Dr Amer Ahmad SharifManaging Director, Education Division,

Dubai Healthcare City

Dr Amer Ahmad Sharif is the Managing Director of Dubai Healthcare City’s Education Division responsible for leading the development of the education projects in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center. The center was established to champion academia in healthcare to serve Dubai, the UAE and the region.

Dr Amer previously held several positions at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), most recently as Director of Healthcare Operations within the Hospital Services Sector. He has also acted as an Advisor on Health System Development, Director of Human Resources and Director of Continuing Education departments. Dr Amer has also played an important role in leading several research projects within DHA, mainly focused on workforce development and medical education. In addition, he actively established links between DHA and other organizations both nationally and internationally.

In addition to his extensive professional career, Dr Amer is a dedicated academic and is simultaneously completing a PhD in Public Health at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), UAE University (UAEU). His research is mainly focused on evaluating the UAE health care system.

Dr Amer is regularly invited to lecture at prestigious institutions, such as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dubai and the Institute of Public Health at UAE University, and to speak at various medical conferences. His work has also been published in international journals, and presented at several conferences.

Dr Amer obtained his Medical degree at CMHS, UAEU in 2003 and earned his Master of Science (MSc) in Healthcare Management at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 2007. Dr Amer was recognized with the Best Employee Award by the DHA and received the prestigious Sheikh Rashid Award for Excellence for Distinguished Students, for being the gold medalist at the CMHS, UAEU.

Dr Mohammad Abdulqader Al RedhaChairperson RCSI UAE Chapter

Dr Mohammad Al Redha is the Director of the Health Data and Information Analysis Department at the Dubai Health Authority. His main responsibility is to develop the necessary standards for implementing and managing the health information systems in the Emirate of Dubai. Before joining the Health Policy & Strategy Sector,

Dr Mohammad was a Research Fellow in Clinical Informatics at the Division of Clinical Informatics, Harvard Medical School in Boston (2008-2009). His main focus was redefining the standards of healthcare to meet international standards while creating a very patient-focused, research-enriched environment. Prior to joining the field of informatics, Dr Mohammad was the Assistant Chief Operating Officer at Rashid Hospital – a 600 bed trauma facility serving Dubai since 1973. Dr Al Redha is a graduate and postgraduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and holds a Masters Degree (MSc) in Healthcare Management. He is also a member of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Programme for Leadership Development Programme and a Fellow at the Dubai School of Government.

Dr Mary CollinsSenior Executive Development Specialist, RCSI Institute of Leadership

Dr Mary Collins has been working in the Organisation Development/Talent Management field for over 14 years. She joined Deloitte in 2006 as the Head of Talent Development & Learning. Prior to that, she had a range of different OD roles in the Telecoms sector. Mary has recently commenced work with the RCSI Institute of Leadership. This role involves working with senior leaders in the healthcare sector to develop their management and leadership capabilities through a range of executive development approaches e.g. executive coaching, 360 feedback, master classes etc. Mary is also involved in academic work with the IOL including lecturing on a range of Masters Programmes and also conducting research for the Institute. She currently lectures part-time on a range of OD/HR topics on the MSc in Management in DCU, MSc. in Human Resource Development in NUI Maynooth.

Mary also supervises research at masters and doctoral levels. Mary completed the Professional Doctorate Programme in Dublin City University in 2010. Her research focus was looking at enhancing the psychological contract of Generation Y in the professional service sector to enhance performance and engagement levels. She is now a regular conference and key note speaker in this area.

Mary is an accredited coach with the Association of Coaching (AC) and is qualified in the use of a range of psychometric and personality assessment instruments. She is also a Licensed Business NLP Practitioner and holds an Advanced Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy.

Mary is co-authoring a book due to be published in spring 2014 with the Institute of Chartered Accountants titled ‘Managing Smart People and Other Professionals’.

Dr Farhad Kheradmand AljanahiSpecialist Urologist and Transplant Surgeon, Dubai Hospital

Dr Farhad is a senior urologist at Dubai Hospital, DHA. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed his specialty training in urology and kidney transplant in Ireland and the UK. He has a special interest in renal transplant surgery and prostate cancer.

Dr Alice McGarvey, PhDVice Dean for Career Development, RCSI

Dr McGarvey is Vice Dean with particular responsibility for Career Development and a Senior Lecturer of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). As Vice Dean for Career Development, she works to prepare students for postgraduate opportunities both domestically and abroad.

Dr McGarvey earned a Bachelor’s degree in education and preclinical medical studies as well as a Master of Science in anatomy and anthropology from the University College Dublin (UCD). She earned a PhD in 2005 from RCSI.

