from our directorDear Friends,
This may sound odd coming from a librarian but when I talk about RCPL, I rarely mention the “b” word. You’re reading your library’s magazine, so I’m guessing you’re a fan of them. You may be about to check out a tote bag full of them right now. After all, a book is to the library as food is to the grocery store, right? But when I talk about what RCPL is and how we fulfill our mission to inspire, inform and entertain, I tell people that we’re in the learning business, not the book business. And it seems that the business of learning is more critical than ever.
I recently read an article in Fast Company that said the average American has been in their current job less than four years and would have 11 jobs in their lifetime. This is certainly a change from previous generations where it was common to work for one company in the same role for one’s entire career. How do we equip ourselves and our children for a world where flux and change are the standard? Where the rapid pace of change make it difficult to keep skills current, much less know what kind of skills will be needed to be successful in life and in the workforce. It’s no surprise that those that are best equipped to succeed in this new reality have something in common: they love learning and they do it continually.
In addition, research indicates that the 21st Century skills students need to be success-ful beyond school aren’t skills that are readily acquired in the classroom. As I’ve heard one educator say, there aren’t many careers where our graduates will be expected to fill in multiple choice bubbles with a number two pencil all day. I worry that our stu-dents think that learning means knowing enough to pass a test and that what students learn is dictated by standardized testing. I don’t think there are enough opportunities for students to learn critical thinking and problem solving skills or even explore the top-ics they are truly passionate about.
It’s more important than ever that RCPL be a place where curiosity can be fueled and opportunities to learn abound for all ages. As we celebrate National Library Week and the role of RCPL in this community, I want to leave you with this quote:
Warmly,

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be
those who cannot read and write, but those
who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
- Alvin Toffler
Featured StaffQ: How does your job make this library better?A: I have truly helped people with some of the most important aspects of their lives finding jobs and increasing skills and comfort levels with technology. I’m also helping teens and
adults hone their music skills with the Guitar Club at St. Andrews Regional. (See page 9 for event details.) Q: Why did you choose to work in libraries?A: When I decided to go back to school, it seemed like the most practical and viable alternative between teaching, law school or an MBA. For nearly two decades, I’ve worked in some very interesting and diverse places in the private and public sectors.
Q: What is your most memorable library experience?A: My first library job was as a researcher for a large corporation in Dallas, but I get the same sense of accomplishment working at a public library and helping people. I don’t know if I could comfortably go back to the “other side.” I’m not the same person.

“…Storytelling at it’s best…don’t miss her.” - Star Tribune, Minneapolis MN
“…The star was San Francisco’s Brenda Wong Aoki…stunning performances.” - Seattle Times
Brenda Wong Aoki is the featured guest for the 26th annual Augusta Baker’s Dozen Storytelling Celebration, presented by the Richland County Public Library, USC School of Library and Infor-mation Science and the Friends of RCPL. Clad in the traditional kimono of a Japanese itinerant storyteller, she uses an exquisitely painted fan and her waist-length hair as her only props. Brenda Wong Aoki performs song/dance/dramas drawn from Kabuki legend, her
grandfather’s memories of San Francisco and her own life experiences. A writer, performer and recording artist, her work blends Japanese traditional theater with contemporary story. Enjoy a special performance at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13 in the Bostick Auditorium at the Main Library, followed by a book signing. Thank you to the 2012 contributors: C.G. Staff Review | Who hasn’t dreamed of being rescued
from their altogether mundane life and transported
somewhere extraordinary? September has, and so,
she is taken by the Green Wind and the Leopard of
Small Breezes to Fairyland. This strange place is ruled
by an iron-fisted Marquess from whom September must
steal a spoon. Of course, she does not travel alone. A
Wyvern named A-Through-L (because his father was a
library), a paper lantern named Gleam and a marid
named Saturday all accompany September on her
quest. This light tale turns dark when our heroine finally
encounters the Marquess and learns the hard truth of
Fairyland. But then again, what do you expect of a
place that asks for blood and a lie before it will allow
you to enter? For fans of Alice, Dorothy and Milo, this
novel is brimming with beautiful language, clever
characters and unexpected adventure.

We are here to inspire you - to entertain
you - and to inform you! The stories we hear
from you, our customers, every day inspire
and motivate us. You have told us how you
use your library not only to borrow materi-
als, but to find employment, reconnect with
long-lost friends and family, learn new skills
and spend time with those you care about.
Your stories should be told. Tell us!
