1. INTRODUCTION: 

1.1 History of RE-LIVE! @Heartland  RE-LIVE! @ Hea rtland was sta rted to mark Singapor e‟s Youth and Environment

da y in c onjunct ion w ith World Environme nt Day as ded ic ate d b y the United

Nations on the 5 th June of eve ry year.

1.1.1 In its maiden year  (2008), the event was held at “The Atrium” where

it saw toge the r about 100,000 me mb ers of the p ub lic ove r the span

of 11 da ys. The e vent a lso b roug ht to gethe r over 150 young lea de rs

with its them e foc using on ene rgy e ffic iency, spec ific a lly greentransportation, and water conservation.

1.1.2 In 2009, RE-LIVE! @ Hea rtland (Bug is) saw to gether ove r 20,000

mem be rs of the p ublic over the spa n of 3 da ys eng ag ing a bo ut 300

youth lea de rs.

1.2 Rationale of doing RE-LIVE! @Hea rtland  

1.2.1 The event is mo nthly held in loca tions whe re young pe op le ha ng

out to b e a ble to m aximize its prominence and pe netrate into the

youth community.

1.2.2 As the word RE-LIVE sta te its ow n me aning (i.e.) to rethink the w ay

you live, it is an op portunity given to us on how to a c t efficiently to

save our environme nt a nd to a c hieve sustainab le d evelopm ent.

1.2.3 The a c c essib ility for the p ublic to this event in the Hea rtland w as

easy and c omfortab le.

1.2.4 To att rac t more c row ds into the exhib ition, we had insta lled a sma ll

bazaa r of no t more tha n 15 sta lls. All the sta lls we re ec o -friend ly and

sold the ir p rod uc ts without p roviding a ny plastic b ags to c rea te

aw areness am ong pub lic .

1.2.5 In the exhibition we divide d the educ a tion frame work for

susta inab le c onsump tion in e veryda y lifestyle into the follow ing

categories:

•  To give the  pu blic a chance to understand the concept of “re-thinking the way

you live”. 

•  To a llow the p ublic to learn a bo ut the ma ny wa ys in c ontributing

•  To e nsure the pub lic prac tic e w hat the y had lea rnt.

1.4 ACHIEVEMENTS: 

We a re p lea sed to share that w e ha ve d one our best in making the event a s ec o-friend ly as possible w ith quite a ha nd ful of mea sures. Therefore, ap a rt from the

exhibition a rea , one of the key efforts we have put in is to b e a ble to have the trad e

fair mo re ec o friend ly. Othe r tha n off-sett ing fo r the event , we hop e to we ave in slow ly

the green message s. However, we we re a lso w ell awa re it wo uld be imp ossib le t o

c hang e everything. Instea d, w e have ta ken mo re o f inc rem enta l step s to slow ly

influenc e of p artner.

We p lea sed to ha ve d one the follow ing:

•  Have pa rtic ipa ting ve ndo rs (non-food ) to g ive out reusab le b ag s that we have

spec ially printed for the e vent so residents around the a rea c an b ring t heir ow n

bags

•  We ha ve informed the d rink sta lls as we ll to p rovide supp ort for mem bers of t he

p ublic who b ring the ir ow n b ottles to fill up the d rinks instea d of p urc ha sing

from b uying d isposab les c ups

•  Bring ing in o f Hyb rid Ca rs

•  Having a n op erato r to sell p la nts

•  Putting up informa tion pa nels (18 of them) around on environm enta l me ssage s

•  Gene rat or po we red b y biodiesel

Lea rning from the previous setup , we rec og nized that be ing an environme ntal them ed

(desp ite w e didn't p ut in the wo rd ENVIRONMENT in any of t he hea der), peo p le usua lly

will detour from our site . The a ttrac tion c om es if the re a re th ings to b uy or even food .

Therefore in the new site , we ha d p rop osed to ha ve the exhib ition just b ehind the foo d

sa les with a c lear ca rpet w alkwa y tow ards our area . Also, we spe c ific ally p ut in

ad ditiona l interact ive m od ules and vide os so the pub lic c an play a round with it.

The resp onse from the pub lic ha s be en ge nerally positive. The who le eve nt d rew

ab out 10,000 mem bers of the p ublic while w e ha ve ma nage d to eng ag e a bout 80-100 c ap tive aud ienc e on the w eekda ys and ab out 150 on the we ekends.

