    Shunt ReactorsShunt reactors are used for various

    areas of application:

    Compensation of capacitivereactance of transmission cables, in

    particular in networks with light or

    no load.

    R eduction of system-frequency

    overvoltages when a sudden load

    drop or no load occurs.

    Im provement of the stability and

    efficiency of energy transmission.

    Two type of shunt reactors are

    manufactured:

    W ith iron core divided by air gaps

    Without iron core, with magnetic

    return circuit.

    The shunt reactors offer individual

    problem solutions:

    They satisfy all the specified

    requirements regarding voltage,

    rating, type of operation, low-noise

    and low-loss levels, connection

    method and type of cooling, as well

    as transportation and installation.

    Precision Manufactured in All Designs

    Windings, insulation, tank,monitoring devices and con-nection method are the sameas those found in the con-struction of transformers.However shunt reactors havesome special structural fea-tures and master certain pro-blems due to physical factorsdifferently.

    O il-fi lled shunt reactors arenormally made with O N A Ncooling, for high ratings alsowith O N A F cooling.

    M aking low-vibration cores withradially laminated iron packages withparticularly hard air-gap m aterial.

    Coil and core assembly:

    33.3 M var single-phase shunt reactor500 / 3 kV.

    Types of shunt reactors:

    a) S ingle-phase type wi th and wi thoutiron core and with magnetic returncircuit..b) T hree-phase type wi th iron core,wit h and without m agnetic returncircuit.

    Detail of an iron core divided byair gaps:

    Production has to satisfy verystringent standards to meet thespecified tolerances.

    Assembly of the iron corecomponents:

    Insertion of the radially laminatedlimb column.

    O ur Com pany can look backon more than a century of experience in the sector of transformers as the construc-tion of shunt reactors has pro-ved. In the course of the yearswe came up with many con-structive solutions. The ex-amples of applications listedbelow give some idea of thevarious technical implementa-

    tions.

    For the 275 kV network in Kuwait:

    250 M var three-phase shunt reactor,50 Hz frequency, O N A F cooling withcable connection box. For testing, theboxes are turned and bushingsinserted.

    Designed for very low noiseemissions and compactdimensions:

    150 M var shunt reactor, 345 kV.

    In the UHV test bay in Nuremberg(Figure on the left):

    135 M var three-phase shunt reactor,525 kV, being successfully tested andsituated in Canada (Figure below).

    Up to the highest voltages:

    110 M var single-phase shunt reactors,735/ 3 kV for Canada.

    For operation in the Danish high-

    voltage network:60 M var shunt reactor, 420 kV, O NA Ncooling.

    Two 115-tonne consignments

    for overseas:Loading one of the 250 M var three-phase shunt reactors on a ship inRotterdam.
