 An old Muslim man lived on a farmin the mountains of easternKampung Ketitir, Dungun with hisyoung grandson. Each morning

Grandpa wakeup early sitting atthe kitchen table reading hisQur¶aan. His grandson wanted to

be just like him and tried to imitatehim in every way he could. Oneday the grandson asked,

³Grandpa! I try to read the Qur¶an just like you but I don¶t understandit, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book.What good does reading theQur¶aan do?´ The Grandfather quietly turned from feeding his

chicken replied, ³Take this coalbasket down to the river and bringme back a basket of water.´

The boy did as he was told, but all the

water leaked out beforeh

e got back tothe house. The grandfather laughedand said, ³You¶ll have to move a littlefaster next time,´ and sent him back to

the river with the basket to try again.This time the boy ran faster, but againthe basket was empty before hereturned home. Out of breath, he toldhis grandfather that it was impossibleto carry water in a basket, and he wentto get a bucket instead.

The old man said, ³I don¶t want a bucket

of water; I want a basket of water. You¶re just not trying hard enough,´ and he wentout the door to watch the boy try again. At this point, the boy knew it was

impossible, but he wanted to show hisgrandfather that even if he ran as fast ashe could, the water would Leak outbefore he got back to the house. The boy

again dipped the basket into river and ranhard, but when he reached hisgrandfather the basket was again empty.

Out of breathe, he said, ³See

Grandpa, it¶s useless!´ ³So youthink it is useless?´

The old man said, ³Look at the

basket.´ The boy looked at thebasket and for the first timerealized that the basket was

different. It had been transformedfrom a dirty old coal basket andwas now clean, inside and out.

³Son, that¶s what happens when you

read the Qur¶an.

 You might not understand or 

remember everything, but when you

read it, you will be changed, insideand out. That is the work of Allah in

our lives.´