In fac t, we a re p leased to sha re tha t within the we ek da ys, we have stud ent s b ringing

their friends to the exhib it to g et involved in the q uiz we have c rea ted . And the re a re

residents nearby a s we ll bring their own neighb ours to c hec k it out. They have found

them me aningful and we have bee n fortunate to have them c ap tured in our

da ta ba se which we will be follow ing up promp tly on.

This event, as me ntioned during our introduc tion, is a youth led initiat ive eve nt tha t

aims to ed uca te the p ublic reg arding the five a spe c ts of the environme nt and wha t

they, as individua ls c an d o t o c ontribute , making Singa po re a greener city than it w as

befo re. This sec tion w ill be d ivided into th ree p a rts;

•  Arrang em ents ma de prior to the e vent,

•  The event set up and its c ontent a nd

•  Our ob servation.

2.1 Arrangem ents Made Prior to Event:

2.1.1 Working hoursThe event usua lly sta rts a t 12 pm a nd c loses around 10 pm. Vend ors a re to sell

their products during these hours.

2.1.2 Volunte ers

The vo lunteers c ame in shift b asis and it w as ma de tha t a t least tw o o f them

we re p resent in the information c ounter always to g uide and help the pub lic in

answe ring the questionna ire.

2.2 The Event Set Up  The set up of the eve nt is simple, allow ed peo ple to wa lk a round with suffic ient

space.

At the ent ranc e a rea , the first thing the y see w ill be the TV which show ed the m any

d ifferent c lips relating to the e nvironm ent . This wa s to a ttrac t the public intoc oming into the event.

The t ab le c onsisting o f a b rief de sc rip tion of o ur event and the questionna ires we re

near the entranc e too.

The informa tion c ounter wa s c learly visib le to the pub lic w hen t hey step in. The

informa tion c ounte r wa s not o nly used to d iscuss with the p ublic informa tion a b out

the eve nt and the q uestionna ire b ut also to display the p rod uct s ma de b y the

pa rtners. Pa rtners in this eve nt ha ve their ow n p anels loc a ted a t the perime ter of

the event.

2.2.1 Panel Arrangements

The e vent w as set in a w ay whe re the re w ere six panels, ea c h c onta ining the

d ifferent a spe c ts of the environm ent . The six pa nels a re a rrange d in hexago n

sha pe ea c h so a s to a llow the pub lic to rea d it with ea se. The p anels a re

arra nge d such tha t pub lic have am ple spa c e to w alk around w hile rea ding it.

In this event, we a dd ed a spa c e for the p ublic to sit a nd wa tc h a series ofNo: 1739 

do cum entary and movie relating to e nvironmental c once rns and ed uca tion.

2.2.3 Exhibition Content

As me ntioned , the p ane ls are c at eg orized ac c ording t o d ifferent a spe c ts of

the environm ent ; wa ter, food , energy, wa ste , shelter and b iod iversity.

Eac h of t hese p anels c onta in the definitions of the ir ow n, the c urrent situa tion

now , the importanc e o f these a spe c ts to our lives and wha t w e, individua ls c an

do to c ontribute to a better environment.

2.3 Our Observa tion During the a fternoon p eriod , the c row d w ould b e no rma l. It usually c onta ins sc hoo l

c hild ren a nd e lder peop le. But their ea ge rness to p a rticipa te in the exhib ition wa s

higher comp ared to other peop le.

Mo st of t he p ub lic w ill a rrive d uring the e vening time when there is a sc ree ning o f

movies/documentaries.

The m ost highlighte d fea ture o f the e vent w as a bicyc le w hic h p rod uce s energy

by rid ing it. Som e o f the d evices tha t it co uld run were light bulb , sma ll fan a nd a

radio.

To ed uc at e the p eop le, some ed uca tional vide o c lips we re a dd ed in a playlist

and pe ople c ould browse through it by the c omp uters plac ed in the e ntranc e.

After finishing the questionnaire, pub lic mo ves to the informa tion c ounte r to know

the c orrec t a nswe rs and c ollec t the ir gifts.

The vo lunteers present o ver the information c ounter rec eive the m and ed uca te

them a bout the ec ologica l problems.

There w ere ma ny gifts given t o the pub lic for answe ring the questionna ire fo rms.

Some of them were a b ookmark, an eco ba dg e, a rec ycled pen, a lanyard a nd a

recyclable bag.

For the p ast tw o w ee ks of the exhib ition at Tamp ines, we ha ve rec eived ma ny po sitiveresponses from the public . Som e of them a re:

3.1 Level of Engagem ent: Peop le e ntering into our exhibition w ant t o learn mo re a nd understand mo re a bo ut

the e nvironm ent . When given w ith the q uestionna ire, they wo uld take their time to

wa lk a round the exhib ition sea rc hing for the right a nswe rs.

