If you have ever house-hunted or sold a home in the dead of winter, you know that it presents a whole new set of challenges. For buyers, it’s difficult to see the landscaping, patios, decks and foundation under a couple feet of snow. For sellers, the challenge is trying to make your home look as appealing in the dreary winter light as it does on a sunny summer day when nature is on your side.

However, creating curb appeal during the winter months is achievable. While you can’t rely on nature’s resplendence, with the tree branches bare and the rest of the garden in sleep mode, you can create a warm inviting outdoor landscape that will put your home’s best face forward.

Neat and tidy is the way to go. This rings true no matter what the season. Trim trees, vines and bushes, rip out dead annuals from flowerbeds, keep the shovel, garbage cans and recycling bins neatly stored in the garage or shed. Have your children put away bikes, sporting equipment and anything else that may be lying around.

Add a little life. Consider planting some winter flowers. Even in winter, plants such as honeysuckle, snowberry, winter jasmine,

fountain grasses, cabbages and lambs ear can add life and colour to your exterior. Evergreens, holly bushes and yews can also be put in planter pots and stand up well even when the snow flies.Bring your decor outdoors. Your window boxes can be filled with winter greenery such as cedar branches, euonymus, holly and birch bark twigs. Add colourful berries and inexpensive craft-store finds such as grapevine stars, sparkly sticks or ribbons.

Think safety and curb appeal. With a slew of strangers using your front walk during showings and open houses, be sure to replace burnt out exterior light bulbs and ensure all exterior lighting is in working order. Adding additional lighting such as solar lamps, spotlights or rope lighting may help brighten up pathways and cheer up entranceways when the days become shorter. Also be sure to stay on top of the shoveling of your drive and walkway.

A backyard ice rink is not only a favourite Canadian tradition it is also a great way to enjoy the wonderful winter weather with family and friends. Ice rink building traditionally begins on Boxing Day and is a great family project, making you and your kids proud to skate on an ice rink you all helped to create.

Rink Building KitsIf your goal is creating the best rink on the block, you may want to invest in a rink building kit. Sold online and in home improvement or department stores, these kits include complete instructions, rink liners and all the supplies you need. Promising simple set up, they even adapt to uneven grounds. Prices vary depending on design, ranging from $200 to $1,300.

Bare EssentialsMany beautiful ice rinks have been built with only packed snow, a shovel and a hose. Often the more popular option, this allows you to customize the shape of your rink to get the most out of your backyard space.

Get Building 1. Once you have decided on your base, clear the area of debris

to ensure a smooth surface and avoid melting on warmer winter days.

2. Pack the snow that will form the base of your rink tightly. To create a border for your rink edge the outline with a shovel, densely packing the snow.

3. After creating a strong foundation, begin to fill your space with water.

4. Using a fine mist, fill your rink with 1 inch of water per day. (Remember every extra layer of ice you build will mean longer skating into the spring.)

5. Always shovel your rink after each snowfall to keep a smooth surface.

6. Consider hanging Christmas lights in the trees surrounding your rink for nighttime skating.

7. Lace your skates and enjoy your new rink!

When it came time to sell our home my wife and I were feeling some anxiety. We knew we had a beautiful home with many upgrades but as it was a smaller home we were concerned it would possibly not sell quickly or for a fair price.

After interviewing agents we decided that Domenic Manchisi would be the agent to sell our home. Domenic put us at ease, he was confident and professional without being pushy and we felt he appreciated our home.

Domenic placed the “For Sale” sign on our lawn Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday night we had an offer for our home and with Domenic’s guidance and advice our house was sold that night.

My wife and I would highly recommend Domenic Manchisi to anyone wanting to sell their home we were very impressed with Domenic throughout the entire process of selling our home.

MILTON – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that will help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money.

This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that a full three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and – worse – financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”.

It’s amazing the impact that windows have on your home’s energy conservation. According to National Resources Canada, windows and doors account for 25 percent of total home heat loss. It is also important to note that new windows are consistently ranked by home improvement experts as one of the top 10 improvements you can make to your home to increase its value.

When your windows are old and worn down, your energy costs go up. So how can you tell if it’s time to replace your windows? Read on for some tips that will help you spot the signs of deteriorating windows.

The first step is to check for drafts. Do this by holding a candle in front of the window ledge. A flickering candle means that a draft is coming through.

Take a close look at the condition of the frame by pushing the end of a flat-blade screwdriver into the wood. If the wood is soft and the screwdriver is easily pushed in, you may need to do a full window replacement, including replacing the frames.

If the paint is peeling on the exterior of your house this can also be a sign of worn out windows. Paint peels when moisture travelling through improperly sealed windows makes its way to the exterior

Correctly installed, energy-efficient windows make a home more comfortable by reducing drafts and condensation and increasing the temperature of the interior side of the window. So what should you be looking for? Today’s energy-efficient windows are argon filled, have double or triple glazing, low emissivity (low-E) glass and insulated frames and sashes.

Windows should always be installed by a professional. Many stores offer free installation with your purchase, so be sure to do your research first, watch for sales and ask about energy-efficient features.

Is It Time forNew Windows?
