ENGLISH TRANSLATION My Hometown #6: Shirakawa City, Fukushima

My hometown is Shirakawa City in Fukushima prefecture. Nowadays, the name “Fukushima” is known worldwide for the nuclear accident, but today I’d like to write about the Fukushima I call home.

I lived in Shirakawa City from birth until high-school graduation. With big shops and stores lining the streets today, the city has changed quite a bit since then, but, even today, in the summer you can still see lush green rice fields stretching out in all directions.

Small but significant, Komine-jō is the city’s castle. The castle’s stone wall collapsed in the big earthquake in 2011; when I went home last year, the castle was closed for repairs. To the south lie the aptly named Lake Nanko (literally, “south lake”) and its surrounding park—the oldest park in Japan! Sakura (cherry blossom) trees encircle the lake, making my favorite sakura scenery.

A little outside of town is Shirakawa-no-Seki (“the barrier of Shirakawa”), a place made famous in a haiku poem by Matsuo Bashō. Nearby is a delicious ramen shop I frequented one summer. Their specialty is a bowl of thick, curly noodles with a chewy texture.

Shirakawa also has its own festival: the Chōchin (“Japanese lantern”) Festival, celebrated in

September every other year. Starting out from the Shinto shrine, for three days a mikoshi portable shrine is carried through the city streets, and then is returned to the shrine. Living abroad today, I can’t go see the festival often, but when I was a kid, I used to help pull the mikoshi.

Shirakawa’s festival is an important tradition. The city comes together as one—shouts of encouragement from fellow festival-goers urge us on, and, in the shadow of the big earthquake and its aftermath, give us strength to recover and renew.

Speaking of earthquakes, I’m sure you know that eastern Japan suffered major damage from the 2011 earthquake. The aftermath is evident in everyday life—for example, radiation detectors have been placed in public parks. Parents worry about letting their kids play outdoors, so indoor play areas have been set up in order to keep kids active.

Here, halfway around the world from my hometown, I wait anxiously for the day when those worries are vanquished, when once again the natural beauty and abundance of Fukushima’s countryside can be enjoyed freely and fully.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION Oops! #2: Jumbled Japanese in Vietnam

In addition to my lessons at Nihongo-Pro, I teach Japanese here in Vietnam. I tell my students, “It’s OK to make mistakes—let’s talk in Japanese.” Talk they do, with an all-out effort to use the new words they’ve learned. Naturally, they stumble at first, but learning from those mistakes—repeated as they may be—is the essence of gaining language skill.

Below are five real conversations between my students and me, along with a mistake (underlined) in each one. What do you think they were trying to say?

1. “Sensei, mōtorokoshi-wa suki desu ka?”

2. “Sensei, kono hito-wa watashi-no ikoto desu.”

3. “Ngân-sensei-wa totemo kirai desu ne.”

4. “Sensei, watashi-wa oshōgatsu-ni sankai-mo otearai-ni ikimashita.”

5. “Sensei, kono hito-wa watashi-no otoko desu.”

Answers

1. mōtorokoshi (?) tōmorokoshi (“corn”)

In English you say “corn”; in Vietnamese it’s simply “ngô”. However, Japanese uses this particularly hard-to-remember name for the vegetable. What impressed me is the “correctness” of the error. Both words have the same phonetic structure, making it an almost predictable mistake.

Just remembering this conversation brings a smile to my face. Tōmorokoshi is a word with magic power to make me feel great.

2. ikoto (?) itoko (“cousin”)

The student tried hard to remember the word he learned, but it came out as “ikoto”. It’s another smile-provoking mistake.

3. kirai (“dislike”) kirei (“pretty”)

This student surely meant to say, “Ngân-sensei-wa totemo kirei desu ne.” (“Ngân-sensei is very pretty.”) He was all smiles, so I figured out right away he meant “kirei”. It’s an example of how facial expressions and body language can make up for a mistaken word.

4. otearai (“bathroom”) otera (“Buddhist temple”)

I couldn’t figure this one out (“I went to the bathroom three (!) times during New Year’s” ??). I thought maybe the student had an upset stomach from overeating at New Year’s meals. We both laughed when I got the correct meaning: “I visited temples three times during New Year’s.”

5. otoko (“man”) itoko (“cousin”)

“Sensei, this is my man.” Huh? This student’s boyfriend? I thought this student was with someone else... I was a little flustered. Ah, it should have been “itoko”, meaning “Sensei, this is my cousin.” Phew!

Vietnamese has six different tones. Even if two words are spelled the same, if their intonation differs, their meanings are completely different. Communicating in Vietnamese, I make these kinds of errors every day. Just the other day, I meant to say “má” (“mother”), but it came out as “mã” (“horse”)...

But if you’re afraid to make mistakes, you wind up saying nothing.

The more mistakes the better, I say. Along the way, let’s learn lots of language!
