In the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells, theres a famous race called the Man Versus Horse Marathon. The

race is unusual because humans compete against riders on horses.

The e ent started in !"#$ when %ordon %reen heard two of his guests ha ing a friendly argument in his

hotel, the &euadd 'rms. They were tal(ing about men being strong and fast enough to race against horses.

%ordon wanted to disco er who would win a race li(e that, so he organised the first race and encouraged

local runners to ta(e part. He also thought this was an e)cellent way to attract more guests to his hotel.

Hundreds of e)cited spectators arri ed to watch the tough race. Most people e)pected a horse to win at the

end of the race, and thats e)actly what happened. *ince then, trying to defeat these four+legged animals has

    become a yearly e ent.

The twenty+two mile race starts in the town s uare and ta(es o er two hours to finish. The runners and

horses race across the countryside, through forests and along mountain paths. The trac( is also ery hilly, so

it is especially difficult on foot. 'nn -ing was the first woman to ta(e part in the race in !"#!. our years

later, cyclists were allowed to compete, and /ac ui 0helan, a 1.*. champion cyclist nearly won the race. In

!"#", 2ritish cyclist Tim %ould finally beat the first horse by three minutes. Howe er, for indi idual runners

on foot, it was still a huge tas(.

3 er the years, local citi4ens and professional athletes from all o er the world ha e trained ery hard for the

popular race. In 5$$6, there were fi e hundred runners and fifty horses. This was the highest number of

contestants to e er ta(e part. 'lso, it was the first time in o er twenty years that a man racing on foot wonthe twenty+fifth Man Versus Horse Marathon. Huw Lobb, an e)perienced runner from London, made history

by beating the fastest horse in the race. He told reporters that it was most important not to chase the horses,

but to be fast while running at a steady speed.

*ince Lobbs great success, other determined runners ha e beaten the horses too. 3 er the last eight years

horses ha e won si) times and humans ha e won twice. The last time a human won was in 5$$7 with a lead

of ele en minutes and the e ent is becoming more and more popular e ery year. Howe er, it was %ordon

%reens interest in mans achie ement that first brought the worlds attention to the small town of LlanwrtydWells.
