The reading section of TOEFL measures your ability to understand the English language by answering certain questions from a given passage.

The number of passages in a single test varies from 3-4 in numbers. Each passage is approximately 600 to 700 words long and is followed by a set of comprehension questions.

In all, the TOEFL reading test requires you to answer 36 to 70 questions. The total time allotted for this section is 60 to 100 minutes.

STRATEGIES BEFORE the Test

Read on a variety of topics to build your English vocabulary.

Practice trying to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from how they are used in context.

Become familiar with all the types of the questions and how to answer them.

STRATEGIES DURING the Test

Read the first two or three sentences of the first paragraph, and the first sentence of each paragraph after that. Notice key words and phrases that are repeated through out the passage.

When a question asks about specific information, scan the passage to find this information via key words and phrases.

In questions about vocabulary, look for context clues in the passage.

Work as quickly as you can.

Do not leave any questions unanswered.

If you cannot find the correct answer, then try omitting the answers which you think are incorrect.
