READY TO CHANGETHE WORLD

READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD Can anything good come out of city slum? This is a question that many would ask but there is no definite answer. Life in the slum is what no ordinary person would ever desire but different life circumstances make it an option to adapt, just imagine living in a shanty, eating unhealthy diets, dressing just to cover and never to impress, lack of quality education just to name but a few is all that slum dwelling can offer but beyond all odds and ends is a one notable personality that has endured most of all the least provisions to rise up and set an organization that is out to change such a negative trend. This is none other than Erick Omondi.Born and raised in the largest slum in East and Central Africa, Kibera, Erick nails from a family of 8 siblings whose lifestyle took a different turn altogether following the death of their father, shattering their dreams of a better future. The entire responsibility of upbringing was left into their only breadwinner who was their mother. Despite her effort to put the family togeth-er, she could not provide for all their needs satisfaction and so Erick opted for street living as a substitute to his now desperate life for survival.“I was living a life of horror and fear and these circum-stances eventually forced me to flee from the slums and join my friends in the streets,” explains Erick. “It is at this point that the harsh reality of life hit me hard. Life as a street boy is like living in the jungle. Survival is for the fittest and hustling for food and a place to keep you head at night.” Life was difficult. But I had big, big dreams. After being in the street for quite some time, Erick was rescued and rehabilited at Maximum Miracle Children’s Centre overseen by Bishop Pius Muiru and Rev Lucy where he lived for seven years and got his education, This brought a turnaround in the life of Erick and his passion to help the disadvantaged children grew up to the now well established CBO known as Generation Guiders. The main Objective of Generation Guiders is to help the orphaned and disadvantaged children gain access to quality education. As an active organization, various beneficiaries can attest to the generous input and effort made towards their lives with regards to their education.Beside Education support programme, Generation Guiders has other parallel programme that make if of a diversified culture of approach precisely, Hope for life

program and Tulia Girls program. These programs are established for charity purposes and depend on period-ic donation from well-wishers and generous contribu-tion. The organization has partnership with Zana Africa to distribute free sanitary pads to needy girls, currently 400 girls benefit from this partnership from different schools.“I expected Generation Guiders will grow fast into this big organization. The reality is that humanitarian work is not easy. You work with people who to some degree have lost hope in their life” The success of Generation Guiders is much attributed to the tireless effort and periodic input by its Advisory Board members, Staffs and the mentorship that Erick can say was from his close teacher and associate, Harold Nyavanga. The continued support is what makes Genera-tion Guiders what it is today. Erick hope to leave a legacy that will inspire others to aim high "I want to be a role model for those who feel discouraged and give them hope…" says Erick.”They should keep on going; the sky is the limit."“I urge all the young people out there to go forward and gather a little courage to face the insurmountable mountains of problems before them and grab any opportunities to make their dreams come true,” adds Erick This is a humble appeal to all to extend their effort and support a child for this is the only way in which we as a country can eradicate poverty and make Kenya a fully developed state.
