LESSON 1 .1 OVERVIEW
Youth will be introduced to the purpose of the Fulfill the Dream program
and will begin to commit to journeying together to fulfill their personal
and community dreams. In this lesson, youth will get an overview of the
program, create a classroom agreement, and sign a contract to be held to
their own standard of what being an engaged member of this community
looks like. They will also be introduced to the concept of a “mindset,” and
the names and meanings of the 7 Mindsets.

>> Suggestion
As much as possible, organize the room so that youth sit in a circle. This is helpful as it is
best to get a shared sense of power in the group, and to create space to move around.
>> Example
My name is Roberto Rivera, my nickname is “Big-Bro” and I am passionate about rap
(making a motion as if I am rapping).
Passion that lasts long
DISPLAY QUOTE
Everyone stand in a circle and share their name, nickname, and what their passion
is using a mimed action. You start and then the person next to you will continue.
ACTIVITY
STEP 1: GET THEIR ATTENTION // ACTIVITY 1 // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
OPTION A // LONGER VERSION
If you have the time, we recommend that before the next person
has their turn, they introduce all the people who came before them.
We suggest you go last once everyone has had a turn. One trick that
helps is to say everyone's name, nickname, and passion every time
it comes up in the activity. Youth will be amazed that you know not
only their names, but nicknames when you see them again!
OPTION B // SHORTER
If you have a short time with the youth, have them focus on just what
the person before them shared, and/or they could just share their
individual names and passion with action.

STEP 1: GET THEIR ATTENTION // HOOK // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
Today we are going to begin a journey where we build up that spark of hope so
we have the power to fulfill our personal and community dreams. To do so, we
will need to become a community that helps one another find these sparks of
passion, and fan them into a flame, so we can take the risk of changing the world.
Because who knows that the world needs to be changed?
1. Who has a Dream to do what you love and make a difference in the world?
2. What challenges do young people your age have in fulfilling their dreams?
3. Who has even a spark of hope that you can overcome these challenges and
still fulfill the Dream in your life?
DISCUSSION
Ask the questions posted on the presentation display. We find that asking the
second question in the third person will illicit a more honest response from youth.
Play with this throughout the course and see what you observe.

STEP 1: GET THEIR ATTENTION // INTRO VIDEO // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
Explain that this video is of the founder of the Fulfill the Dream program—a
program that you will learn has not only empowered youth around the nation, but
also transformed the life of a close friend of his.
FACILITATOR NOTE
>> Explain
This is more than a program—it is a movement as Fulfill the Dream has young people
publishing books with their art, poetry, and raps. They create national albums every year,
and have a youth leadership conference every year in Atlanta. If you take this seriously, you
can have an opportunity to meet young people from 90 different countries, who have done
service learning projects that have transformed their schools and communities.
1. Who would be interested in being part of an album?
2. Who would be interested in getting poetry or art published in a book?
3. Who would be interested in creating a video that could be shared with youth
around the world?
4. Who would be interested in possibly going to the Ultimate Life Conference in
Atlanta to meet youth leaders from around the world?
DISCUSSION
>> Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed.

Mindsets Mentions / MMs are not displayed in the presentation player, they are
connections for your reference as facilitator. The goal is to cover these 7 Mindsets,
which will also be provided to you on a poster to hang up, and have the youth do
the work of making the connections to them at the end of every session.
FACILITATOR NOTE
>> Explain (Mindset Connection)
A mindset is simply a way a person thinks. Some mindsets help us live our dreams, while
others can actually slow us down from accomplishing our dreams. Our program has
identified 7 Mindsets of the most successful people throughout history. Every successful
person you can name has in one way or another shown these mindsets.
Does anybody know what a mindset is? What does it mean to you?
DISCUSSION
STEP 1: GET THEIR ATTENTION // 7 MINDSETS // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
Think of our dreams as big houses. What is the most important part of the house?
(Allow students to answer. They may say the roof, the doors, or the windows.) All
of these are important, but the most important part of the house is the foundation.
It doesn't matter how big or small your house is, if the foundation is not strong, the
house will eventually fall. Your dreams are like huge houses, and the 7 Mindsets
are the foundation of that house. In order to build a life where we live our dreams
and change the world, we have to build a strong foundation in our way of thinking.
We are going to briefly go over what the mindsets are, and then we want to find
where we see that mindset shown in the lesson.

