The Oska Pulse is:• No Wires and Electrodes• Drug-Free Pain Relief• Painless• Made in the USA• FDA Class 1 ApprovedDr. Joseph Shurman (Chairman of Pain Management at Scripps Memorial Hospital) began by using Oska on a variety of patients to see what type of relief they might experience. “Surprisingly, the majority of these patients got relief. I have found it to be beneficial for the hand, elbows, knees and backs. Hip and shoulders are other areas it’s successful with.” Dr. Shurman indicated that at least 70% of his patients who used the product got relief. He adds, “I don’t know of any other product of its kind that has this kind of literature behind it, more than I’ve ever seen for an alternative form of therapy.”Oska Pulse can be used by the whole family and assists in speeding up recovery from training and games, as well as from minor to serious injuries.

Prominent athletes have had spectacular results. Rod Dixon’s highlights include taking a bronze medal at the Munich Olympics and winning the 1983 New York City Marathon. Oska is something you can add to your routine and it complements anything you do. I find that my hip, lower back and my knees all require support from Oska. I’ve noticed an improvement in my recovery time and a noticeable lessening of pain, absolutely!”

“I have used for several years a similar product to great effect with my sports injuries. This new Oska Pulse supercedes the other product, is so much easier to use, significantly cheaper and with the new technology will I am sure be even more effective. Very pleased” Michael Bentley

They are the two words than no woman ever wants to hear.

It is just as devastating for any man to be in a doctor’s room when a patient is told the test results have detected breast cancer.

Unfortunately, more males are those being diagnosed. The disease has become an issue for

guys.But then it always was.

While it is true the affliction hits more woman than men, the fight against breast cancer has

always been one that involves both genders. It takes the support and care from everyone around the

sufferer to beat the demon. This week the WAFL will recognise that breast

cancer hurts everyone by highlighting attempts to find better treatments and, some day, a cure. It will take everyone’s input to make a result happen.

Just as the disease doesn’t discriminate, the WAFL Real Men Wear Pink round is designed to show how all the football pubic, indeed the wider community, is touched by the problems of the curse.

Claremont midfielder Tom Ledger has watched relatives battle breast cancer and is

well aware of the reverberations it causes through the family.

Ledger was among the spirited Tigers unit that kicked started the Pink Round last year. This season all four matches on the weekend will

carry the special message.“It is a disease that effects

everyone,” said Ledger, who has been a strong advocate for

Claremont’s Pink Round activities.“At a footy club everyone will be touched by it

somehow whether it is your mum, aunty, sister or partner.

“And we need to work on providing support. It is our fight as well. For men, this is such an important issue, too.” As part of the special round, all home teams will wear pink socks. There will also be “Get Pinked” marquees at each ground with face painting, hair spray, temporary tattoos and merchandise. More than 17,500 women are diagnosed with

breast cancer each year. More than 3000 succumb annually. Another 66,000 are living with the effects of a diagnosis. It can also hit men with one in 715 developing breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation hopes to raise $1.5 million to aid research for a cure. Ledger said he took a great deal of information from last year’s Pink Round and recent family events. He believed it was important to view the WAFL events this weekend as a two-pronged approach. “It seems to be something of a silent killer,” he said. “And it effects more women than we think. I believe the statistics show that one in three women are touched by it. “So it is great that we are highlighting an event that is going to effect a lot of men in their lives but we also hope we can generate some more funds to specifically help the West Australian women fighting breast cancer now.” To help aid research and support, donate at the breast cancer fund raiser page – www.realmenwearpink.org.au. By funding world-class research, NBCF is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

It’s been an interesting week for WAFL collectors who have kept an eye on the various sales and online groups. First, a cracking and never-before-seen Claremont item hit the market, and was unsurprisingly sold in an instant. It was a 1981 premiership cushion that would have had any Tigers supporter pretty excited. Before it came up for sale, I was not aware of the existence of this cushion, despite having seen two sets of WAFL cushions from around the same era. I wonder if premiership cushions were made for other clubs in the same era? The other really interesting discovery came when the owner of some 1960s badges came up with some more information about them. The badges have featured in this column over the past couple of weeks and I said I suspected the maker was the now-defunct Daily News, which ran an annual WAFL promotional giveaway to kick off each season from at least 1960-1967. But I had never been able to work out exactly when these badges were made, even though I had scanned through the Daily News looking for them. Well, it turns out they weren’t made by the Daily News at all. They were actually made by a company called Maxart, which was based in Melbourne and renowned for making clothing buttons. At some point, Maxart turned to making badges with slogans like “Ban the bomb” and “Up the workers”. They also made WAFL badges, which were sold in WA for 20c apiece. The owner’s father was a WA wholesaler and she still had the wooden badge stand on which they were sold. And she also found it wasn’t the only WAFL item her father used to sell. Among his unsold stock, she found a couple of bottle openers in WAFL club pouches – these ones featuring South Fremantle and Perth. They’re a bit “folk art” in style and I’m not sure how professional the production process

