TUESDAY AUGUST 6

How Improv Can Improve Your Training Skills Steve Willis & Darrell Harmon

Room: Cascade A11:00 – 12:15 & 1:30 – 2:45

What can improvisation teach you about being a better facilitator? Plenty! In the classroom, you’re often thrown “curve balls” by participants who intentionally or inadvertently throw you off your game. That’s why flexibility (e.g., making it up as you go) is a core classroom management competency. VitalSmarts Master Trainers will teach you how improv can help you stay focused, yet flexible, and turn whatever is tossed your way into a positive experience. Think of improv as your well-planned guide to spontaneity!

Training to the Bottom Line: Measuring Your Training InvestmentDavid Maxfield

Room: Cascade B11:00 – 12:15 & 1:30 – 2:45

The best way to gain support for and guarantee the life of your training is to measure your progress and publish your results. Author David Maxfield will share methods, survey instruments, and new tools from VitalSmarts for measuring the outcomes of your training initiative.

Creating Environments that Lead to LearningCricket Buchler & Barbara Hauser

Am I Really Making a Difference?Ron McMillan, Cofounder of VitalSmarts and New York Times Bestselling Author

As Program Manager at Radio Tanzania, Martha Swai has changed the behavior of the entire country through entertainment education. Throughout the 1990s, Swai collaborated with her talented team of writers and producers to craft stories with the goal to strengthen families, improve women’s rights, and reduce HIV/AIDS. To this end, Swai created her flagship series Twende na Wakati (“Let’s Go with the Times”), a radio serial drama that addresses these rampant social problems.

During the twenty years since her programs debuted, 88 percent of listeners, or 7 million people, have adopted critical behaviors to stop the transmission of HIV/AIDS because of the stories carried on the airwaves. Additionally, her listeners were more likely to seek marital counseling, make better use of family planning, and remain faithful to spouses, than were their neighbors who didn’t tune in.

Martha’s work in education entertainment has been documented by multiple social scientists, including Everett Rogers and Arvind Singhal in their book, Combating AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action; as well as by Kerry Patterson et al in their book, Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change.

Swai will receive the Albert Bandura Influencer Award, a lifetime achievement award named for the Stanford psychologist who advanced the field of human behavior change. The Award is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to improving personal, social, or organizational well-being through novel application of social science that advances the world’s capacity to solve important problems.
