Welcome to the 2016 edition of Read Write Inc. Phonics

Dear teachers,

I’m really excited to tell you about our brand new 2016 edition of Read Write Inc. Phonics. It’s a delight to bring together the knowledge and experience we’ve gained from working in 4,000 schools over 10 years.

At Ruth Miskin Training, we never stand still. We are always looking for ways to improve our practice so all your children learn to read and write, quickly and enjoyably. And, although Read Write Inc. Phonics already meets the high expectations of the new National Curriculum, we’ve raised the bar even higher and included the grammar children are expected to know.

We’ve also developed our two-day training so that your teachers can make the most of these wonderful new resources.

Best wishes,

Ruth Miskin

A comprehensive literacy programme for children between the ages of 4 and 9 learning to read. Our trainers know how to get every child in your school reading. Our core purpose is to give you the skills and confidence to do this too.

Read Write Inc. Phonics works because we:

z Make learning to read focused and fun; we put as much joy into teaching the sound ‘r’ as we do into reading a story by Roald Dahl

z Use picture mnemonics to teach all Reception children to read and write 30 sounds in two months

z Give children storybooks matched to the sounds they know so they develop accuracy, speed and confidence

z Use our unique ‘three reads’ approach to ensure that children love the story and can read it proudly with fluency and expression at home

z Provide the tools for your children to become confident writers: by the end of Year 1 children can write at length using exciting vocabulary and good spelling

z Pick up struggling readers and writers straight away with one-to-one tutoring – an effective use of pupil premium and pupil deprivation grant funding.

Why are the two days of training essential?

z We demonstrate the reading, writing and spelling process step-by-step

z We ensure that speaking and listening is at the heart of teaching

z We examine footage of real lessons

z We help you practise and prepare before you teach

z We demonstrate consistent management strategies that speed up progress and ensure participation.

In-school TrainingTwo one-day trainings for headteachers and up to 45 members of staff. We recommend that the two days of training take place 4-6 weeks apart.

Regional TrainingTwo-day training at a regional venue for primary headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants and SEN staff. Ideal for newly-appointed staff in trained schools and for schools with a small staff group.

Development DaysOur trainers visit you during a normal school day to support the management team, staff and children. New schools find that one Development Day per term helps get them off to a secure start. Existing schools benefit from at least one Development Day per year. We also provide more intensive support for schools requiring improvement.

Online School PortalWe created the Ruth Miskin School Portal specifically for Read Write Inc. schools. It allows you to access documents and resources for our different programmes, book Regional Trainings filtered to match your postcode, and view your training history. Unique to the School Portal is a complete set of Read Write Inc. Phonics films to match every activity. Subscription is included in the price of a Development Day.

“Training is excellent – enthusiastically delivered with a good balance of interaction, modelling, key skills and knowledge.”

“This is a progressive, fun and fast-paced programme. The teaching ensures children learn seamlessly as vocabulary, method and behaviour management are taught consistently. The resources engage children using colourful and vocabulary-rich books. Support is continuous, and children teach each other. Children enjoy it and are sometimes dismayed after completing the programme!”

“The parents of our Reception children attended a workshop where one commented: ‘You are Jedi teachers.’

“Read Write Inc. is a highly effective whole-school approach. It is inspiring for pupils if taught with fidelity and with the true Read Write Inc. energy, magic and buzz!”