was, but they would find a good home in the collection of any Bulldogs or Demons fan. Other than the cushion, which sold for an undisclosed sum, most of this week’s sales have been of Football Budgets. Quite a few single Budgets from the 1960s and early 1970s sold for $10 to $15 apiece at auction, while a near-set of 1975 Budgets (23 of the 27 made that season) sold for $140. And three 1990s grand final Budgets sold for between $13 and $15 each. Meanwhile, an East Perth mug attracted some strong bidding and sold for $56 at auction, while an I Love Claremont badge and a 1984 badge featuring Claremont’s Noel Morton sold for an undisclosed sum. On the private market, a large number of 1907 Sniders & Abrahams WAFL cigarette cards sold for between $10 and $90 apiece, depending on condition. Finally for this week, I have a question that I’m hoping will find its way to some postcard collectors; why do the 1934 WAFL postcards never turn up for sale, but the 1933 cards do? The 1933 and 1934 sets were likely made by the same maker, but that maker didn’t see fit to print their name on the cards. Over the years, I have seen about 40 of the 1933 cards. But I’ve only ever seen three of the 1934 cards (two for West Perth and one for Perth). I would love to know why this might be. And I would love to know if there’s a postcard researcher out there with some idea who made the two sets? Speaking of postcards, I’m still looking for a postcard from early last century that features a Subiaco Oval scene and was part of a set of

postcards that carried the words “Greetings from Subiaco”. I have only ever seen poor-quality photocopies of this cards and it would be great to get a high resolution scan, if anyone can help?

CLAReMont v eAst PeRtH

ClaremontRecent history: Claremont needed a break after facing the three top teams in successive weeks. And while they didn’t play last week, the size of East Perth’s loss lifted the Tigers to sixth.the question mark: Has Claremont enough time to sneak into the top five? The Tigers are two wins out of the finals spots with five matches to play.Keep the binoculars on: Captain Jake Murphy played in the reserves two week ago in a bid to be fit in time for the business end of season. He might be back for this critical contest.

East PerthRecent history: The trip to Busselton didn’t have the desired result for East Perth. The Bulldogs reminded the Royals of the work they need to do be finals material.the question mark: Can Jon Giles stop Mitch Andrews from dominating the stoppages? East Perth needs to get on top in the ruck to negate one of Claremont’s strengths.Keep the binoculars on: East Perth has missed co-captain and defensive specialist Kyle Anderson since he hurt his shoulder in the State match. His return has been greatly welcomed.

the battle: The finals have come early for these teams. The winner stays in the hunt for a place in the September action while the loser might as well start planning for 2018. Only half a percentage point separates Claremont (fifth) from the six-placed East Perth. Each is still in reach of the top five. The Tigers might have dropped the past three matches but they were impressive in each and take a degree of confidence they can challenge anyone – even a Royals line-up that will still boast several AFL-listed players.

eAst FReMAntLe v sUBIACo

East FremantleRecent history: The Sharks got off the bottom of the WAFL premiership ladder for the first time this season – and didn’t even play a game to achieve the feat.the question mark: Can the confidence from a last start win over Perth carryover across the bye to a contest against a team with one of the hottest winning streaks in recent seasons?Keep the binoculars on: He is still putting meat on his 197cm frame but in his two outings for East Fremantle Michael Cronan has registered 63 hit-outs.

