■ CT-S280

The CT-S280's USB interface operates only as a virtual serial port (virtual COM). For this reason,

use the following two procedures for the driver installation.

1. Install the virtual COM driver

The dedicated CT-S280 virtual COM driver must be installed on the PC. Follow the installation

guide and install the dedicated CT-S280 virtual COM driver on the PC. The installer and installation

guide can be found on the included CD-ROM or obtained from the website where the Windows

drivers are made publicly available.

2. Install the CT-S280 printer driver

Obtain the Windows driver installer, and install the Windows driver according to the directions in the

installation guide. Select "COM*" when selecting the port during installation. The installation will not

finish and the printer will not work if you select USB.

■ Notes

The settings of the virtual serial port on the printer are a baud rate setting of "115200" and a flow

control setting of "Hardware". Set the communications settings on the PC to the same

settings as the printer. If the communications settings are not the same, errors will occur, such as

the inability to print or printing garbled characters, and the printer will not print correctly.

Refer to the installation guide for how to configure the communications settings of the virtual serial

port.

Always turn ON the power in this order: PC → printer. When multiple USB printers are

connected to a single PC, the USB port numbers may be assigned in the order that the printers

were connected to the PC. You may need to lock down the order for turning ON the printer power

to always set the same USB port number assigned to the virtual COM ports.

If the USB cable is disconnected or the printer power is turned OFF while printing from a virtual

COM port, some time will be required for recovery.

4.1.3 Precautions

When the printer is connected to a PC with Windows 8 or higher, the printer may not be able to

print immediately after the printer installation has finished. To avoid this problem, restart the PC

immediately after printer installation, or use the printer after opening the following dialog box.

Always finish installing the Windows driver before connecting the printer to the PC.

The USB interface may be easily affected by noise, depending on the host and environment. If the

printer frequently goes offline, implement countermeasures for noise, such as using a cable that

is resistant to noise with ferrite cores attached to both ends.

If the installation fails for whatever reason with the USB interface, and the driver also cannot be

uninstalled, the printer may be recognized as an unknown device in Device Manager in Control

Panel. Delete the unknown device in Device Manager.

If the printer is connected to the PC through a USB hub, operation failures may be caused by other

devices connected to the hub. Directly connect the printer to a USB port on the PC without

using a hub.

Page 10: Receipt/Panel Printer Installation Manual · After the printer has been installed, do not switch the printer to a different USB port. The printer may not be able to print effectively

- 10 -

After the printer has been installed, do not switch the printer to a different USB port. The

printer may not be able to print effectively if switched to a different USB port. In this situation, first

uninstall the driver, and then reinstall it.

Windows 7 assumes that the PC will be connected to the Internet when installing a printer

driver. If the PC is not connected to the Internet, the installation will not finish correctly, even

though the installer has finished working. "Thermal Printer" will be displayed for the item in Devices

and Printers, and the triangular warning mark will be displayed. In this situation, finish the

installation with the following procedure.

1. In Devices and Printers, right-click "Thermal Printer" and select "Troubleshoot".

2. On "Install a driver for this device", select "Apply this fix". The wizard will automatically search

for the driver that has been locally installed, and finish the installation.

a. For the ERROR and PE LEDs, 330 Ω of resistance is put on the circuit side to limit current to 10

mA. Use LEDs with forward voltage rated at approximately 2 V when using these terminals. The

control board may be damaged if an LED is used that exceeds 10 mA.

b. Apply the drive voltage for the power supply terminals (pin 7 to 12) and GND (pin 13 to 18) to all

pins in order to ensure capacity.

*Use GND pins 4 to 6 to ground the interface. If not required, we recommend using these pins

together with pins 13 to 18 as a common ground.

c. The serial interface is equipped with a RS-232C driver and receiver. Always use the serial interface

at the RS-232C levels.

d. Pull up the RESET terminal (pin 39) with 3.3 kΩ of resistance. If this terminal will not be used, set it

to normally closed.

e. Either the serial interface or the parallel interface can be used.

*Either interface can be used, but they cannot be used at the same time.

f. The included cable is approximately 300 mm long. Adjust the length of the cable as required.

However, extending the wiring by an excessive amount may cause malfunctions due to noise.

*Take noise into consideration and cut wires that will not be used at the base of the wire.

g. Pin 19 is not used inside the printer. Do not connect pin 19 to the other device.

■ Notes

Incorrect wiring may damage both the printer and the other connected device. Take extra

caution when wiring the printer.

■ CT-S280 / CT-S281

The CT-S280 and CT-S281 do not have RTS and CTS signals, so the printer will not work if the host is

performing RTS/CTS control. Change flow control to Xon/Xoff control or another type of flow control.

Page 17: Receipt/Panel Printer Installation Manual · After the printer has been installed, do not switch the printer to a different USB port. The printer may not be able to print effectively

- 17 -

4.2.3 Precautions

If CITIZEN COM is not used and a normal serial port is used with the driver that includes the status

monitor, it may not be possible to acquire the status of the printer. Always use CITIZEN COM.

Do not use a straight cable; use a crossover cable.

Always set the printer and PC to the same serial communications conditions (baud rate,

data bits, parity bits, etc.). If the settings are different, errors will occur, such as the inability to

print or printing garbled characters, and the printer will not print correctly.

When printing via the serial interface, other applications that communicate using the same serial

port may not operate correctly. In this situation, the problem can be avoided by changing the

printing output destination to a different port in the port settings on the properties dialog box of the

printer driver.

No assurances about performance can be made when the printer is connected through a USB

conversion cable. Always connect the printer directly to the PC with a serial cable.

The serial interface is not suited to printing large amounts of data, such as graphics and

gradations, because of its slow communications speed. Lines may appear in the printed results,

or the paper may not feed correctly. Try changing the following memory switch settings. Refer to "5.

Memory Switch Setup" for how to change memory switches.

1. Increase the communications speed of the serial baud rate.

2. Lower the printing speed level.

If printing does not improve even when those settings are changed, review the print data or

consider switching to an interface with a higher communications speed, such as USB.

the status of the printer. If the CITIZEN TCP/IP Port Monitor is not used and the standard TCP/IP port is

used with the driver that includes the status monitor, it may not be possible to acquire the status of the

printer. Always use the CITIZEN TCP/IP Port Monitor.

Refer to the CITIZEN TCP/IP Port manual for how to install the CITIZEN TCP/IP Port Monitor. The

CITIZEN TCP/IP Port Monitor installer and manual can be found on the included CD-ROM or obtained

from the website where the Windows drivers are made publicly available.

(4) Install the Windows Driver

Install the Windows driver.

Obtain the installer and install the Windows driver according to the directions in the installation guide.

4.3.2 Precautions

We recommend installing the CITIZEN TCP/IP Port Monitor before installing the Windows driver.

When a printer is connected to multiple PCs via a wired or wireless network and one of those PCs

is turned OFF without terminating the network connection, the printer will check if communications

have been interrupted and stop the network connection with that PC, but the printer will stop

communicating with other PCs while it is performing that check (maximum of 180 seconds).
