Scalloway

• Scalloway Population: 2001 = 11292011 = 1479

• 242 of 629 applicants on the Council’s housing waiting list included Scalloway as one of their preferred areas of choice

• Scalloway has numerous shops and facilities, a busy port and harbour, a college, a youth centre, a conservation area, a castle, primary school, health centre, public hall etc.

• However…no suitable sites for housing or business/industry were identified within the core of the village in our current Local Development Plan (Adopted 2014)

Aims of Making Places Initiative

• To support and build communities’ skills and confidence; support a wide range

of participative design events; assist communities in realising their aspirations.

• Making Places will support a wide range of processes, events and projects to actively involve communities in discussions about the future of their place.

• Projects should be focussed on tackling inequality, and will have a clear impact on combating disadvantage through community-led and place-based working

Community-Led Design

“There will be a particular focus on community design processes that pilot or support

potential models to support the development of local place plans”.

“Support to deliver a range of participative design and place-based workshops

(including charrettes) – enabling communities to arrive at a vision for their place

and make the best use of its assets”.

• It is hoped that the most immediate benefit to the community of Scalloway is one of empowerment by being provided with the opportunity to become involved and shape how the village should develop. This should help develop trust and transparency of working with stakeholders to make a positive change to their area.

Aim for the Session: To identify issues in Scalloway faced by young people which can be addressed by the Local Place Plan

Toilet Roll Exercise 20 minutes • Ask pupils to form a circle

• Using a roll of toilet roll, ask pupils to take as many squares as they’ll need (not

disclosing why)

• Start by asking for an interesting fact about themselves for the first round, they drop a

bit of loo paper

• For each additional square go around the circle and ask for things they like/dislike

about Scalloway

Map Drawing Exercise 20 minutes • Ask young people to get into groups of 2 each group has 2 pens (one colour per

person)

• Hand out worksheets with map of Scalloway in middle

• Ask young people to draw their route to school and around the town (home- youth

centre/shops/bus stop) and identify things they like/dislike would like to see

improved, discussing with their partner

• Ask them to think about other users of the streets and problems they may face

• Walk around the room and record comments (audio) made by children

• Marker pens pack including an even number of colours
