LOVE OF READING

1. Develop and re-introduce the reading award scheme for independent reading (embed it as a consistent part of our school reward system).

2. Organise and hold a reading week to inspire reading with a visit from an author.

3. Every class to have a class novel/story read to them at 3.15 every day.

4. Purchase new books for the Library (based on audit of gaps in genre/gender/topic).

5. Refurbish the library so it is engaging for all pupils (& being used voluntarily at various points in the day).

6. New librarians from Y6 appointed. 7. Further develop links with Leyland Library (& encourage

increased use by the children). 8. Ensure books are accessible and celebrated throughout

the school in every class, in displays and in the library. 9. Every class to have a library/book corner of high quality

books of a variety of genres. 10. Volunteers come into school & listen to individual readers

(TAs to train them in how to do this).

Library Refurbishment

• Reading reward scheme is up and running (and children are being motivated to read more and read a greater variety of books).

• Reading week with a visiting author has been held and it has inspired the children to explore books more.

• Every child can talk about the novel/stories they have been reading in class.

• New books have been purchased for the library. • The library has been refurbished and is now an attractive and

vibrant place to visit and children choose to visit the library regularly.

• Links have been developed with Leyland Library so children are visiting the library regularly (questionnaire results).

• Books are seen throughout school. • Every class has a book corner/class library of good quality books of a

variety of genres. • Reading/book displays are seen in every class and throughout the

school (including non-fiction books). • For children to have favourite books/authors/characters.

COMPREHENSION SKILLS 1. Develop specific comprehension skills (identify expected

progress of comprehension skills for each year group) – retrieval of information; identifying key words and related words; inference; main points & themes; evidence form text; character feelings & motivation; personal opinion/responses; author use of language.

2. Audit resources to develop comprehension skills (& purchase any necessary materials).

3. Ensure all comprehension materials are being used (get out at staff meeting).

4. Training for staff in developing comprehension skills 5. Use comprehension skills across the curriculum (e.g.

Science; learning journey topics; RE). 6. Use the class novel as a way to engage children’s

understanding (especially author use of language).
