Overview

This קריאה assessment was developed to be used together with the ספר הקריאה והקדושה. After learning each new skill in the ספר, the child’s mastery of the skill can be evaluated by using the accompanying assessment. The assessment is designed to identify the specific weakness the child may have in any step of the reading process.

The child that is being evaluated uses the assessment sheet that has the chart with the words only. The teacher or parent that is evaluating uses the teacher’s version. The teacher’s version is the sheet that has the chart with the or words, the boxes in the chart, and the tallying tables. The evaluator marks down any mistakes נקודות and אותיותthe child makes as he or she is reading. Above and below each אות and נקודה is a box. Any incorrect pronunciation of an אות should be noted in the box above it. For example, If the child mistakenly calls a “ד” a “ר”, a “ר” should be written in the box above the “ד.” Any incorrect pronunciation of a נקודה should be noted in the box below it. For example, if the child mistakenly reads a “ ” as a “ ”, a “ ” should be written in the box below the “ ”. Since the to mark נקודות as opposed to below the נקודות there is a box on top of the ,נקודות assessment tests only the נקודותthe mistakes that the child makes as he or she reads.

Each new skill has its’ own assessment. Since mastery of אותיות and נקודות are so crucial they are always assessed together with the new skill taught. For example, while assessing the students mastery of the שוא rules, boxes are still provided to mark down any mistakes made in the אותיות and נקודות. The box that relates to the specific new skill is shaded gray.

Upon completion of the assessment for each specific skill, the mistakes in אותיות and נקודות are tallied as well. This system allows the parent or teacher to record and correct any difficulty the child is experiencing so that every child can become fluent in קריאה.

A child can make up to 5 different mistakes on an evaluation and still be a confident reader. If the child makes the same mistake more than once, then the child may need help with that particular אות or נקודה.

Additionally, there are three versions of every test [A, B &C]. The purpose of this is for re-testing, so the student shouldn’t recognize the test material resulting in an inaccurate re-test.

Enclosed is a sample evaluation so that the evaluator can see how children should be evaluated.

September 1, 2011- Ploni was evaluated on his mastery of letters with test one. He was struggling with the Dagesh letters and

the ד ,ר ,ה and ח. Ploni did not know the letter ש at all. His teacher sent home flashcards with the letters that he was struggling

with along with some extra hints and tricks. After one month Ploni mastered the letters.

October 2, 2011 - Ploni was reassessed on his letters. He knew every single one. Any mistake that he made was self-corrected.

November 13, 2011- Ploni was tested on the Nekudos with test two. He made 20 mistakes out of 56. He called a lot of differ-

ent Nekudos a Shva. We see that he responds very well when he uses tactile manipulatives during Kriah such as play dough,

sand paper….. We will work with him in that way.

November 20,2011 - Ploni was reassessed on his Nekudos using test two again. He has made much progress, this time only

making 4 mistakes out of 56. However he still needs a lot more review with the Shva. We will continue to use tactile manipula-

tives to help Ploni reach mastery of the nekudos.
