HOW TOUSE A TORQUE WRENCH

Always:• Always use a torque wrench to apply a specific torque value. Never use it as the primary

means of tightening or loosening fasteners.

• Always clean dirty or rusted threads before tightening.

• Always carry a torque wrench with care. A single fall can knock the accuracy off by as much as 30 percent. If you do drop it, get it recalibrated.

• Always store a torque wrench in it’s protective case when not in use.

• Always apply torque in a slow, methodical manner. Avoid sudden, jerking movements.

• Always grasp a torque wrench in the centre of the handle. If two hands are needed, place one hand on top of the other.

• Always return a torque wrench to the ‘zero’ setting before storage.

• Always use the correct drive of torque wrench to suit the size of the fastening you need to turn.

Never:• Never use a torque wrench as a breaker bar. This will damage the torque mechanism.

• Never exceed the recommended working range of a torque wrench.

TRADE STUDENTS IN NEW ZEALAND READY TO GO

When Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) wanted an optimised workflow for their students, cost effective production and training outcome, and a safe work environment with little to no congestion, they chose to implement the Ready, Steady, Go system.

Wintec, a trade training facility in Hamilton, New Zealand, providing education to about 1,000 students annually, approached Teng Tools with ideas for a new workshop setup where the primary goal was to optimise the students’ workflows. After searching globally for a system that would work for them, they decided on the Teng Tools Ready, Steady, Go system, and since they were already using Teng Tools, this was an opportunity to further the cooperation.

PLANNING, SORTING AND SAVING TIME

One of the challenges in the existing student work area was multiple students using the same cabinets and tools being placed back differently each time. Objects were lost and unnecessary time was spent searching for them, not to mention the huge costs for replacing the ones that went missing. Items also got spread out and dislocated since there was no natural collection point close to the work zone. Also, rarely used but essential tools took up desirable workspace due to the lack of a good unit to store them in. There were even some safety issues, with people reaching into drawers or cabinets and getting cut on loose tools.

To plan for the Ready, Steady, Go system, Wintec and Teng Tools got together to analyse the existing work environment, the projects and what tools were required in specific areas. With this exercise completed, Wintec would be able to cut down on congestion, save time, be more efficient and provide a better work environment. When the

processes and needs were all mapped out, the second step was to sort through the entire inventory and get rid of unnecessary items. The third and final step was to plan the new workshop area according to the Ready, Steady, Go zones.

A CLEAN SLATE FOR THREE NEW ZONES

The design plans and installation included three key areas:

The Ready zone is where Wintec placed tools that the students can lean on but that are rarely used.

The Steady zone, located close to the Go zone to avoid wasting time moving back and forth, they placed the ranges of tools that the students use every day. Students have a clear overview and a logical system for these tools.

The Go zone is where the students perform the actual work. Here there is sufficient work surface space for the mobile tool solutions. They also have access to tools, liquids, and other necessities.

Wintec wanted a clean slate for the installation of the new system and started by dismantling the existing work area. From tear down to completed installation and test drive, the new Ready, Steady, Go system was up and running in just three days.

The benefits of the new system where Wintec and their students now know that they have the right setup at the right place at the right time – every time – were obvious from the get-go: increased work efficiency, a more secure workplace with a natural workflow, a higher production frequency and a cost effective execution. Matt Williams, operations manager at Wintec, says that they are really happy with the Ready, Steady, Go system and highly recommend it to others.□

DETERMINED TO WINA punctured lung, a broken elbow and a dislocated shoulder. Any ordinary patient suffering from just one of these injuries would be completely incapacitated, focusing on nothing but the pain and the recovery process.

Not Jason Doyle.

As he lay there in a Polish hospital bed suffering from all three after crashing in his opening ride at the Torun Grand Prix there was only one thing on his mind. His home round in Melbourne, Australia and the 2016 Speedway World Championship.

With that, he turned to his shocked pit crew and told them to prepare his bikes for the flight. The world title dream was still alive.

But it was not to be.

The seriousness of his injuries meant that he was unable to fly. It had been a courageous effort. The Swindon Robins skipper had led the series into Torun after claiming three successive Grand Prix victories but was slammed into the protective barrier when British rider Chris Harris lost control of his bike and crashed in heat three.

American Greg Hancock took over at the top of the standings after Doyle’s crash but the Australian still could have unseated him in Melbourne.

“I made a good start. I went up the back straight thinking I could go into the turn and a really good position”.

“The next thing I could see was Bomber (Chris Harris) letting go of his bike and pretty much from then on it was like a rocket going into the fence”.

“Laying on that track in Torun I did not know what was broken. I didn’t know how badly injured I was until I got to hospital and my life actually flashed before my eyes when they were sticking the tube in me”.

Fortunately, Jason made a full recovery and is back on the track.

Triumphantly returning to Torun only a few months after that fateful day, he secured second place in the world pairs championship after the first round with three race wins and three second places. He’s now determined to win the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship.

Perseverance, unrelenting motivation and sheer determination coupled with an abundance of natural talent mean that one day, he will.□

Adjustable Wrenches

1000 volt tools must always be used for electrical work. A Teng Tools tested and approved insulated tool can protect a user against voltages of up to 1000 volts. They conform or exceed all specifications that the relevant authorities have established.

The screwdriver shaft is covered with two layers of insulation in different colours that make it easy to see if the insulation has been damaged. The blades are insulated before the handle is moulded, which makes the screwdrivers safer.

TOOLS FOR SUPERCARS

For most people, the best is good enough. For a few, only the very best will do. When working with some of the world’s most prestigious car brands, it goes without saying that all equipment and tools used in production must be of the highest quality throughout.

Farsund Aluminium Casting (FAC) have an impressive customer base. For example, how about getting to work for Jaguar, Bentley, Ferrari, BMW, Audi, Rolls Royce, Mercedes and Porsche on a daily basis?

We use the tools we deem are the best.

The tools are solid and durable, and that is important to us.

- We deliver suspensions for all these cars. That is our speciality. The suspension is cast around a core of sand, which means that we manufacture parts that are hollow, casting aluminium around the core, says Einar Johansen, area manager at FAC’s casting workshop, who has the overall responsibility for all maintenance of the moulds in the workshop.

Tools for supercarsWith demanding customers, great tools are also required. It is therefore natural for FAC to use Teng Tools.- Previously, we have used several different types of tools. A few years ago we started using Teng Tools to a greater extent, and today we have eight tool cabinets for our 24 employees. Teng Tools provide good storage and tools at reasonable prices.

Johansen says that the brands they work for have no formal requirements as to which tools are used, but that FAC themselves use the tools they deem the best.- And there are also a few special tools that we have modified to gain access in tight spaces, but Teng Tools’ product range is very wide - they have most of what you may need. And the tools are solid and durable, and that is important to us.

The design protected ratchet (24583ROC) is not only lighter and just as strong but is also much more comfortable to use than regular ratchets. Bi-material handles for a more comfortable grip.
