ticularly in colder regions. Previously

she wrote four books for adults. Creepy

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER SERIES IN DUTCH DAILY NRC

NOW REWRITTEN FOR CHILDREN

Did you know that the ancestors of the mosquito lived before the dinosaurs even stomped around our planet? Or that the woodlouse – a landlubber! – breathes through its gills? And that Spider-Man could learn a thing or two from the slug?

Creepy Crawlies features all sorts of tiny creatures: from the ant that should win a Nobel Prize to the flexible woodlouse and the intrusive tick. In an infectious and compelling manner, Gemma Venhuizen writes about these buzzing, stinging and sucking little bugs – pesky creepy crawlies. Or are they?

P R E S S O N C R E E P Y C R AW L I E S :

‘The book is irresistible thanks to the humorous tone and narrative drawings. […] Venhuizen’s frankness and inventiveness, as well as her smooth turn of phrase, are reminiscent of Midas Dekkers. [...] Van der Pol’s drawings are just like Venhuizen’s writing: narrative, imaginative and cartoonish. The ingenious reversal of reality, with insects like giants and mini-people swarming around them like ants, ties in brilliantly with Venhuizen’s plea to approach insect life from a more ecological perspective.’ – **** NRC HANDELSBLAD

‘Venhuizen describes each creature with palpable pleasure and a fine eye. Hidden in the light-hearted stories are facts that will blow children’s minds.’ – HET PAROOL

There’s a Hole in Wisp’s WorldWRITTEN BY RENOWNED PHILOSOPHER COEN SIMON

WITH EXTRAORDINARY ILLUSTRATIONS BY LINDA DE HAAN

ACCOMPANYING STUDY PACKET AVAILABLE

There is a hole in the world and anyone who falls into it will disappear forever. That is scary, but you can still make jokes about it. And that is what Wisp does. How long does ‘forever’ actually last? And what is so bad about disappearing? Because if nothing ever disappears, the world will stop. Unfortunately, nobody except Mulut understands Wisp’s jokes. But what will happen to her when Wisp himself disappears?

A humorous approach to death and infinity.

Smelly Farts

Smelly Farts by Afran Groenewoud and Tjarko van der Pol is a comicalpicture book with an important message: the world would be a better place if we were all considerate of one another.

A small group and a big group are throwing a party together. But the small group is not having a very good time, because the big group keeps letting out lots of smelly farts. They believe you can’t have fun without smelly farts. But the small group disagrees with that. And the big group disagrees with that... Will they manage to enjoy the party together in the end?

Kevin’s Crocodile

WRITTEN BY GOLDEN SLATE PENCIL WINNER BETTE WESTERA

Kevin has just started school. He’s nervous. Will all those strange children want to play with him? Luckily, he gets help from... a crocodile! The crocodile is not afraid of anything or anyone. And Mum? She is also a bit nervous of the other mothers in the playground. But Kevin knows just what to do about that!

Kevin’s Crocodile is a relatable picture book for all young children who are about to go to school for the first time.

Bette Westera has previously written many books for children of all ages and her work frequently wins awards. She created this book together with Barbara de Wolf, who provided the witty, eye-catching illustrations with fold-out pages.

Everybody picks on Bing. The other children are all mean to him. Wolf is the worst of all. He hangs Bing from a tree by his braces, or throws him into the ditch, so the others shriek with laughter.

Mum and Dad try to comfort Bing. Mummy tells him to take no notice. Dad, on the other hand, tells him to stick up for himself. But none of that helps. Then Bing has a great idea. Will it help? You bet!

Mine’s Blue MiracleFOR FANS OF CROCKETT JOHNSON’S HAROLD AND THE PURPLE

CRAYON

Mine has a vivid imagination and wants to be an inventor. She is an outsider at school and often feels misunderstood. Thanks to a magical disco very she gains the ability to make her own world more beautiful with a blue pencil. She can grow long hair, for example, or wings, so that she can fly. She draws and draws, and slowly but surely the world around her turns blue: the pavement, the school playground, her books, the sky. Until the other children ‘catch’ her imagination and start drawing too…

A book with brilliant illustrations that celebrates the power of imagination and being different. Useful for sparking conversations at home and at school about being different.

MANON SIKKEL

FOR FANS OF DAVID WALLIAMS

Following on the success of Secret Agent Grandma, three-time Dutch Children’s Jury prize-winner Manon Sikkel now presents The Not So Scary Neighbour. A lively book for children aged 6 and older.

You wouldn’t want a scary neighbour like Grover. A man with long greasy hair and a gold front tooth, he spends his days shooting pigeons with his shotgun. But one day, his aim is off. From that moment on, everyone in the street is terrified of him. Except for Roxy and her next-door neighbour, Linde. They have a plan to make Grover ‘normal’, and decide to give him a makeover. But things take an unexpected turn…

‘The sometimes surreal events in the story come thick and fast, so it never becomes dull for young readers. Even though the book is mostly funny, it might also make children think about how people (and they too) are quick to judge based on appearances. PLAYFUL AND ATTRACTIVELY LAID OUT BY ILLUSTRATOR-

DESIGNER MAARTJE KUIPER

The earth is not in great shape. Children often seem to grasp this even better than adults, who hardly ever explain what words such as ‘ sustainability’ and ‘greenhouse effect’ really mean and what is going on with the planet.