After completing her PhD, Dr McGarvey served in the Department of Anatomy at RCSI and has served two terms as Vice Dean for Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. In her senior-level roles, she has been involved in the development of initiatives to support students through the student journey at RCSI. More recently she has been particularly involved with developing international collaborative agreements as the majority of students have an international background. She has been integrally involved in developing mentorship programmes throughout RCSI, with particular interest in the last few years in developing roles to increase alumni participation. Dr McGarvey believes that RCSI alumni are key to the future success of our students as they pursue careers opportunities internationally. She also works with a National Group in Ireland to develop a cohesive approach to clinical electives. Dr McGarvey is an invited member of the Special Advisory Group for Global Education in Medicine Exchange (GEMx) an initiative developed by the Education Commission for Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Dr McGarvey’s research interests include selective and nonselective cyclooxygenase inhibitors and their influence on the morphology and kinetics of the intestinal mucosa. She is also actively involved in internationalization and the understanding the impact of cultural diversity on students who attend Western, higher-level institutions.

Mr Colm McLoughlinExecutive Vice Chairman,

Dubai Duty Free

Colm McLoughlin was a member of the consultancy team from Aer Rianta, the Irish Airport Authority, which was contracted by the Dubai Government to launch the new duty free operation in 1983. He remained in Dubai as General Manager of the new operation, later becoming Managing Director and being named Dubai Duty Free’s Executive Vice Chairman in July 2011. Under the Executive Vice Chairman’s leadership, Dubai Duty Free has grown dramatically over the past 30 years during which the business grew from US$20 million (1984) to Dhs6.6 billion (US$1.8 billion) in 2013. Colm is a recipient of several personal awards including the Frontier ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, the ‘Galway Millennium Man of the Year’, the ‘Most Distinguished Employee Award’ from the Dubai Government Excellence Awards and the ‘Businessman of the Year’ from the Middle East Business Awards. In April 2012, Colm was also honoured with the ‘DFNI 25th Anniversary Lifetime Achievement in Duty Free Award’ by Duty Free News International. In November, he was presented with the Esquire magazine’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his outstanding contribution to the travel retail industry. In September, he was named CEO of the Year at the 3rd Asian Leadership Awards in Dubai in recognition of his vision, excellent leadership and great contribution to duty free industry. In October 2013, he was presented with the Sir Michael Smurfit Business Achievement Award at 25th Annual American Celtic Ball in New York, which recognizes the business and humanitarian achievements made by Irish nationals living both in Ireland and overseas. Colm has the overall responsibility for the operation and its subsidiary businesses, which include The Irish Village, The Century Village, the Dubai Tennis Stadium, home to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel.

Professor Ciaran O’BoyleDirector, RCSI Institute of Leadership

Professor Ciaran O’Boyle is the Director of the Institute and an RCSI Professor of Psychology. He established the first Department of Psychology in an Irish Medical School in 1985. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the School of Dental Science at Trinity College Dublin, Vice Dean of the RCSI Faculty of Medicine and a member of the RCSI Senior Management Team. He is the National Educator for the RCSI Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS) Programme. Before joining RCSI, he was a senior research psychologist at the UCD Department of Psychiatry at St James’s Hospital in Dublin. He holds a BSc & a PhD, both from UCD, a Diploma in Theology from the Milltown Institute of Theology & Philosophy and a Diploma in Organisational Leadership from the University of Oxford. He lectures extensively in Ireland and internationally and he has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers, two books and numerous book chapters. He has been a consultant psychologist to a range of national and international public and private sector organisations in the military, aviation, financial services and healthcare sectors.

Professor David L WhitfordHead of School of Postgraduate Studies & Research and Professor of Family & Community Medicine, RCSI Bahrain

David L Whitford, MD (Cantab), MA (Cantab), MB BS, FRCGP, DRCOG graduated in medicine from St Johns College, Cambridge University and Newcastle University. Following vocational training in general practice he gained Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners and joined a general practice in Newcastle upon Tyne. He chaired the North Tyneside Medical Audit Advisory Group for 3 years and then established North Tyneside as the first Research Primary Care Trust in England and Wales in 2001. He was elected to Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners and subsequently gained his doctorate degree from Cambridge University in 2004. He was then appointed Senior Lecturer in General Practice in RCSI, Dublin and promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. Later that year he was seconded to RCSI Bahrain as Head of the Department of Family & Community Medicine to establish the community based teaching. He was appointed as Chair of the Research Committee and Director of Quality Assurance in 2007. In 2012 he became Head of the School of Postgraduate Studies & Research in RCSI Bahrain. He is author of over 50 peer reviewed publications and has supervised 3 PhD and 3 MSc students. He is currently conducting a trial aimed at the prevention of type 2 diabetes in Saudi Arabia and is engaged in other research on diabetes, stroke disease and water pipe smoking.
