PulsePoint - A Lifesaving Smartphone App - Launches
On Wednesday, February 15, the Chesapeake Fire Department and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center announced the launch of PulsePoint, a lifesaving smartphone app that can increase the
likelihood of a person surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. The app notifies CPR-trained citizens who are nearby of the cardiac arrest so that they may respond and begin CPR in the critical moments before medics arrive. The app also provides locations for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) which can be used to provide lifesaving shocks to cardiac patients, when appropriate. PulsePoint is available on Apple and Android Devices.
The Dominion Boulevard Project, including the new Veterans Bridge, has been honored with 3 major awards from the American Public Works Association, Mid-Atlantic Chapter. MBP, the firm that oversaw construction of the project in conjunction with City staff, was named Consultant of the Year. The
Contractor of the Year award went to Dominion Boulevard Constructors, a consortium of 4 firms that teamed to build the massive project. And finally, Dominion Boulevard won the Project of the Year for Transportation projects over $75 million, and will now compete for the National award. The project, the largest in the City’s history, opened to traffic in late 2016, with tolling beginning on February 9 of this year. Toll collections utilize an “Open Road” system of all electronic collection based on the E-ZPass transponders and a pay-by-plate camera system on a gantry above the roadway, north of the Veterans Bridge.

PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS
Attending the Kickoff press conference were (l-r): Fire Chief Ed Elliott, Sarah Kehr and Dr. Shon Chakabarti from CRMC, Dr. Lewis Siegel, and Fire Division Chief Thom Schwalenberg
On Thursday, February 23, a bright, sunny day beckoned guests to Tidewater Community College’s (TCC) outdoor solar laboratory for a celebration and conversation about renewable energies. TCC and Dominion Virginia
Power representatives gathered with community members to talk about their commitment to solar power education and community college’s role in preparing the workforce.
TCC is one of seven community colleges in Virginia providing technical training and know-how for students pursuing work in the emerging solar, wind and geothermal industries.
Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Virginia Power, has invested in solar training education by providing a grant of $150,000 to Virginia’s Community Colleges to advance program offerings.
TCC has been a front runner in renewable energies training, establishing one of the first Career Studies Certificates in Renewable Energies Technology. In addition, the college offers the Solar Ready Vets program, which prepares transitioning sailors for work in the solar industry.

The Chesapeake Mosquito Control Commission will begin aerial larvicide operations during the first week of March, to decrease the population of immature mosquito larvae. Operations will take place from approximately 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., for a period of up to seven days. If weather is not favorable, the
mission will be rescheduled and completed when conditions permit.
Kritter Aviation, an experienced contractor, will be conducting the treatment. A liquid mixture of B.t.i. (a natural bacterial spore), and Altosid (an insect growth regulator) will be applied to larval habitats in select areas to prevent the emergence of adult mosquitoes. These insecticides target mosquito larvae, do not affect bees, butterflies or dragonflies, and pose no risk to humans, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A granular formulation of the same Altosid insect growth regulator will be applied to larval habitats in other areas of the city. Habitats treated include woodland pools, floodwater pools, swamps, and marshes. The treatment will have no effect on backyard container-breeding species.

Chesapeake Green was presented with the Green Travel Chapter of the Year award for 2016 to recognize efforts for protecting the environment and promoting green tourism
in Virginia. Chesapeake is proud to be a participant in the Virginia Green Certification, a statewide initiative that strives to reduce the environmental impacts of Virginia’s tourism industry. Dozens of hotels, restaurants, attractions and events in the city participating in the program have implemented environmentally responsible practices that include energy and water conservation, and glass, plastic and paper product recycling. The award was presented at the Virginia Green Travel Conference and Travel Star Awards Celebration in Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 17 at the Darden School of Business Conference Center at the University of Virginia. First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe stated at the Awards Luncheon, “The Governor and I want to congratulate these incredible Virginia Green businesses that are working every day to protect our natural resources and promote green tourism opportunities in Virginia. These environmentally conscious destinations are part of what makes Virginia such an appealing place to visit for people from all over the country and the world.” The Virginia Green program is run through a partnership between the Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association, and the Virginia Green Travel Alliance. The program encourages green practices in Virginia’s tourism industry, and it has nearly 1,700 partner organizations that have self-certified their green commitments while continuously improving their environmental programs.
Allyson Kelly with the Chesapeake Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department’s Office of Special Programs accepted the award on behalf of Chesapeake Green.
