijuana;

    Corex-DM (Cough/Cold Medicine); and Rugby

Proven ways to prevent drug abuse:

DONT TRY, DONT TASTE, DONT STA Close family ties

    Choose your friends

    Community service projects

    Community vigilance & information

The points emphasized in the HIV-AIDS session:

HIV is a virus that infects people by getting instheir blood cells. To avoid getting HIV, a personmust prevent the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk of someone who is infected from etering the body through anatomical openings i

cluding mouth or breaks in ones skin.

The resource persons reminded the youth and

grown-ups of the time-tested ABCDEFGH rule: Abstain from sex Be faithful to your partner Correct use of condoms Do not use illegal drugs Educate yourself Frequent voluntary testing Guidance and counselling Healthy lifestyle

AIDS sickness due to HIV virus is fatal for whic

    cure has yet been developed.

In closing the forum, Holy Spirit President Marcia Sdor urged the attendees to share what theyve lear

with their relatives, friends and schoolmates to hel

    attain ZERO new incidence!
