Primary RC Contact (PRCC)

The internal champion of a regatta or regatta series.

May also be a PRO, RO and/or Primary Drafter for the same event – but not required to be.

• Starts with assisting the documents process, identifying special needs for the regatta, getting volunteers involved and excited for the event.

• Continues with making sure volunteers have what they need to be successful, managing race-day changes and collecting feedback at the end of the race-day.

• Ends with making sure Race Committee chair has a summary of the regatta, race day or series – how many races, any RC issues or triumphs. Make note of what worked and what needs to changed for next year’s PRCC.

• Annual series for Olympic sailing. • Open to the sailing events chosen for the 2016

Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competition.

• 2015 ISAF Sailing World CupMelbourne – 7-14 December 2014Miami – 25-31 January 2015Hyères – 20-26 April 2015Weymouth and Portland – 8-14 June 2015Qingdao – 14-20 September 20152015 Final Abu Dhabi – 27 October to 1 November 2015 (top 20 from each event)


What does that have to do with CYC?

To constantly improve our Race Management skills we all need experience and practice.

This is a chance to do something different, at the international level


How to get invited?

Janet would say that it is the old boy’s network, and happily, she is part of that.• Janet got Olof in last year and also Skip Ryan

from Tampa. • Lynn Lynch was invited by either CYC or Tom

Duggan. • Jay has been working another course for

several years with Jim Tichenor• Vicki Matthews is also a long timer on the

Paralympic course. Erik has worked there, too


So how to get invited back?

• Be nice, willing to do whatever needed

• Help with the equipment, boats, etc.• Be on time, or married to the CRO• Skills and physical strength

• Bring a boat, or two!

Tips & Tricks from Janet, Laser PIN boat

• For short lines and gates- skip the GPS, it responds too slowly, less than 400 feet (medal races -10 boats)

• Let Lynn drive when it needs to be done fast

• Use the tape recorder religiously, talk out every start from before the penalty period

• Bring extra radios – we used 2 spares


Redress

OCS-• Listen to the tapes from both ends

• If ambiguous or incorrect, go to the room and get it fixed

• If one or more tapes are clear, find the sailor and play the tapes. It usually ends there

Finishes• If you miss finishes, post your best

guess and let the judges sort it out


L Flag Ashore

With sound, every time posting amendment• There were many amendments, some

very long that applied to only some classes

• Schedule changes• Very difficult to find the current

amendment, on the board or online• Could list them by date


L Flag on the Water

• Usually the second start of a pair sails an I course, but to get the next set started quickly, Tom decided to send the second set on another outer.

• He put up the L Flag and made certain that every single boat sailed by to look at the board and get the new course.

• This took a few minutes, but there were no problems.


L Flag, continued

The next day on another course, same scenario but no L Flag. About 30 boats sailed the wrong course.

Redress?

No, so those boats withdrew, realizing they had made a mistake

But was it a good race?

YOU don’t need to go out and get this stuff right away, but start accumulating.


5 big things I learned

Paint the pole holding the line flag Orange!

Set the gates (approximately) you can always move them while the fleet is going upwind.

Embrace the Banana!If the wind is 55 degrees at the

weather mark, but you have 45 degrees at the start. Set your line for 45 and leg for 55 degrees… Yes it looks like a banana!


5 things:

Use/Create a course length chart, but don’t live and die by it!



5 Things:

Talk to the sailors, after racing!Walk the dinghy park, docks, on

your way to the jury! Chat with sailors, avoid the bar (sailors get a little loose and there is a good chance you will not get the info you want/need).


Finally! Know your flags and what they do!