For what exactly is the truth about farting cows, gas guzzlers, plastic soup and climate change? Which ingenious green inventions actually work? And what can children do themselves? Green Feet is an optimistic and useful book about sustainability, full of tips to lead a green yet enjoyable life, which turns out not to be so difficult at all.

P R E S S O N G R E E N F E E T:

‘What a rich and comprehensive publication: everybody go green, now!’ – NBD BIBLION

‘We shouldn’t pull our punches when it comes to our planet’s problems: they exist and we shouldn’t try to hide them. And, of course, Lotte Stegeman doesn’t do this: she has managed to explain them in a concise and very understandable way. [...] Even more importantly, I think, she doesn’t stop there, but repeatedly emphasises that many people are already working on reducing our ecological footprint every day. She has chosen some really fun, original and practical ways to do this. [...] And with plenty of humour, this book is fun to read.’ – PLUIZER.BE

Lotte Stegeman is a writer and journal-

ist. For years she was editor of Kidsweek

and 7Days. In 2016 she cycled across

America. During that trip she rode by

melting glaciers and held her nose as

she passed a stinking cow farm. Since

then she has tried to take better care of

the earth.

Mathematics is becoming increasingly important in our high-tech society, but many children find it difficult and boring. To get children excited about mathematics, Stefan Buijsman and Govrien Oldenburger have writ-ten an accessible and exciting adventure about David and Emma, who travel through the Algebrealm together and learn about the use of math-ematics in daily life. In this playful, narrative non- fiction book there are no complicated sums, but extraordinary adventures, insights and jokes, which will help children learn all about graph theory, functions, game theory, cryptography and much more!

Written by young philosopher of mathematics Stefan Buijsman – who obtained his doctorate at the age of twenty – and journalist Govrien Old-enburger who is able to explain complex subjects in a simplified manner.

Children are forever being asked questions. How was your day at school? Have you tidied your room yet? And although they don’t nor-mally enjoy being asked these kinds of questions, you ask them what they wish for, they usually come up with the best answers. Annelies Fontijne thought up countless questions and presented them to chil-dren. The 100 questions that the children liked the most have been brought together in this activity book. All sorts of topics are covered. Brimming with questions that give children the floor and to which only they know the right answer! For instance:

‘What would you like to change most about your parents?’

‘Imagine you have a peeking machine; whose house would you want to look inside?’

‘You’re allowed to stay overnight in one shop. Which shop would you choose?’

‘You can move your house else. Anywhere you like. Where would you put it?’

‘You can spend a year living in the past. Which era would you choose?’

100 questions to which only children know the answer

I’m Vincent and I’m Not Scared

With my hand on my temple, I slowly get up. It’s extremely painful. So painful I can’t talk. Even if I were able to talk, I wouldn’t know what to say. Silently and in shock, I stare at Dilan. Stephan holds out his hand and I grab it.‘Dil?’ asks Stephan. ‘I think you hurt him.’

Dilan turns around and looks at us. ‘Let him go, man,’ he says. ‘You’re not going to touch him, are you? That guy is disgusting.’My head goes completely silent. Disgusting. So that’s what he thinks of me. He

thinks I’m disgusting. Stephan’s mouth falls open and he lets go. I fall back down on the ground. Doubtfully, Stephan looks from me to Dilan and back again. Dilan turns around and walks away.Stephan hesitates for a moment, but soon follows him. He looks back one more time. I can see that he pities me. But Dilan, I now know, is capable of anything. From then on, I go to school every day with a stomach ache.

Vincent loves anything to do with survival. He knows the SAS Survival Handbook by heart and always carries a can of survival gear with him. Sur-vival is his second nature. It has to be, because every day he has to survive at school: Dilan and his friends have it in for him. And school camp has not even begun yet. Vincent fears the worst and prepares for it as well as he can. Then a new girl, The Jacket, joins his class, and that changes ev-erything...

Our house has become too small, says Mum. I know that this is not true. Houses cannot shrink: the doors would get stuck and the windows would crack. The house is exactly the same as before.

Hessel’s parents are moving house, but Hessel has no intention of going with them. Angrily, he runs away. His best friend Berker comes with him. But running away is not that easy: they get hungry and lug a suitcase that is far too heavy for them. Then they meet Piya, an Iraqi girl who lives in a church with her family. Her father is on hunger strike because he wants a residence permit and a house for his family. That gives Hessel an idea.

Drowning

‘Come on, Mum, I can go, can’t I? Lars’ parents will be there and they’ll keep an eye on things. I’m old enough to go on holiday with friends. We won’t do anything stupid.’

‘I don’t know, Emma,’ says Mum. She looks worried. ‘You’re sixteen. And you hear so many crazy stories about youth campsites and binge drinking holidays…’

‘No alcohol, I promise. Not a drop. It’s not allowed there anyway, and you know I don’t even like it. And what could go wrong if my boyfriend’s parents come too?’

Sixteen-year-old Emma wants to go on holiday to Blanes, Spain, with her boyfriend Lars and a group of friends. Ten days of partying in the sun and on the beach! And as far as her friends are concerned, that also includes drinking. Emma loses herself in drinking games, a crush, and nights out on the Spanish Costa Brava. It is sure to be a holiday to remember! But things get horribly out of hand and then a body is found... Who is telling the truth? Who can trust whom?

In Drowning, Marlies Slegers addresses the social issue of alcohol abuse among young people in a penetrating manner.