SubiacoRecent history: Leederville Oval, Esperance, Mandurah. It doesn’t matter for Subiaco. The red-hot flag favourite can win anywhere – and has this season. the question mark: Do the Lions have to drop a game before the finals? Nobody at Subiaco will admit to such but it is strange how a loss can be a good fillip for a rampaging team.Keep the binoculars on: Aaron Heal might be listed as a defender but his solid ball use has made him an attacking weapon for coach Jarrad Schofield in 2017.

sWAn DIstRICts v PeeL

Swan DistrictsRecent history: Many at the club are still coming to terms Greg Harding won’t be at the helm next season. Some of the current black-and-whites players owe Harding a great deal.the question mark: What is the impact of Harding’s call on a team still not guaranteed of playing in the finals? The team should be determined to plan a solid send-off.Keep the binoculars on: Tallan Ames is back after a minor ailment and if anyone is to inspire Swans to their best form against a strong Peel line-up then it is the veteran defender.

PeelRecent history: Got a reminder last round of what is required to be a winner of consecutive flags. Yet there was still a lot of talent on the Thunder team sheet.the question mark: How many players will Peel lose to Fremantle? The Dockers will make changes so coach Cam Shepherd might as well start with a clean team whiteboard this week.Keep the binoculars on: No one can believe Aaron Naughton has only played two league games. The Rockingham JFC product has settled into the Peel team very quickly.

the battle: Strangely, because of the lopsided WAFL fixtures these teams haven’t met since Round 9. And the Peel line-up that triumphed has changed considerably. Sean Darcy and Griffin Logue, for instance, have moved on to AFL level. They were the keys to the Thunder win back in early May. Swans had just 242 touches of the football in their most recent appearance – against South Fremantle in round 17. They need more of the play if they are to trouble the Thunder.

the battle: Not too many pundits will have the gumption to pick East Fremantle against the league leaders. But the Sharks have recent form stopping the Lions in their tracks. It was East Fremantle that snapped another Subiaco 11-match winning streak in round eight last year. On that day Jesse Crichton, Liam Anthony, Sean Henson, George Hampson and Matthew Watson combined to produce the Sharks’ best win that year. The same five players were important to the triumph over Perth last week. So, in spite of their dominance, the Lions will have to be wary at Moss St.

soUtH FReMAntLe v West PeRtH

the battle: The South Fremantle engine room had been a little slow in hitting top gear. Until last round. And that is a big worry for West Perth as it makes the trip to the port. Although the return wasn’t as clean as hoped, the Bulldogs had 11 scoring shots in the opening term against East Perth seven days earlier. By the first siren, Shane Hockey, Steven Edwards and Blaine Johnson had taken control of the contest. So while the West Perth midfield, including Aaron Black, Shane Nelson, Trent Manzone and Jay van Berlo, has the experience to match the Bulldogs, the Falcons need them combine if they are to cement their spot in fifth.

South FremantleRecent history: South Fremantle has just about done enough to secure hosting rights for the Qualifying Final while not quite having enough matches left to take top spot from Subiaco.the question mark: How bad is Ashton Hams’ leg injury and will it be another rest for the hard-working on-baller? South needs a fit Hams in the finals.Keep the binoculars on: Former Fremantle rookie Tom Vanderleur has had to bide his time in the reserves this season. But he got his chance to impress against East Perth last week.

West PerthRecent history: The win over Perth last round steadied the West Perth ship. The Falcons are fifth but have East Perth and Claremont still challenging for the finals berth.the question mark: Did Shane Nelson get to keep the match ball last week? He might as well have received the honour because after 51 touches against Perth it was his anyway.Keep the binoculars on: The Falcons have required Ben King to be a strong defensive shadow in recent weeks and the club is getting a solid response from the Gingin recruit.

Western Australia has named its strongest New Holland State Country team in the past decade to take on a South Australian side at Fremantle Community Bank Oval at 5pm this Saturday, July 29. The game will be played following the WAFL League match between South Fremantle and West Perth and broadcast live via Footy Radio and the West Australian Country Football League Facebook page. WA Coach Craig Walker is confident that the squad has the potential to turn the tables on its South Australian counterparts and arrest a winning streak which has seen the Croweaters unbeaten in State country matches against WA since 2011. “Selecting the squad this year has been the most difficult in my time as coach and trying to settle on a final 22 will be even more difficult which is a great problem to have given the calibre of players that are jumping at the bit to represent the state,” he said. The WA squad includes some elite performers, with the majority of players all

