Get on Track for Year 1

READING • WEEK 6Back on TrackBetween Reception and Year 1

2 © Blake eLearningBACK ON TRACK • WEEK 6

Welcome to Week 6Welcome to Week 6 of your Back On Track literacy programme! This programme is for students between Reception and Year 1. It reinforces the learning

from Reception and provides the essential skills your child needs to transition successfully

into Year 1.

Over 10 weeks, your child will have the opportunity to engage in fun-filled, online learning

activities, based on the Fast Phonics programme. Fast Phonics uses the proven power

of systematic synthetic phonics instruction to boost reading skills. It focuses on phonemic

awareness and phonics practise.

Each week you’ll receive a 20-page booklet. Inside you will find a set of carefully selected

activity sheets that will allow your child to revisit, consolidate and build crucial reading and

literacy skills. We’ve packed lots in so your child can get excited for Year 1!

We recommend you follow these simple steps to get the most out of the 10-week

programme.

1 Print the pupil pages for the week. Ensure your child has pencils and erasers to complete

the worksheets.

2 Start by setting your child up on Fast Phonics. Activities begin at Peak 13 and allow your

child to progress at their own pace.

3 Encourage your child to read the recommended books from the Reading Eggspress

library.

4 Once each day’s work is complete, fill in the incentive chart. There is also a certificate at

the end of the week to celebrate your child’s achievement.

5 Enjoy the learning. Keep it light.

We know your child will enjoy learning with Fast Phonics because it makes

learning to read fun!

2 Max, Pat and Dad are off to the coast for a week. Dad tells Max and Pat not to fight in the car. “If you do, I will turn back and we will NOT go to the coast!”

3 It is a long trip and Pat feels a bit carsick. “Are we there yet?” she wails. At long last, Dad parks the car. Max and Pat lend a hand to unpack some bags. They cannot wait to feel the cool sand and have a swim.

4 Max can smell fish and chips in the air. It is such a good smell! Pat hears a gull and sees it swoop. It can smell chips too, and pecks at a box left on a bench.

5 Dad has got a good spot on the sand and sets up the sun shelter. He tells Max and Pat to rub on some sunblock and put on hats. “You too, Dad,” Pat tells him. But Dad is looking for his towel. He cannot wait to have a little sleep on the sand.

6 Max digs and fills his bucket. Pat is a champ and kicks a lump of wood along the sand. “GOAL!” she yells. “I have such skill!” She tells Max to join her and they run and jump in the soft sand.

7 Max sees a cliff that is off to the right. “We can go there!” he yells. The track is steep, and they feel the wind drop. It is hot near the rocks. They hear the flap of wings as gulls swoop up and down in the air.

8 Max and Pat look in the rock pools. They can see starfish and a snail. Little fish dart under the green weeds. Pat picks up a pink shell and Max looks for a good rock to skim.

9 They see a mast and spot a fishing boat on the rocks. Pat has a better look, just as a little crab pops up. It sees some flesh to pinch. “Ow!” yells Pat in pain, as the little crab zips back under a rock.

10 Back on the sand, Dad is still on his towel. It is so hot. He is glad Max and Pat put on lots of sunblock. Dad sits up and sees them running along the sand. They look like they have had fun.

11 Max and Pat stop running as soon as they see Dad. Pat lets out a moan. “Oh Dad!” He looks down at his arms. His skin is bright red and sunburnt. “Ow!” yells Dad. “Ow!”

12 “Oh dear,” sighs Max. “Did you forget to put on sunblock?” Dad nods and feels bad. It was such a foolish thing to do and will put a stop to his fun. Just his luck!

13 A week is up and Max, Pat and Dad must go back in the car. Max and Pat have had so much fun. Poor Dad had to sit under the shelter for a week, but now he feels good. His sunburn is much better now. Dad is sure he will NOT forget the sunblock on his next trip to the coast!
