Rondalla Category B Competition - 9 contestants 3. What can you say about the piece Ku-Kudlung or Sabukay by Dr. Ramon P. Santos? It’s always very interesting to hear compositions of Dr. Santos. Although I'm not exactly a fan of his works, it still interests me to hear and experience his music. This particular piece isn't as hard to appreciate as his other works. This one appeals to me in a very different way probably because it’s my first time hearing a Dr. Santos work played by a rondalla group, and of kids to top that. 4. Who do you think among the contestants rendered the best interpretation of the contest piece? Why? (You may write the contestant number) I have no one particular in mind since I haven't seen or studied the piece yet. Thus, I feel that my judgment would greatly be subjective. But if I had to choose which of the group had the best interpretation, in my own judgment, I would have to go with either group number or 8. For no clear reason whatsoever, the groups’ interpretation just appealed to me more than the other groups. 5. In your opinion, who should have won the grand prize? State the reasons. If I had to choose which performing group should've won, I’d probably go with number 3. If I’m not mistaken, they are the group wearing blue gowns. I’d choose them with the presumption that they had the best interpretation for the piece Paladio by Karl Jenkins, which really made me appreciate the art of rondalla even more. They had a very clean interpretation of Dr. Santos’ Ku-Kudlung and also gave their 3rd piece justice. What appealed to me the most was how aware they are of the dynamics of the songs.

Reaction Paper: 2015 NAMCYA Rondalla Competition

1. What is the theme for NAMCYA 2015

• Taghoy ng Kalikasan - Sagot ay Musikahan (Nurture Nature with Music)

2. How many contestants were there in Rondalla B or Rondalla Solo A?

• Rondalla Category B Competition - 9 contestants

3. What can you say about the piece Ku-Kudlung or Sabukay by Dr. Ramon P. Santos?

• It’s always very interesting to hear compositions of Dr. Santos. Although I'm not exactly a

fan of his works, it still interests me to hear and experience his music. This particular piece

isn't as hard to appreciate as his other works. This one appeals to me in a very different

way probably because it’s my first time hearing a Dr. Santos work played by a rondalla

group, and of kids to top that.

4. Who do you think among the contestants rendered the best interpretation of the contest piece?

Why? (You may write the contestant number)

• I have no one particular in mind since I haven't seen or studied the piece yet. Thus, I feel

that my judgment would greatly be subjective. But if I had to choose which of the group had

the best interpretation, in my own judgment, I would have to go with either group number or

8. For no clear reason whatsoever, the groups’ interpretation just appealed to me more than

the other groups.

5. In your opinion, who should have won the grand prize? State the reasons.

• If I had to choose which performing group should've won, I’d probably go with number 3. If

I’m not mistaken, they are the group wearing blue gowns. I’d choose them with the

presumption that they had the best interpretation for the piece Paladio by Karl Jenkins,

which really made me appreciate the art of rondalla even more. They had a very clean

interpretation of Dr. Santos’ Ku-Kudlung and also gave their 3rd piece justice. What

appealed to me the most was how aware they are of the dynamics of the songs.

6. Write your comments / suggestions / etc. regarding the competition.

• I can say that the competition overall was a success. Although I do have to point several

things that could further improve the experience of going to a NAMCYA competition:

a) It would've been better if the audience were properly educated, or at the very least

informed, with how these events go. I’ve had difficulties concentrating on watching

the competition with all the commotion the audience are making.

b) Strict implementation of the concert hall rules would very much make a difference.

c) Short breaks in between performances wouldn't cost that much. It’s really hard to let

everything sink in when the competition is non-stop
