How it works
• Adult attempts to read four books during the summer.• Each time you read a book or listen to an audio book and fill out a book review online, you earn
a prize. Before writing your review, please read the review writing guidelines on the back of this paper. You can log your review online at: usmc.evanced.info/iwakuni/sr/homepage.asp
• Children’s books, newspapers, magazines, and other similar materials do not qualify for this program.
Books
• Only books read between June 17—August 4 count for the program.• Movies do not count for the program, but audio books do count.
Prizes
• Adults may only earn one of each prize and one chance for the Grand Prize.• To earn a chance at the Grand Prize, all 4 book reviews must be completed and checked by the
library staff, by August 4th **Please note that prizes are only available while supplies last.**
Please follow these guidelines when writing your review: Don’t give away the story! A book review is an evaluation of a work, not a book report. Begin with a short summary or background of the work, but do not give too much away. Many reviews limit themselves only to the first couple of chapters or lead the reader up to the rising action of the work. Reviewers of nonfiction texts will provide the basic idea of the book’s argument without too much detail. The final portion of your review will detail your opinion of the work. Your Evaluation:Choose one or a few points to discuss about the book. What worked well for you? How does this work compare with others by the same author or other books in the same genre? What major themes, motifs, or terms does the book introduce, and how effective are they? Did the book appeal to you on an emotional or logical level? Please also include here who you would recommend the book to.
These guidelines borrowed from Owl at Purdue University. For more information visit: owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/704/01/
