CATCO IS THEATRE | 2014–2015

THEATRE is a shared experience that illuminates the mysteries of our humanity. Its magic has the power to transform us whether on

stage, in the classroom, or in our diverse communities. CATCO creates theatre that delights, challenges, and transports.

What is CATCO’s brand?CATCO has always been thought-provoking entertainment. I think my love of stories well-told has pushed the seasons into a warmer narrative and less of an intellectual abstraction. Examples include the incredible stories being told on the CATCO stage this year: a disfigured man with an enormous heart; an orphan boy with dreams of adventure; a mother trying to scoop up some of the remnants of her relationship with her dead son; a dysfunctional family of eccentrics in search of harmony; and, of course, A Boy Named Sue who Walked the Line—Johnny Cash. What each has in common is a very human story.

What qualifies you to lead CATCO?Part of it is history. I have been a part of the local theatrical scene for nearly four decades. I have learned to create strategies that are both nimble and agile. A fearlessness in decision-making and a willingness to fail sometimes. I think finally it is how much I care about making a special place for audiences.

How would you measure the impact you have had on CATCO in the past five years? The first five years were about developing financial sustainability and creating programming that predicted success while shifting the artistic rudder a little bit. Most of our work over the past five years was prescriptive. Now we can be more aspirational. We can imagine even greater things.

Where do you think CATCO will be five years from now?People become more of who they are meant to be as they mature. It is a kind of distillation of purpose and characteristics. We believe organizations do the same thing. In the past five years CATCO has been known for innovation, collaboration and experimentation. There are projects and alliances that we will be sharing over the next six months that will indicate that we mean to be even more vibrant as we grow.

On the Aisle Q&A with Steven C. Anderson Who We Are A Short CATCO History

Producing commercially viable new work and regional and world premieres. Cultivating relationships with institutions of higher learning. Collaborating with other arts organizations. Exploring interesting spaces. Creating captivating programming and educational opportunities for all ages.

Just a few of CATCO’s ever-evolving and -changing strategic advantages to live up to its reputation as central Ohio’s Equity professional theatre company. “It takes unrelenting creativity to remain agile to respond to the artistic demands of our vibrant community, which is more discerning and sophisticated than ever before,” said Steven C. Anderson, CATCO’s Producing Director.

A priority is to continue to deliver current and fresh theatre offerings that will resonate with audiences ranging from the very young to millennials to empty nesters. New initiatives in the past year included celebrating local artistry and reaching new audience members by casting artists beyond those found in the theatre community, such as Nina West (Andrew Levitt) in the wickedly funny Broadway hit, Buyer & Cellar, during last season.

Add to the list finding unique spaces to share theatre. “We’re committed to go where people are and where they feel comfortable,” Anderson said. “We’re not restricting ourselves to downtown and traditional spaces.”

To make CATCO is Kids! productions more family-friendly, the theatre organization is producing all of its youth shows at the Columbus Performing Arts

Center on Franklin Avenue this season instead of in two locations. In addition to plenty of easily accessible parking and a convenient street entrance, the move means all youth theatre and education programs are under one roof.

In recent years, CATCO and CATCO is Kids! have produced a number of new plays, including The Last Smoker in America, The Rubenstein Kiss, The Twelve Dates of Christmas, The Wolf Tales (CATCO is Kids!) and The Final Table, and based upon their success of producing new work that is commercially viable, donors are increasing their funding for the production of world premieres. Watch for more in the future. The theatre is also shepherding the development of new work through its annual Playwrights Fellowship with the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

During the past year, CATCO and CATCO is Kids! continued to collaborate with new groups, including the Kent State University Theatre Department, The Ohio State University (Mansfield Branch), and Broadway2LA Acting Studio. “These ventures rejuvenate the creative juices for artists, and are stimulating for audiences when they see cross-pollinated works,” Anderson said.

What’s next? Expect the unexpected Anderson said. “We will continue to mix up our projects and programming. We are a young community, and we like variety.”

Beyond the Stage CATCO Programs

Adult Classes | CATCO staff provides monthly acting classes to help adults hone their skills for the stage or the boardroom.

“At Risk” Residencies | CATCO is Kids’ artist educators work in Columbus Public Schools teaching core curricula through drama.

Audition Classes | Students hone their audition skills and receive individual acting and vocal coaching. By the completion of the week, each student has an audition package evaluated by CATCO artistic staff.

Audition Showcase | This is an intensive program for youth who have chosen drama as a serious interest. At the end of each two-week session, local professional directors critique the participants.

CPAC | CATCO works in cooperation with Columbus Recreation and Parks to make the Columbus Performing Arts Center available to the community.

Finding Words | The Ohio Attorney General’s office employs CATCO and CATCO is Kids’ actors to train law enforcement officers and interrogators to question children, who are suspected of being abused.

Kids on the Block | (KOB), was developed to help children with disabilities to have their non-disabled peers understand and accept them. CATCO is Kids will tour Kids on the Block programs on Autism and Spina Bifida to 30 schools throughout Central Ohio during the next two years.

Learning Never Ends | CATCO works alongside instructors from Learning Never Ends to create three separate performance pieces for Adults with Developmental Disabilities.

Musical Theatre Creation Camps/Residencies | Part I: Musical Theatre Creation. Students collaborate with professional artists and peers to create the storyline and lyrics for an original musical.

Part II: Production Creation. Students create an imaginative storyline by adding original dance and storylines to the music/lyrics created in Musical Theatre Part I.

Playwrights Fellowship | Each year CATCO, in partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council, sponsors the annual Playwrights Fellowship to encourage development of new theatre in central Ohio. Each year the recipient receives a $5,000 fellowship and a staged reading of his/her play at CATCO.

PNC WordPlay | Pre-Kindergarten classes at West Broad Elementary and Hilltop Preschool develop literacy through acting simple stories with the assistance of a CATCO drama coach.

Saturday Afternoon Teen Scene StudyFall teen sessions are focused on film writing. In the spring, students act, direct and edit their own short movies.

Saturday Morning Musicals | Students spend Saturday mornings building the skills necessary to become “triple threat” performers, while learning and performing in a junior version of a Broadway musical.