starring at the recent Landmark Country Football Championships. Several will also make their State country debut in a side that will be captained by former Subiaco player Scott Worthington, with Cervantes’ Lewis Harvey his vice-captain. Former AFL listed players Greg Broughton (Fremantle, Gold Coast), Josh Bootsma (Carlton) and Brett Peake (Fremantle, St Kilda) will add welcome experience, whilst the midfield will feature former WAFL players Stephen Payne, Lewis Harvey, Mitch Boyle, Joel Leeson and Andrew Haydon. Jurien Bay trio Simon Moore, Rhys Waters and Jayden Magro, who were part of the successful Central Midlands Coastal side at the recent Landmark Championships, are also in terrific form. Waroona stalwart Courtney Lakay, who will return to State Country football for the first time since 2012, has also been included after winning the Landmark Medal for his performance for Peel in the Division 1 Landmark Grand Final. Two certain starters in former WAFL league players Brad Holmes and Brendan Jones have been forced to withdraw due to injury.

» Former East Fremantle forward Brett Peake is set to line up for WA.

Football program opens doors for multicultural studentsNorth Lake Senior campus students Michael Hlungupi (Zimbabwe), John Kuch (South Sudan), Jonathan Gakona (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Patrick Jerome (DRC), James Moses (South Sudan) and Mohammad Ali (Afghanistan) arrived in Australian less than two years ago and knew nothing about Australian Football. This all changed when the boys took park in a six-week Welcome to AFL Multicultural Program, run by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) at their school. Six months after the program concluded the boys were donning the Fremantle CBC Amateur Football Club Colts jumper and to this day, they are completely owning it. Patrick Jerome, who arrived in Australia only last year, quickly grew a love for the sport during the program and was over the moon when he, along with the other five boys, were selected to play for Fremantle CBC AFC. “When I found out that we were going to join CBC I can definitely say that it was something I was waiting for and I was very excited about,” he said. “I thought it will be a good time to improve my skills.” It is a fantastic outcome for the program which introduces students from diverse backgrounds to the basic skills of football and it provides an

opportunity for those who want to progress, to transition into community club football. WAFC Community Engagement Manager Paul Mugambwa said it is a great result for the program which has been delivered to more than 60 schools in WA. “Our school programs are generally where kids have their first engagement with footy which is why it is so important we target schools with a high number of multicultural students to give them a taste of the sport,” he said. “Our community engagement team works very closely with the school and the program participants to help them make the transition from school football to their local junior football club as seamless as possible.” Fremantle CBC Amateur FC Colts Coach David Johns said the boys have truly embraced the club community. Check out the short video on their football journey at www.wafootball.com.au.

Simmonds success is umpire history

Leading goalkicker AWARD

Gabby Simmonds has created history, becoming the first female field umpire to officiate a West Australian Football League Reserves match. Recruited from the East Fremantle Junior District, Simmonds joined the WAFL umpiring panel in 2013 and has enjoyed her most successful season after overcoming serious injury setbacks over the past two years. Simmonds said she is thrilled to make the step up to Reserves after starting this year in Colts and umpiring a handful of AFL Women’s games. “Reserves is definitely a bit quicker, but it’s really exciting to be out there,” she said. “I had a great team to umpire with on my debut.” Simmonds began umpiring at the age of 13, after she asked her family to take her to her first junior umpiring training session. She left an immediate impression on the coaches and was appointed to umpire her first game, an Under-9s match, that weekend. “I knew pretty quickly this was a good way to be involved in the game, given that I couldn’t play,” she said. Simmonds continued to umpire juniors matches for the next six years before being added to the Development Squad and getting the chance to officiate several WA Amateur Football League games. An opportunity arrived in mid-2014 for Simmonds to train with the WAFL umpires and she successfully trialled to join the field umpiring panel the following year. Unfortunately for Simmonds, she missed the entire 2015 season due to injury but she never gave up hope of running out for her first Colts match.

“There’s a great group of guys down there and they were all very encouraging and got around me, so I was motivated to get my chance at WAFL eventually,” she said. Simmonds umpired the first AFL Women’s exhibition game between Fremantle and West Coast last season before rewarded with her first Colts appointment soon after. While her 2016 season was also hampered by some hamstring problems, she remained determined to work her way back to full fitness and push for higher honours, which came earlier this month when she umpired the Round 17 Reserves match between Subiaco and Claremont at Leederville Oval.

