Challenge SUMMER READING
Through AUGUST 13
m y R C P L . c o m
from our director
2 | july + august 2011
Dear Friends,
Right up there with my love for books, is my
passion for music. I don’t have to look very far
up my family tree to know where that love came
from. Some of my fondest memories of my father
are of him, kicked back on the couch with those
super-sized headphones on, eyes closed, hands
waving in the air, with a smile on his face. He
could be listening to anything from Beethoven
to Fleetwood Mac but I knew he was a million
miles away. My dad also had a one of those
wonderfully smooth, rafter-shaking voices that as
pre-teen, made me want to crawl under the pew
on Sundays. Folks knew when my family skipped
church, that’s for sure. My adolescent embarrass-
ment gave way to wonderful sense of pride and
appreciation. As I grew older, I realized just how
much my dad shaped my own deep and broad appreciation for music and how my own
musical talent was inherited. Our shared passion helped us connect in special way.
I still have that same love and excitement for discovering, listening to and sharing music
with others. I feel so fortunate to work in a place where music is as celebrated as books;
where such a wide variety of music is available to explore. And now we are going to make
it even easier for you to broaden your musical taste (and your own personal music
library) with a new service.
Music lover, meet Freegal: A music service that allows customers to download free
digital music that does not expire or disappear. Sound too good to be true? Visit
myRCPL.com/freegal and start exploring!
I hope you’ll use Freegal weekly. Why not sample an artist you’ve never heard before or
create the perfect summer playlist? It’s simple to use, free and you don’t have to “return”
the songs you download. They are yours to keep. I can’t think of a better incentive to kick
back, plug in those earbuds and relax. Enjoy!
Warmly,

Why did you choose to work in libraries?I was a librarian in a 4th grade play, and everything else
is history! I realized that I love connecting people to the
information they need and a bit of the entertainment
they want.
How does your job make this library better? While I only work at RCPL 7 hours a week, I try to make
those hours count! I get to do a bit of everything—from
helping a customer fill out a (confusing) job form to
cheerleading for the next great Young Adult read.
What is your most memorable library experience? My favorite times are when I am away from the library and
meet patrons “in the wild.” They always call me “The Library
Lady” and tell me about their great experiences at RCPL.
We’re Listening to Give you a Bigger and Better Library!
Take Your Library Anywhere!
Eastover Branch To Start Expansion this Summer
The Eastover Community is set to receive a bigger and better
library. A grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture covers a
substantial portion of the $1.1 million renovation and expansion of
the current Eastover Branch, which was opened in 1985. The expan-
sion will double the size and significantly increase the hours for
the Eastover Branch. During construction, the Eastover Branch
will operate in a temporary facility and all library services will
remain the same. Construction is set to begin in September.
Stay tuned for more information.

Library Launches Mobile Site for Smartphone Users.
Using a smartphone, customers can access the site by visiting the
catalog on myrcpl.com; the phone detects when a visitor is browsing
on a smartphone and automatically redirects the browser. The site is
designed to be compatible with mobile browsers found on Android,
BlackBerry and iPhone, offering visitors an optimal viewing and navi-
gation on their handheld devices. The mobile site features easy access
to the most popular links, including the library catalog and calendar of
events and contains fewer graphics, allowing for a quick page upload
on their device.
Save it to your favorites or download the Library Anywhere app from
the app store and take your library anywhere! To the grocery store, the
long drive to grandmas, in line at the bank – anywhere you are your

Leslie Tetreault | Children’s Room Manager
It was true over 25 years ago when I began my work as a children’s
librarian, and it is still true. If you read aloud to your children from
the moment they are born, chances are they will come to
reading easily.
Reading aloud to children develops the six skills education re-
searchers say they need to be good readers: a large vocabulary,
print awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness,
narrative skills and print motivation.
Sadly, almost 30% of the children entering school in Richland
County are not ready to learn to read. They do not have those
six skills.
Our library team is caring, knowledgeable and eager to suggest
the best books for your children. Take advantage of our passion and
knowledge. Let us help you find the best books for their interests
and age.
Read to your children every day. Bring them to your public
library this summer and join our Summer Reading Challenge. Let
the library staff help you and your children select books together,
and let them take home as many books as their hearts desire.
Open the door to future success for every child.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth
by Carrie Ryan
Imagine living in
a small village sur-
rounded by a fence.
It, along with The
Sisterhood, keeps you
safe from the Uncon-
secrated, the millions
of undead who roam the forest. But what
happens when the fence and The Sisterhood
fail and the undead come pouring in, threat-
ening your life? This is Mary’s world and, as it
falls apart, she fights to stay alive. She fights
to discover the truth. She believes that there
must be more to life than this fence and the
Unconsecrated who hunger for her. Is there?

eReady Your Library AnywhereSusan Lyon | RCPL’s eReady Librarian
A few weeks ago, I got stuck at my local car fix-it shop on a Saturday morning. It’s not the best time to get an oil change, but my car was long overdue. Wouldn’t you know it, I forgot to bring a book and I left the blasted newspaper in the car that was being hoisted up in the air to be drained of its slimy, dirty oil. For a few minutes, I joined the other inconvenienced customers in staring at the infomercial playing on the dinky TV while checking the clock every other second.
All of a sudden, I realized I had my smartphone and that I could check out a library eBook right then and there, hot dog. I downloaded the Dottie Frank novel I’d been meaning to start and suddenly I was de-livered from that smelly old waiting room to the marshes of Sullivan’s Island. Fumes of gas and oil were replaced by salt water breezes and the aroma of a low country boil. It truly is a wonderful thing to be able to take my library anywhere I go. Are you eReady?

Job Center Celebrates One Year
A grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation allowed RCPL to
expand access to computers at all locations by 106 percent and add the
Job Center at the Main Library in June of 2010. Before the Knight Grant
funding, the area had 14 public computers available. Today there are 48
computers that are used daily by library customers in the Job Center.
Since June of 2010, library staff members in the Job Center have
directly assisted more than 4,500 people in job searches. In just over
six months of 2010, RCPL computers were used nearly 33,000 times
for job-related tasks.
“There are many partners in workforce development
throughout Richland County,” said RCPL’s Executive
Director Melanie Huggins. “We are just excited to be
a part of the equation.”
