Realizing Potential

2011 Annual Report

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDWhat was once just a dream has become reality.

When community leaders came together to plan a new home for the Grand Rapids Public Museum more than 30 years ago, they thought big. The new facility would need to serve as a community gathering place, be able to host exciting traveling exhibits and thoughtfully display core treasures.

At the time, these visionary men and women could only imagine the success that was the reality of our past year at the Public Museum.

In the fall, more than 240,000 people gathered at the Museum to view our 2010 ArtPrize exhibition, making ours the most-visited exhibition center.

November marked the opening of the internationally-acclaimed exhibition BODIES REVEALED. By extending the initial run of the exhibit twice, we welcomed 171,053 visitors, including 40,000 students.

And, the Museum continued to display the treasures of the past to educate and inform, while playing an important role in shaping our community’s future. The 229,573 guests of the Museum during the past year experienced innovative programs and interactive exhibits.

While the Grand Rapids Public Museum has played in integral role in creating life-long learning opportunities in our community for more than 150 years, we now serve as an essential resource to our entire region.

We are proud to share the Public Museum’s 2010 – 2011 success with you, and we thank you for your continued interest and support that made it possible!

Sincerely,

Danny Gaydou, ChairmanGrand Rapids Public Museum Friends Foundation

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

This African proverb speaks to the successes of the past year at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. In our long-term strategic planning, we set out great challenges for our organization, and then looked to our community to help reach our goals.

We reached out to artists from across the world in curating our 2010 ArtPrize exhibit. With 73 artists, we served as the largest exhibition center with 21 states and four countries represented.

This past fiscal year saw many collaborations come to fruition as we opened BODIES REVEALED. The process to bring this exhibit to your Museum started years ago as we reached out to our community for insight, feedback and guidance.

Once the exhibit opened, we welcomed local medical professionals to serve as volunteers within the exhibit, creating a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests. We also hosted a speaker series, spotlighting experts in medical innovation within West Michigan.

In creating and building THANK GOD FOR MICHIGAN! Stories from the Civil War we looked to our region’s historians and educators to help educate our visitors on the important role Grand Rapids played in this historic conflict.

Our relationships within our community are critical to our ability to go far, and offer the very best opportunities to our visitors at the Public Museum.

Thank you for your commitment and support that allows us to serve our community!

Sincerely,

Dale A. Robertson, President & CEOGrand Rapids Public Museum

The Grand Rapids Public Museum is a local cultural

anchor, as well as a regional treasure that draws

new and returning visitors each year.

The Museum serves as a place for inspiration,

education and community gathering that bridges

generations. We stay true to our mission and

enhance the lives of people in our community

through four vital roles:

n As a convener and facilitator, we partner with

and bring institutions and individuals together

in the pursuit of insight and understanding.

n As a collector, we preserve the treasures of the

past and present—to be used for teaching the

lessons of the future.

n As a motivator, we inspire discovery and learning.

n As a resource, we provide life-long learning,

in part, as an extension of our community’s

formal educational systems.

While we dutifully fulfill our core purpose as a

conservator of the past, we are dedicated to helping

shape the future of our community and region.

This past November, Grand Rapids lost a visionary

leader and generous philanthropist in the passing

of Peter C. Cook.

Peter’s remarkable legacy of giving is evident

throughout the city of Grand Rapids, including

right here at the Public Museum. Peter and his

wife, Pat, led a community campaign to acquire

our beautiful antique Spillman Carousel and to

build the glass and stone pavilion over the Grand

that houses the carousel and bears their name.

Peter’s work to provide this cherished gift to our

community exemplifies the true spirit of Grand

Rapids. Donations of both time and treasure have

helped make our city what it is today and we

deeply appreciate all who support our mission at

the Public Museum.

In honor of Peter’s birthday and his legacy of

philanthropic leadership, we offered free carousel

rides to all on May 9. We will continue to do so on

this day every year, in his memory.