This mindset teaches us that we need to Dream Big, Embrace Creativity, and
Expect that we will be successful.
1. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE
This mindset is all about working with, for, and through others in our journey
to accomplishing our dreams. Who do we need to work with, and who are
we working for? What relationships help us achieve our dreams, and what
relationships try to stop us?
3. WE ARE CONNECTED
This mindset teaches us that if we truly want to be happy and successful in our
life, we have to find those things that we are passionate about and really put our
energy into pursuing those things. A lot of time we pick our dreams based on how
much money we will make, but people who have lived their dreams and changed
the world found what they were good at and what they loved to do, and they
thought of different ways they can turn those passions into their career.
2. PASSION FIRST
7 Mindsets
STEP 1: GET THEIR ATTENTION // 7 MINDSETS // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
The fourth mindset is sometimes said to be the most important. The 100%
Accountable Mindset teaches us that, at the end of the day, we have to take full
ownership of every part of our lives. There are things that will happen to us that
are out of our control, but the 100% accountable mindset tells us that we can
always control how we respond if we choose to take ownership of our responses.
This will show you how much control you truly have in achieving your dreams. This
mindset is about overcoming failure, obstacles, and setbacks, and not letting the
situations that life puts us in determine how happy and successful we will be.
4. 100% ACCOUNTABLE
The Live to Give mindset is about understanding in order to receive anything in life
you have to be willing to give first. That includes, money, love, respect, time. But
the greatest gift you can give is to be your authentic self and share your talents
with the world.
6. LIVE TO GIVE
This mindset teaches us to focus on the positive in all things and find ways to be
grateful and to show that gratitude. It also encourages us to see the everyday
resources and supports that might get taken for granted or overlooked.
5. ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
The Time is Now mindset is about taking action in the present. To put it simply,
there is always something we can be doing that can get us closer to our dreams.
We cannot be afraid to take action, accept that we might fail, view that failure as
feedback, and find a way to start again. Often, the reason people don’t take action
is because they are afraid of not being successful, but success lies on the other
side of fear. And we have to be brave, and take action, if we are serious about
changing the world.

On a large flip chart of butcher paper, write out agreements on the top and draw a line down the middle. Underneath agreements, write “weeds,” and on the other side, write “seeds.”
FACILITATOR ACTION
>> Mindset Mention
WAC – Build value and vulnerability in yourself and with others
100% – Own your life and reactions
STEP 2: MAKE THE CONNECTION // DISCUSSION // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
Explain that in order to get real with each other so we can represent our city and
our school, we need to create a space where people can create and share our
dreams without fear of judgement or people hating on us.
FACILITATOR NOTE
1. Let's say that this classroom is a garden— What would be the weeds that
would need to be uprooted? Start out with disrespect, and ask them what all
would be included in disrespectful behavior. Have them continue for a few
more minutes and write up their ideas.
2. Next, under seeds, ask the youth: What do we want to make sure we do to
create the space where we can grow? Start out with encouraging each other,
ask them to add on to that.
3. Reiterate what you have agreed upon as behavior that you want to be
accountable for. Ask them what can we do if people violate this agreement?
Should they be allowed to publish their work? Go to Atlanta? Should they be
allowed toarticipate in the class or special events?

STEP 3: TRANSITION TO LIFE // DISCUSSION // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
>> Mindset Mention
WAC – Build value and vulnerability in yourself and with others
Cover the items in the presentation.
FACILITATOR ACTION
Youth will be teamed up in groups of five during the course of the Fulfill the
Dream program. We call this a transformation team. This team will hold each
other accountable for completing their portfolio questions and activities, will
support each other during the events, and build community around achieving
their dreams.
1. Uncover your authentic dream.
2. Activate your personal and community power to achieve these dreams.
3. Create poems, raps, and pictures that apply the mindsets and ideas of this
program to your life.
4. Conduct interviews with community elders.
5. Host events and do a community transformation project.
6. Create a portfolio documenting your journey, and this is something that you
can eventually use to open up opportunities for college and career.

STEP 3: TRANSITION TO LIFE // SUMMARY // REALITY CHECK 1 .1
>> Collect Cards
Have them hand you the cards before they leave.
To get started, log in to the portfolio questions found in google docs or
blackboard. You can alsoprint out the PDF found attached to this lesson.
Explain that you want them to complete question 1a before you meet again.
ACTIVITY
Once you have all the cards, begin to compile groups between 3-5 youth
depending on how large your class is. Use the information on the cards to place
students in groups without their friends. We find this program to be more powerful
if youth are in groups with youth they don’t know well.
FACILITATOR NOTE
In the beginning, we spoke about 7 Mindsets (review if necessary) and I explained
that some of these mindsets will be seen in every lesson we do. I want you all
to identify the mindset you saw in this lesson. (Listen for any of the mindset
mentions listed here, students might also identify other mindsets they saw. These
answers should be encouraged.) Over the next week, I want you all to look for
times when you show these mindsets in your life. We will discuss these in the next
class.