Eight of Western Australia’s brightest football talents are in line for All Australian honours following the conclusion of the NAB AFL Women’s Under-18 Championships. Fielding the youngest team over the championships, the Mundella WA 18s claimed two wins from five games played over two rounds. WA’s wins came against New South Wales/ACT and Victoria Metro. Quick, agile midfielder Courtney Hodder won the MVP award for WA. West Australian Football Commission Talent Manager – Female Programs Clint Degebrodt congratulated the WA squad on their efforts. “We are very happy with the progress of this group and with the WA State Academy Program. We are satisfied that we engaged the best female talent available including a young list that will develop very well over the next few years,” he said. “With WA entering a team in the inaugural AFL Women’s under 16s Carnival in 2018, we are committed to further supporting WA talent and ensuring that we remain a premier producer of top-end female talent into the future.” Sabreena Duffy, McKenie Dorwick, Courtney Hodder, Sonia Dorizzi, Tayla McAuliffe, Emily McGuire, Kate Bartlett and Rosie Deegan were named in the 54-player All Australian squad. The squad of 54 will be split in two and play a curtain-raiser to the NAB AFL Women’s State of Origin match, to be played during the AFL ‘Celebration of Football’ between the end of Round 23 and the first week of the AFL finals.

State pride for WAAFL Integrated playersSixteen players from across the WA Amateur Football League’s Integrated Program have had the chance to represent their State at the AFL National Inclusion Carnival held on the Gold Coast. The week-long carnival which runs from July 24-29 featured for the first time all States and Territories represented with Queensland, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria Country, Victoria Metro, Tasmania and Western Australia fielding teams. The Integrated Football Program run by the WA Amateur Football League (WAAFL) caters for players 16 years and over with intellectual disabilities.

The players representing WA were nominated by their clubs before participating in fortnightly training sessions where the team was finalised. This year’s representatives came from six of the seven teams in the WAAFL Integrated Program with players from Coolbinia West Perth, Kingsway, High Wycombe, Wembley and Fremantle CBC Green and Gold. WAAFL Integrated Football Coordinator Greg Gilbee said that the players are excited about representing Western Australia. “It is recognition of their terrific character, personal values, commitment and application” he said. “The players understand they are representing the clubs who nominated them, the program and the wider community, so selection comes with a great deal of pride and responsibility” said Gilbee. The players are only the second team to represent Western Australia in the AFL National Inclusion Carnival, with the previous team representing WA in 2015.

Mines Rovers have maintained top place on the Goldfields Football League ladder with an thumping 122-point win over bottom-of-the-ladder Kambalda. Best for the winners were Craig Mitchell and Joshua Pennington while Jay Collard (four goals) was also impressive. Cruize Garlett and Joshua Goldsmith tried hard for the Kambalda side which after 12 rounds has failed to win a game. Boulder had a good tussle with rivals Railways eventually running out 26-point winners and remain equal top with Mines Rovers. Alex Devitt, Scott Worthington and Karl Hogan all had good games for Boulder while

Ben Miller and Alek Oliver worked hard for the losing unit. Railways, despite the loss, remain two games clear in third place with Kalgoorlie, who had the bye and is sitting in fourth place with five wins for the season.

Can You Help?Since the WAFL competition began in 1885 there are 11415 known league players to the start of the 2017 season. Of these, 1657 (14.5%) played 75 or more league games and the WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 36 of the +75-game players. For the remainder of the season the Budget will list the playing records of four players on the chance a relative or researcher can provide birth details. The +75-game players include:

andrew Otto GabRielSOn (East Fremantle 1922-1932, 93 games). Born 1900 Fremantle, Died 1986. An outstanding half back with a tough straight through style who played in 3 premiership teams henry enderby JacKSOn (Claremont 1926-1931, 84 games). Born 1906 Died 1946 Bicton. A solid and reliable half back in Claremonts first 6 league seasons. Died in a car accident. Robert emmett (bob) MOlOney (Claremont 1930-1936, 103 games). Born 1908 Died 1997 Bicton. A solid and consistent defender from Northam and older brother of GeorgeGeorge James PReedy (Subiaco 1915-1924, 114 games). Born 1892 Northam Died 1971 Perth. A fast centreline player from North Perth juniors who was later converted into an outstanding full back.

Any information that could help lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e-mail [email protected] or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission
