HeritageThe village of MansfieldWoodhouse probablybegan to take shapearound 1100, followingthe clearance of peopleliving in nearbySherwood Forest byWilliam I, also known asWilliam The Conqueror.William wanted theentirety of SherwoodForest to himself and so the people living within it had tomove out!
In 1304 the village and church burnt down, with thechurch being rebuilt shortly afterwards. There wasprobably also a wooden Norman castle or fort between the
Church and the High Streetbut no records now exist, having probably all been lostwhen the village was burnt tothe ground.
Following the rebuilding ofthe village after the fire, itremained populated mainly bya workforce of farmers,
quarrymen and foresters until 1903, when Sherwood Pitwas sunk. Places of interest (see overleaf) constructedbefore 1903 and marked on the map include Manor Houseowned by General Sir John Digby who was Sheriff ofNottingham and famous for the role he played in theEnglish Civil War but in 1903 Manor House became thehome of the Colliery Manager. Church Street retains theair of rural tranquillity, with many fine properties due to itbeing a fashionable place for the gentry to live from theseventeenth to early nineteenth centuries, known as the“West End” due to being upwind of the village’s smells andnoise. The market cross situated at the north of ChurchStreet is now a protected Ancient Monument and wouldoriginally have been the commercial heart of Woodhouse.Only the stump of the cross now remains but originallywooden stocksstood next to thecross. The founderof the Quakers,George Fox, wasimprisoned in thesefor trying to teachthe Gospel to thepeople of MansfieldWoodhouse!
However, from 1903 Woodhouse’s population increasedrapidly but the town’s layout is still based on its originalold medieval village layout, which can be seen along HighStreet and Station Street, with Park Road having been thenorth back lane and Priory and Welbeck Roads the southback lane.
There are many more fascinating insights into Woodhouse’shistory and heritage to be seen around the town centre, but there isn’t the room to list them all here! If you wouldlike to find out more contact Mansfield Tourist Informationor Park Road Resource Centre, from where you can alsofind information on heritage trails.