The volunteers also m ana ge d to draw the atte ntion o f the uninterested pub lic by

ge tting them in to the exhib ition area and a nswe ring the q uestionna ire. Most of

them we re eage r and interested in know ing the a nswe rs and ra ised issue s about the

questionna ire or informa tion ba nners tha t they do not und ersta nd .

Not only that , there a re p eop le tha t visited the exhibition o nce and the ne xt time

they were see n at t he e xhibition, they broug ht a long the ir friend s and pa rents.

Ec o vo lunteers we re a lso spo tte d a t the exhib ition. It was a lso no tice d tha t p eo ple in

group s or pa irs a re m ore w illing and interested to ha ve a look at the exhib ition ra the r

than p eop le that a re alone.

3.2 Interactive Corners: There w ere Interac tive c orners at the exhib ition:

„What have you done to reduce water usage?‟ and „What have you done to

save the environment?‟ 

This interac tive session suc c essfully ma na ge d to eng age the different a ge

group s of p ublic . The pub lic a re w illing to sha re w ith o thers by writing d ow n on

the b oa rd a bo ut how they p layed a p a rt in saving the environme nt, these a re

prec ious informa tion that c ould not b e found on o ur informa tion ba nners a nd

othe rs wo uld be ab le t o learn from it.

3.2.2 Television

Another would be the television tha t wa s plac ed at the entranc e of the

exhibition. It ma nag ed to d raw the p ublic attention a nd g ot them in to the

exhib ition a fter wa tc hing the vide os tha t a re b eing sc ree ned . There w ere a lso

p eop le tha t a sked a b out the mo vie sc reening show times too.

our expe rienc e a fter the tw o w eeks a t RE-LIVE Choa Chu Kang :

4.1 Rea ching out to target market: There a re q uite a number of peop le w ho c am e to our event. Howeve r, we c an

venture into different wa ys to reac h out to mo re p eop le b y:

4.1.1 Send ing invitations/ notifica tion to nearing sc hoo ls to let them know of the

event. 

Elab oration: A d eta iled sugg estion w ill be to let the stud ents from CCA group

who are interested in environme nt (Green c lub in p rima ry and sec ond ary

schoo ls) to a ttend our event . In return, sc hoo l may offer them CC A points.

4.1.2 Giving out ba lloons to children 

Elab oration: During we ekend s, we c an give o ut ba lloo ns to c hildren wa lking

a round the nea rest ma ll w ith a p rint o f our RE-LIVE logo o n it. We hop e these

c hildren c an bring t heir pa rents along to our event.We w ill also inform the p a rents of these c hild ren a synop sis of o ur even t so tha t

they w ill know wha t the event is ab out.

4.1.3 Plac ing one A4 size poster at the notice b oa rd situated nea r the lifts

nearing eve nt date. 

Elab oration: The p urp ose o f this is to inform the p ublic a bout t he event

befo reha nd so tha t they c an visit our exhib ition when they a re free.

We will plac e it at the no tic e b oa rd nea r the lifts be c ause w e ob served that

the p ub lic w ill rea d throug h som e of the notific a tions of the b oa rd w hile

wa iting for the lift.

The  poster  will  be designed in such a way that it will attract the  pu blic‟s 

attention.

4.2 Enga gement: During the event, we ha ve tried to eng ag e the pub lic by ha ving m ovie sc reening

which show ca sed movies and d oc umenta ries ab out the different aspe c ts of the

environme nt, allow ing the p ublic t o pe n do wn wha t they have d one to save

wa ter and the e nvironme nt, and having a TV near the entranc e to c ap ture the pu blic‟s attention. 

How ever, this c an be furthe r imp roved b y:

•  Cond ucting g am es related to the environment to enga ge the p ublic .

•  Ha ve Chinese t ranslation fo r som e o f the p oste rs.

informa tion c ounter c a n also be d ec orated for attract ing the p ublic a ttention.

4.4 Red uc tion of plastic usage 

Since this eve nt is c ollabo ra ted w ith the Pasar Malam, we should sugg est to the

Pasar Ma lam sta ll ho lde rs to reduc e the ir usage o f p lastics.

Our event is to p rom ote c onservation, educ at e the p ublic on the m a ny ways to

help save the environme nt.

It is thus imp ortan t if the Pasa r Ma lam d o t heir pa rt to o in reduc ing the ir p lastic

usage so tha t we c an all wo rk tow a rds re-thinking the wa y we live.
