Be Perfect Wow, that’s a tall order! But what does perfect mean? The Greek word
means “full” or “complete.” In the first reading, Leviticus calls us to
be holy, a word with cultic allusions—to be set apart to be used for
God. Though not possessing exactly the same sense, there is a
connection between perfect and holy, for to be set apart to be used for
God will certainly make us perfect, fulfilled, and complete. So what
does Jesus mean when he tells us to be perfect, as God is perfect?
Continuing our reflection on the Sermon on the Mount, we find Jesus
telling us how we are to be perfect as God is perfect. He offers two
examples of extraordinary behavior. The Mesopotamian code of
Hammurabi states “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” The
punishment may not exceed the crime. This was a step forward in
ancient justice.
Jesus said that this is not enough. There is to be no vindictiveness, no revenge, regardless of how
equivalent it might appear. The reason for this is that God loves and cares for all, even those who do us
injustice. God makes the “sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the
unjust” (Matthew 5:46). In this way, we must be like God; we must love all, no exceptions. This is what
it means to be perfect. It is indeed a tall order. But it is the way to be fulfilled, to be complete.
Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA

A Word from Pope Francis One of the essential characteristics of this vocation to perfection is the love of our ene-
mies, which protects us from the temptation to seek revenge and from the spiral of endless
retaliation....Those who evangelize must therefore be first and foremost practitioners of
forgiveness, specialists in reconciliation, experts in mercy. — Homily in the Central African Republic, November 29, 2015

Stations of the Cross will be celebrated every
Friday during Lent at 7:00pm. All are welcome.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In the middle of winter, the Season of Lent is once
again upon us. This is the holiest time of the year for
Catholics. Lent, of course officially begins on Ash
Wednesday. Most of us are familiar with the traditional
practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Those are
important in relation to repentance, renewal and
mercy. Everything we do should remind us that lent is a
penitential season.
Lent is more than a time to give up something. It is also
a time to add something, to take action in our faith in
ways that make it more meaningful and real…acts of
service and mercy are changes we can make in our
lives. And also, I encourage you to take time to reflect
about your faith, for this, we are going to have some
talks about the meaning of the Season of Lent.
These talks are scheduled for March 5, 12 & 26 at 7pm
in the church.
Perhaps you may also consider celebrating God’s
forgiveness by receiving the sacrament of reconciliation
at one of our scheduled times, or to take part in a
communal celebration of the sacrament that will be
take place on Thursday, April the 2nd.. God bless and
guide you in this journey of Lent and make you ready to
celebrate Easter,
Fr Ciro A. Perez

Development and Peace
This year, Development and Peace’s Share Lent
Campaign is encouraging us to support all those in the
Amazon and the Global South who are caring for God’s
creation. The theme of this year’s campaign is, “For
Our Common Home.” In keeping with this seasonal
spirit of Lent, Development and Peace calls us to
reaffirm our commitment For Our Common Home. In
response to Pope Francis’ concern for the Amazon and
its peoples, we are invited to heed the cry of the poor
and the cry of the Earth. Later in this Lent you will be
asked to contribute to the work of Development and
Peace in the Amazon and the Global South. The Share
Lent Calendar in your bulletin will help you prepare
and follow the journey of this year’s Share Lent
campaign. For more information, please go to

*Christian fasting obtains its full meaning when we
deprive ourselves of food in order to be more open to
prayer, to share more in the suffering of those who are
starving, and to save money to give to the poor. Fasting
is a penitential discipline intended to open our hearts to
God and others, a means of purification and spiritual
liberation, a witness to the depth of our faith.
**The law of “abstinence from meat” binds those who
are 14 and older; the law of “fasting” binds those from
18 to 59 years of age. In fact, all Fridays are days of
abstinence from meat, but Catholics my substitute
special acts of charity or piety on this day. Parents have
a duty to introduce children gradually to the
understanding and practice of penance.
